Lol...thanks for the plug. I am always happy to hear that something I did on my channel helped others. The fiber wheel has been a real star. Outstanding work, I had no idea they made brass andirons. In central Florida we have sulfur water wells, brass lasts a matter of days before it turns green. Great stuff. Cheers
Well, I never would have guessed you would grab the andirons! But, what an awesome find! That old banker's chair is cool! I have similar one and restored it a few years back, sit in it all the time. The fiber wheel is a game changer, learned about it from your channel, but thanks to Joe as well.
Those came out beautifully! Your attic chair is a beauty, too. You cracked me up when you talked about Marines and brass. Lots of Marines in my family. I was always getting my collar adjusted. Lol.
I do love that old wooden office chair. It reminds me of the 200 year old rocker I got as payment that I restored for my son's birth. I'm interested in the rifles that were standing next to it as well. I used to be an amature collector of rifles years ago, only have a few left...
I can't believe the prices they get for those fireplace irons and they really turned out beautiful. I wouldn't thought to use the fiber wheel on brass, we used them for years where I worked polishing SS Great show John thank you
Fabulous job and good eye on those andirons, ScoutCrafter. I'm lovin' that old wooden chair. Please restore; please restore! That Ka-Bar is quite stout. A reliable companion. Great show, thank you.
I just knew you couldn’t pass those up, and I’m so happy you didn’t. They really turned out beautifully. It’s just so hard to imagine them being tossed into the landfill. Great job, as always. Your videos/channel are one of few that keep me coming back to RUclips and away from regular TV. Such genuine entertainment from a person I can really relate to. Thank you for all of your efforts. Hope you have a great weekend.
After moving house recently, and getting rid of so much stuff, I marvel at the amount of things you have,,, 😂.. It would be impossible to "rationalise" your invaluable possessions,, 😂,, Also,, it breaks my heart, as a fully paid up member of the patina boys, to admit I completely enjoyed you cleaning all the gunk off the brass,,🤣🤣👍
Hi John, I thought you would get the irons. I remember the repair you did on your sister’s fireplace. I figured it would be her Christmas surprise. I have to tell you that a month ago I bought the exact same antique wooden chair for the desk I’m setting up my ham equipment. It’s in pieces in my garage as I need to do some visual tough-up. I was told it came out of a courthouse somewhere in Virginia. Very nice cleanup on the irons. The filter looks like it collected your fiber wheel. I have an amazing knife. My birthday is Sept 11. This knife if supposedly a commando knife. I’ll eventually make a shadow box for it. I’ll send you some pics via e-mail tomorrow. Best Regards, John
Funny, I just found a pair at Restore two weeks ago for $30. Solid brass Cannon Ball style. I used Bar Keeper's Friend foam spray and it took off most of the tarnish. Did not need to use a fiber wheel, I used a buffing wheel to put a mirror finish followed by paste wax. Made in New York, USA.
Nice video...and no pliers 🤭 🤣 😇 that fiber wheel is on my list...i got some old brass panic bars from a school demo should look cool on the shop door...And doing that chair will be awesome especially seeing your techniques...you can do the sled too 😃 great video 🖖
Another great video ScoutCrafter! 👍🏻 Those andirons turned out amazingly well just being polished with the fiber wheel and some brasso. Speaking of andirons I always thought that’s what the fireplace tools were called (poker, tongs, ash shovel, etc). I am anxiously awaiting the restoration of Mrs. Ziegler’s desk chair! Have a great weekend, sir.
Good call on the fire place irons, never realized they were solid brass, I thought they were knock offs, also didn’t realize the value. Great knife, enjoyed watching, thanks.
You got me on that pick, I knew you will not take the washer or scale because it was too heavy for you to carry back home , I taught it was going to be the chair to be honest lol
Those fireplace end irons came out great! I didn't know that they were so expensive. You had so many nice items. In my area, they mostly throw out particle board furniture.
I would also have taken home the brass andirons. I forgot the term "andiron" so happy to be reminded. They cleaned up to look almost like new. Very well done. What a lot of dust they created from the fibre wheel. Amazing they did not have dings. I wonder if someone is blocking up a fireplace. I had no idea the andirons go for such crazy prices. Wow. Dave.
Hello mate, just found your channel via tool addict, I thought I had a lot of videos to go through of his now I've got yours as well !!!! Might take me some time, lol. Really enjoyed what I've seen so far ! I'm a tool collector, restorer and general scavenger, so what you do is right up my ally ! Keep up the good work !!
Hey now - up in the attic. Watch out for the low beam, BANG. Looks like you got a bit of an injury. Ouch. I like that wood office chair. I'd bet that some scotch brite and Simple Green would clean that finish up nicely then some Bees Wax and Orange Oil applied with 0000 steel wool. Bob"s your uncle. A fine resto on those andirons. I was totally thinking use in the shop and would not have guessed their value. Wow. Love that beefy Ka-Bar. Enjoyed the show. Cheers.
I had absolutely no Idea what you had taken. Our town had its spring bulk trash pick up about a month ago. Always boggles my mind how much stuff we throw out. Drives me crazy to see good older furniture at the curb when you know that whatever new stuff they replaced it with won’t last half as long.
Hah, that's quite funny, I guessed the scales, but thought if not maybe the chair or the Fire Irons ! They came out great, that finish is practical, if you polished them up they'd look fantastic but it would dull in no time ! That Ka-bar is a great looking knife, it may lack finesse, but it's practical and won't let you down, I can imagine batoning some firewood kindling with that !
They turned out nice. I am sitting in the twin of your oak chair. Came with a matching teacher's desk. Becker are well made and popular. Just to thick and clunky to me. I like a blade about 90 thou in thickness and a max of 125. That's just me as well as my smaller hands.
Some great tips there, your attic looks like an Aladins cave of interesting stuff. That was a great find too, they're also know as fire dogs, not sure if that's just a British thing though.
Hey !John je savais que tu ne rentrerai pas les mains vides, et j'aurais parié que tu embarquerais la balance. Par contre la réfection des chenais est vraiment superbe. Et le couteau est vraiment très bien .❤
It's not a small doctor's scale. It's a butcher's scale, goes on the counter so missus can see what she's paying for. Would have been a nice resto. A small doctor's scale, say for babies, would have a porcilane or similar finish and, usually, be dished. LOVED the andirons. I'm picking up the next throwaways I see. BIG mistake to pass on that chair. I would have wiped it down and put it straight into my study. The walnut chaiir you have waiting in the wings will be nice but not THAT nice and not nearly as comfortable. I look forward to every show. Thank you for the years of education and entertainment.
Great stuff today! The andirons came out nice. I had my bet on the scale, the chair and the brass. I couldnt figure which one from those three tho, lol.
Our dormitories at Keesler AFB (technical training school) had a lot of brass in them - all the door knobs, the bottom of the bathroom stalls had a big brass fixture attaching them to the floor, etc. and I was in charge of keeping them shiny. NEVRDULL was my best friend John - never got a demerit - lol.
We used to use Duraglit very similar. However that was touching up, when the patina is really thick you have to get tough (unless you are punishing a plebe) 🫣😂
Super nice find, my guess was the chair😅. Those andirons came out beautifully! I can't wait to get a fiber wheel myself. Thanks again and see you on Monday!
Great find! I could not tell they were brass in the walk video. I assumed they were junk. I want to give a thumbs up, but it would be a bad number, so I'll let someone else get the bad number and I'll check back in a little bit. 👍😎👍
Darn it John! 😂 so unbeknownst to you, whenever you ask a question of the audience whether it’s an opinion or otherwise, I show my wife the question being asked, and we have a friendly competition with each other, (which involves one taking the other out to dinner) you wouldn’t believe me if I told you, but she bet without hesitation that you would take those andirons 😂😂 looks like I’m out another dinner!
Nice job on the andirons. That was my second choice. I thought you would have chosen the scale. The scale looks like a hardware countertop type to weigh bulk fasteners. When it comes to furniture, I would recommend cleaning and using a beeswax finish. That chair has great character wear (aka patina). You can't beat those vintage wooden desk chairs for comfort. 👍🏻🇺🇲
Those Andirons are spectacular! Thanks for teaching me a new word as well. It looks like you took a tumble or something your forehead was scratched and it looked like your collar area was bruised, hope your ok my friend. Also from one garbage picker to another, thanks for normalizing it, I thought I was the only nut that got excited about garbage night!
The chair you are going to restore is 10 times a better chair. The chair on your walk is a poorly designed chair. The back always breaks off the arms. The oak chair is designed to be very comfortable. Southern pacific railroad used chairs very similar. The brass fireplace decorative pieces are very nice. You did another fine clean up On the fiber wheel. Thank You
Grew up with them in the house, reminded me of a Brass Urn, didn't like them then, don't like them now. I see Death when I look at them, I was glad when my Parents changed to a glass door fireplace front and got rid of those when I was about 10 or so.
I told you to ditch the fiber wheel and check out these “scotch brite” wheels with a propriety resin that binds it and gives the core some stiffness. There’s no chatter, smooth as a baby’s bottom. Course and fine wheels(180 & 220 grit respectively). They’re from a company called Pryme MX, tons of other great products for the grinder too. Flap wheels, hardware etc.. Im sure if the owner Cameron knew scout crafter was buying he’d throw some extras in the box 😏
Beautiful for the fireplace! With the remaining question , can you even have a fire with which to use them in the greater NYC area? There may be full time climatologists afoot. All joking aside they are just absolutely outstanding, dont think I’d get them near a fire.
My uncle, who's a multi-millionaire, when going through my grand parents stuff after they died just dumpstered everything.. things worth tens of thousands of pounds just because he couldn't be bothered to sell them or give them away.. the time was worth more to him
Excellent find! Came out beautiful. Not sure about the price though. I've seen some (missing the cast iron to hold the logs) going for around $30. You want to see a funny item on eBAY and need a good laugh? Look up "Carved Wooden Mallet with Bark - Possibly Froe Mallet". It's literally a piece of wood someone put on a lathe and chiseled the handle on it. They want $38 US for it and it's $30 shipping from the UK. It has to be a joke. If that's the price people will pay for that, I am going to be busy over here on my lathe with scrap logs and opening a stand at the craft shows. I do need to get some of those fiber wheels and belts. They seem to do a great job and all the cool kids are using them. 😉
Funny back in the 70’s Tarnex was everywhere on TV! I remember my Father bought a pint and we tried it out. We looked at each other like “Tgey got us good”. 🫣😂👍
The brass looks beautiful!! When you go upstate to mow your lawn how often do you sharpen you blades and do you balance them? Hope you have a wonderful weekend!!
I have one of those heaters very similar to the one you have behind you at the beginning of the video. About 0.05. Do you have any idea where I could get the ceramic element for it. I haven't had any luck finding one.
🙄Is that a antique cowboy lever action that I see at 2:49? I know your channel is not a gun channel, but how about a short Show and Tell on the rifle. 🙂
Actually that’s a non firing reproduction- I had my father’s original 30-30 model 94 but thanks to governor Cuomo passing a law in the middle of the night it made any rifle that holds more than 5 rounds illegal to own in the city. Reason 12673 why I can’t wait to leave this city.
Well you surprised me by taking the andirons. I thought for sure the chair because it looked so comfortable to sit at a desk. The chair you have from your neighbor looks like a chair that a teacher might might’ve had. Those andirons all cleaned up bring nice piece of change and if you have no use for them I hope you’re going to sell them! PS you did a nice job cutting your hair Joe would be proud!
Cheers
Joe you should be getting some kind of commission on these fiber wheels. I bet I have gone through a dozen of them in the last couple of years.
Now this is what you get when people share things instead of trying to sell info...thanks joe...🖖
Yep, Thanks for bringing them to our attention Joe! 🥃 👍 😊
Hi Joe. Can you post a link to the fiber wheels you use?
Well, I never would have guessed you would grab the andirons! But, what an awesome find! That old banker's chair is cool! I have similar one and restored it a few years back, sit in it all the time. The fiber wheel is a game changer, learned about it from your channel, but thanks to Joe as well.

I'm interested in the rifles that were standing next to it as well. I used to be an amature collector of rifles years ago, only have a few left...
Stephen- Those are replicas- Non firing. I used to have a huge firearm collection too! NYC took care of that.
You need to have longer videos, I enjoy them so much they just fly by in no time
John- For me the best videos are the ones that go by so fast. Nothing worse than watching a video and checking your watch a few times! 😂👍
Not going to happen on a SC video...🤙
Those square nuts get everywhere . Amazing the value of items people chuck out !
Yep they threw out a grand!
I can't believe the prices they get for those fireplace irons and they really turned out beautiful. I wouldn't thought to use the fiber wheel on brass, we used them for years where I worked polishing SS
Great show John thank you
Those andirons came out great! I thought it was a trick question John. I was looking for a lightbulb or power cable you would cut off lol. Great stuff
Fabulous job and good eye on those andirons, ScoutCrafter. I'm lovin' that old wooden chair. Please restore; please restore!
That Ka-Bar is quite stout. A reliable companion. Great show, thank you.
I can't believe how much that filter caught! That makes me a believer!!!!
Tim- If there is only one thing you buy that filter/fan should be it! 😃👍

Thanks Scout! Shout out to Joe, the Godfather of the fiber wheel. I have several of them because of your recommendation. Love em! 🇺🇸
I had no idea that they were brass, so nice ! 🛠👍😊
You are causing me to spend money again. Had to have a KA-Bar BK2. I have a love for knives.
I must own a few hundred knives and I can almost guarantee you are going to love this beast!!! 😃👍
Hey John...I guessed it right with the brass andirons..! We both got a good eye for beauty.
Scout you turned me on to the fiber wheels, I restore Tonka trucks and after sand blasting I head to the fiber wheel. Leaves a nice smooth finish.
They really are a game changer! Just a bit messy though. 😂👍
The andirons look beautiful! I can see why you picked them up. It is amazing how nice they turned out. Thanks for sharing this.

It’s “substantial” to say the least. 😂
Beautiful job on the brass, my friend. So satisfying to watch such a dramatic transformation. Love your channel.
Andirons - new word for me - we call them fire dogs in the UK.
Some great tips there, your attic looks like an Aladins cave of interesting stuff. That was a great find too, they're also know as fire dogs, not sure if that's just a British thing though.
Wow beautiful job and had no idea those things were selling for so much 😮

Really nice score and clean up!
Those andirons are beautiful.
Great job Mr Crafter

Nice job on the andirons. That was my second choice. I thought you would have chosen the scale. The scale looks like a hardware countertop type to weigh bulk fasteners.
When it comes to furniture, I would recommend cleaning and using a beeswax finish. That chair has great character wear (aka patina). You can't beat those vintage wooden desk chairs for comfort. 👍🏻🇺🇲
"Snoop" abides, thxs for sharing...hi Pipes
Definitely gave some patina boys heart attacks with those andirons! Great job.
All that you need to find is a Cast Iron Fireplace Back Plate. In the 80's, Virginia Metalcrafter's was my Go To Catalog Shop, for brass items.
Those Andirons are spectacular! Thanks for teaching me a new word as well. Yes! I took a tumble! 🫣😂👍
@@ScoutCrafter shit happens, looks like it didn’t phase you much
Ok. My second guess was right.
OUTSTANDING ~ BETTER THAN BRAND NEW.
I didn't think they knew what they had with them I have a beker b2bushcraft knife but my favorite is a USMC fighting knife from kbar
Larry- It’s hard to pick a favorite because it seems every knife has its specific advantages however the BK-2 feels invincible! 😃👍
I picked the andirons on your last video, and they turned out amazing. I was also hoping you saved the coal tenders from the garbage man 😢

Just wondering, what are you going to do with those irons now they're all nice? Hope you'll have a great weekend!
My Sister has a fireplace! 😃👍
Aw man. I was wrong with the scale.
What’s the deal with that Stewart tank?
1/6th scale RC tank. 😃👍

They were tossed because the owners probably inherited them or found them when they moved into that house….anyway, they’re stupid!
