Merritt Beason is the most overrated/over-hyped player I've seen in many many years. The main reason why she gets so much attention is because she has the 'look' of an impressive volleyball player -- tall, relatively slender, and most of all, her 'attractiveness'. Yes, she gets that occasional impressive, powerful hit. But that's where it all ends. Nebraska transferred her in for exactly that reason -- their strategy is to boost attendance and fan base by recruiting 'attractive' glamour-girls, and yes, many guys WILL come just because of that. But her performance both in the regular season, and especially in the final tournament was extremely inconsistent, and even quite poor. When she first joined Nebraska, more than half of her 'swings' were soft dinks or roll shots (she couldn't seem to 'get to the ball' or time the ball to take a healthy rip. And when she DID take a hard rip, more often than not, it was STRAIGHT into the block. She's improved somewhat in that department, but still does it way too often. And, the rest of her game is lackluster as well. It seems as though she has this certain STIFFNESS and rigidity in her motions. Look at her service motion especially. It's so stiff and deliberate, not fluid. And look at the first pass in this video at 00:09. Again, there's a stiffness in her motion. She is NOT a natural passer, or ball handler. I think that stiffness is also why she can't learn to be a more dynamic hitter (unable to bend her body/arms/wrists to turn the ball sharply at the last second). She hits and moves so LINEARLY. Also, she doesn't seem to SEE what's in front of her when she's hitting -- the block, the open court, etc. In the final tourney, against Dayton (a team she SHOULD have been able to put up big numbers against), she hit NEGATIVE .042. In the following match against Wisconsin, she hit ZERO %. I don't think I've ever seen such a hyped player and No. 1 draft pick put up numbers that poor so often. I've played, captained, and coached this game for many years, and I've come across players like her. They SEEM like they have so much potential, but there's just something missing, mentally, I suppose, which you can never change, no matter how much you work with them and try to teach them. Like I said, it's a stiffness and rigidity in both body AND mind. Sorry to bash, but I'm really tired of the Nebraska culture of over-valuing and over-hyping players simply because of their LOOKS. They completely DISSED Caroline Jurevicius in favor of their beauty-queen/miss popularity transfer, Beason. And they also DISSED Krause, who completely dedicated herself to the game from day 1, and improved so much over the years, in favor of both Beason and their other 6'5" 'star' transfer, Landfair, who also turned out to be quite mediocre and NOT an all-around player. Not to mention Mendelson. And wouldn't you know it, both Jurevicius and Mendelson became key players in Penn State's championship run, and in defeating Nebraska TWICE, for good measure. I'm guessing Atlanta Vibe wanted her for the same reason Nebraska did -- because of her 'look', to drive-up ticket sales and viewership.
