Malachi’s prophecies take place after the Jews returned from exile in Babylon, a time when they were supposed to be rebuilding not just their city, but their faith. The temple in Jerusalem had been restored, but the people's hearts remained distant from God. Spiritual decay had set in, the priests were corrupt, and the people's worship had become empty ritual. Despite their return to the Promised Land, they had grown complacent and had neglected their relationship with God.
