@@eliandkate well sorry dont mind just had that kiddish feeling that i wanted someone like you who's really funny and creative and like all kids would want a grandmother 😇😇 not grumpy but active and creative with full of knowledge
Good afternoon! Another great vid as always, slowly making my way through them all. Love the cats, I end up watching a video twice if they are around, as I get distracted. Ha ha. No rain in Fife so far which is good as I need to finish tidying up outside and pop online to order seeds for next year. Enjoy the rest of your weekend guys!
Awesome! Thank you! I will ask the cats to pop into a few more videos just for you - although they are both getting a bit big for their boots and demanding "riders". Apparently whiskers isn't good enough now and they want sheba!!!
Muching has been a frequent request so who am I to disappoint? As always if you liked this video I'd really appreciate you sharing far and wide (ok with friends and on social media). Here's the link to make it easier: ruclips.net/video/jim07Vr_o00/видео.html
Great video and good to mention not to use Hay because it could contain weeds and we don't want them. Compost which my allotment area can get a delivery of compost from the local council but unfortunately the area where it's dumped is surrounded by weeds so we have to make sure it doesn't contain any when we use it.
Oh no, weeds in your compost is like the 7th level of hell and should be saved for those lazy gardeners who don't mulch ha ha ha ha h not really :) Have you ever tried sterilising your compost? Might help if you would rather use the local stuff, although it can be a total faff.
Great video Eli. Lots I didn't know in here, including straw vs hay, coloured bark and "chuckies". Must have been named by naughty children! 😁 I haven't mulched before, but this year I'll be adding spent compost and manure to the front garden. It won't help with the weeds, but it needs a feed. 👍
Hee hee hee I did think about the implications of "chuckies" and kids throwing stones lol Feeding the soil is super important - way more so than mulch in my opinion.
Great advice in this video! I really depend on mulch to retain moisture in my beds and containers throughout my hot, dry northern California summers. I use what I have on hand - woodchips and "spent" hay, the latter being mostly straw, mixed with sheep manure. They've both worked super well. Sheep droppings are a cold manure, safe and nutritious for my plants immediately. Like you, I sometimes forget for a bit, but the hot sun usually reminds me pretty quickly. ☺️
Great tip! We seem to have the opposite problems from each other. It rains so much here that my big thing I CANNOT forget is to raise the pots and containers off the ground so the plants don't drown. :)
Just planted 12 blue berrys plants today after ordering them in the spring and growing them in. Container spring through summer putting my mulch down I'm in the USA the state of Kansas are temperatures are usually a hundred degrees set timer didn't want them to die
fabulous! A great tip for blueberries is to use an acidic mulch, something like pine needles :). This helps to keep the blueberries happy with slightly acidic soil :)
Great video. I have a question about the weed covering.. doesn't it stop the soil beneath from getting air circulation? Wouldn't it just become all mouldy underneath?
Hey Danny :) Oh, good question!! Hmmm, short answer is no, not if it's the organic type. It's just like putting another layer of soil over the top so the air passes through just like it does soil. Obviously, if you were to put something down like plastic or whatever, that might be different. And, remember mulch isn't a permanent layer, you do replace - especially since the organic stuff will compost down (break down) over time. Hope that helps (and I love that shirt on your profile pic) :)
Does Mulch help stop weeds? I work away from home for extended time and my flowers bed gets chocked with grass and weeds! Sometimes im not home long enough to adress it so after a few years i have to dig the flower beds up and start over
I'm glad you enjoyed the video Kim. The ethos of this channel is very much about keeping things simple, jargon free and fun. I'm glad that seems to be working, I want everyone to feel welcome here regardless of experience or abilities :)
Hmmmm in my experience…Nothing will stop them completely in terms of mulch. Ignore all the stuff on social media, its not true 😢 The closest I’ve found to useful has been the horticultural grit… but it’s a pain in other ways…. I think the best compromise for me was straw. But You are much better trying to stop them with your behaviour than a mulch… by not planting lots in a small space, allowing lots of gaps as they prefer being covered and safe. Also they like it damp so try not to over do things with the watering

So, Eli, do you just till the mulch into the soil after one season? Or do you gather and remove it and throw it in the compost pile?
it's not strictly after one season, but when I think it's past it's best it goes in the compost. :D Keeps my compost bin happy

Coulnd't figure out what's use of mulch
A couple of different thjngs. Helps keep weeds down and helps prevent evaporation of moisture
Where is that cozy and beautiful accent from?
It’s a west coast of Scotland accent
