Big shout out to Williamina Fleming who was the first to record this in 1888 on a photographic plate taken at the Harvard College Observatory. She was a Scottish astronomer. She started out as a housemaid with no scientific training or qualifications.
The Horsehead Nebula is a region of dense gas and dust where new stars are born. The nebula's distinct shape is sculpted by the intense ultraviolet light from nearby stars, which erodes the nebula's material, creating its iconic silhouette.
the Horsehead Nebula, also known as Barnard 33. This dark nebula is named for its striking resemblance to a horse's head when viewed from Earth. Located approximately 1,500 light-years away, it stands as a sentinel in front of the bright emission nebula IC 434.
Not far from the Horsehead, the Flame Nebula ignites the night with its fiery appearance. This emission nebula is a vast cloud of gas and dust, illuminated from within by the young, hot stars at its core. Situated about 1,400 light-years from Earth, the Flame Nebula is part of the Orion Molecular Cloud Complex, a nursery for new stars. The intense radiation from Alnitak, the easternmost star of Orion's Belt, excites the hydrogen gas in the nebula, causing it to glow with a reddish hue."
Together, the Horsehead and Flame Nebulas offer a glimpse into the dynamic processes of star formation and the sculpting power of stellar winds and radiation. These celestial wonders remind us of the vast and beautiful complexity of our universe.

Nice video Shawn. If anyone is interested in a fantastic astronomical history book, they should check out "The Glass Universe". I only mention it because you talked about Williamina Fleming in this video and she is featured prominently in the book. In fact, it's where I first learned of her.
