Right after Kent State I quit college...soon I got my letter from Uncle Sam. Went to Nam...by God's grace made it home. Never got back in the world. Thanks guys for this important song that still speaks volumes.
Neil was in Buffalo Springfield and CSNY before he recorded his massive solo career. He wrote over 1000 songs. I saw him at the auditorium theater with CSN in 1970. And he just announced a huge concert tour!
I had the awesome privilege to be able to sing "Ohio" with a band whose drummer was the cousin of one of the murdered girls. When I got on stage, the lead singer said to me,"now, we sing this in 3 part harmony you know". I smiled and told him" that's cool, cuz I sing it in 4 part harmony like NEIL wrote it". We did it, the people loved it, and I'll never forget it.
These songs connect so well with the experience of the people of Feguson MO. How can you run when you know? Find the cost of freedom...buried in the ground.
+John McCauslin The Ferguson movement is total bullshit! The DOJ...Obamas SS, investigated the incident and concluded the was no criminal behavior on the part of Officer Wilson! Michael Brown was an asshole, and he got an assholes death! May he, Michael Brown ROT IN HELL where he belongs!
Thank you, thank you for posting this. I bought this album when it first came out and wore it out. I didn't think I would ever hear it again. This album/tape/cd is no longer available and it's one of my favorite Neil Young collections. What I'm about to say will not be popular, start opening your eyes people because your freedoms are going away and what Nixon did is nothing compared to what's going on now....your Constitution is being shredded.
This chills me to my SOUL every time I hear it. I had hoped and prayed that the pain, the anger, the hate that I felt on May 4, 1970 would go away; that the things National Guard soldiers and our "government" did to their own, unarmed children, would never happen again. But as I live and grow older I see that the people responsible are still here, others have taken their place, and they are meaner than ever. IT IS TIME FOR REVOLUTION. Evil MUST be forever ousted from our government & country.
@@jeremybittinger2901 & Texas...Comment was spot on!!!! I'm sad to say , WE NEED THE REVOLUTION NOW MORE THAN EVER!!!! America is being torn down and if we don't fight back soon , we may never get it back!!!
I am English, so I was not traumatized by the war in Vietnam. I have to add that I have always liked the song Ohio and particularly this version of the song Ohio. It is also wo worthy of note that this song does not go away.
If I remember correctly, I think I cried the 1st time hearing this combo of songs. Of course, I had heard them separately, and they had the same meaning regardless. But putting them together was a whole different thing for me, whoa!
This was the Hallmark of many of us leading into the 70s. Question Authority was what I was taught..and then THIS?!! "What would you do when you see her lying on the ground.." Thank God for these guys..Love you Man!
These 2 songs running into each other. Omg gives me chills every time. My uncle went to kent back then and dropped out but every year for 3 years straight after what happened, my dad went to kent state just in case if riots broke out because he wanted to be part of them. He said kent was a wild place back then, kids would party till 3am and they'd take the party to the streets and the cops would shoot kids with rubber bullets as a type of crowd control. the kids up there were rowdy but not to the point where they needed to freaking turn guns on them!! It's something that has always haunted me... never forget.
"Find the cost of Freedom" was written by Stills originally for the film "Easy Rider", not for a collaboration with Young, although this recording is a testament to the fact that it was put to good use...
I graduated Kent State and worked for the university in Audio-Visual Services. One night in the Kent Student Union (I'll say Spring 1974) they showed this film "Journey Through The Past", from which this is the soundtrack. It was a five minute walk to Taylor Hall/Prentice Hall where May 4th took place. This Find The Cost Of Freedom and Ohio were part of the CSNY recordings at the Fillmore East in June 1970. The album 4 Way Street was also recorded at that time.
Bought this album back in 1977 and never understood the true meaning of “Ohio” until the segue of the these two songs. The dream sound of the first transitions in too the stark reality of the guitars of “ohio”.
Regardless... Their both sniveling cowards and traitors to those of us who actually served. Privileged Punks. No doubt Democrats....those of the elite that endorsed slavery while my brothers shed blood to free . Check your history ....
Mr. Hampton, that 90's public education is showing, furthermore Neil Young was a Canadian citizen, as for Stephen Stills, he had been a military brat, but I didn't find any military service. As for your wild speculation about political party connections to slavery, either you should stop taking drugs, or start. As for my history, other than a few drunken nights in the 70's, I have a full recall of the past, back to the end of Ike(there may have been more than a few nights in the 70s).
How much blood...how many years? This was an anthem when I was in High School 40yrs ago. How and when do we put paid to this bill?? Really, when does it stop??? Does it have an end? If anyone cares...email me.
Both of these songs sound to me like they were taken from the album 4 Way Street which also are on Journey which came out a few years after 4 Way which could of caused some confusion
Nope, not from 4-Way Street. These cuts are bad imitations compared to that work. Plus I had the album and there would have been a notation denoting that for Copy-write purposes. Best guess another sample taken from one of their many shows. Listen to this version and then the 4-way street version and form your own conclusion.
my uncle threw his rifle down !!!!!!!!!!1and was put into stockade for 4 years strange thing happend in his celll and he was given a honorable discharge!
Four dead in Ohio. 58,220 killed in Vietnam. To Every Veteran Who Fought In A Combat Zone In Vietnam: THANK YOU for your dedication, your sacrifice, your bravery. You truly understand "the cost of freedom." REPLY
As a post-Vietnam veteran, I second that, and also thank the people who tried to bring as many of their brothers and friends home from that war without making the ultimate sacrifice, people like the students at Kent State and many other places around the country.
Journey Through The Past features music derived mainly from four sources: television broadcasts with Buffalo Springfield; live recordings with Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young; Young - electric guitar, vocal; Stills - electric guitar, vocal; Crosby - electric guitar, vocal; Nash - vocal; Calvin Samuels - bass;Johnny Barbata - drums
These two songs together is one of the most moving pieces of music ever. Pure emotion.
no doubt a memoial day anthem

A very long time indeed.

Stephen Stills wrote "Find the Cost of Freedom" not Neil Young.
What I Left But The people of CSNY performed it, and it were first published on a single 7" 45rpm in need of a spindle and stylus.
This is from Neil Young's soundtrack album.
