Hey Andrew! I was checking out this receiver to pair with a future pair of Wharfedale Linton Heritage, but as 4ohm speakers, I should then go with the 5000 I imagine? I could also go for a stereo amplifier to pair with these such as an Audiolab 6000A, but I feel like the room correction is something that I need. Maybe it is not however? Can you lend me a hand?
hey !! mr andrew hope you nitice this.. im avid fan of yours.. may i ask if this receiver can use polk audio xt 70 , xt 30 , xt20 , xt90 ? please thanks.
Andrew. I just bought an AN1000. I’m putting overheads in the ceiling for my surrounds. Can I add an extra on each channel and is so, how would I wire them. I’ll be using Polk Audio RC60i 6.5"
@Andrew Rivett Nice one I've been looking at the AN1000 myself it's a bit pricey here in New Zealand at $1890. NZD and the parallel sub outs put me off, I purchased my first sony 5.1 receiver in 1999 it lasted best part of 20 years before HDMI became such a must have pain in the ass. I have a yammy RX- V483 set up as 3.1 in the bedroom I think I prefer the Yammy sound but once again the RX-V6A are the best part of $2000 here and I got 2 teenage daughters with 2 cats a wife and a bulldog to feed I gotta get my priorities right I need a new system. I'm jamming Teskey Bros on the 1050 right now running all 6 of my wharfedale 9.5 towers and 3 subs rocking the hood
My Yamaha RX-A2A is a very nice receiver and was a good match to my Klipsch RP-8000F. Now here comes the Sony STR-AZ5000ES with 360 SSM and I’m speechless. WOW. The Klipsch now sound more detailed, more defined, the lows are solid. Music takes a new meaning. Movies sound better than our Dallas/Ft Worth theaters! Last night we saw the first episode of The Last of Us and when the plane crashed, we swear it hit our roof! Goodness Gracious, the 5000ES is one impressive receiver. I’m keeping it. Street explosions felt like we were there.
Sony receivers are always so much fun. I wish they would bring back all of the DSP sound modes from the past. It was fun to play around with when you were gaming or just messing around. Use to be so much fun back when I was a teenager. Great review.
When I came 2-Channel stereo audio, I actually preferred the sound of my budget £400 Sony STR dn1080 over the £2,000 Denon 6500. The sound of Sony will always have a place in my heart 💚
Funny, I secretly also thought the sound of my ‘budget’ Sony 1080 bested my ‘respected’ 2 channel amps of Yamaha, Audiolab and Emotiva. The measly 1080 - It made my Linton’s rock and my Klipsch purr noticeably better than my three other amps. It was a secret that I would never speak of, that is, until now. Thanks for being a comment trailblazer for us closet Sony fans!
Being back in the world in which Sony and Onkyo are the go too options is crazy. I’m here for it though. Brands coming back to rattle up the market and bring good value only helps everyone
I was the owner of the 1080, It died on me last year, then I got the Yamaha TRS-700, and I did not like the sound of it, then on Monday I got the new Sony that you are reviewing now, nothing hits like a Sony receiver, I just love Sony bass, I also have the wireless surrounds and I didn't have any issues with connectivity. It's just like my old 1080 and I love it. Awesome review. Keep up the great work!
That is interesting, because the reviews I've seen so far not only give praise to that particular Yamaha AVR, but they also say it sounds similar to this Sony. Not the case?
After getting my 98X90L I was looking at getting a new receiver to upgrade from my 12 year old Yamaha receiver. I wanted to step up to Atmos and Spatial Audio for my home entertainment experience. You have done it again. Great review- I went out and bought the STR AN1000 a couple of weeks ago. I couldn't be happier. The enveloping sound is amazing. You have done it again. A great review that is dead on accurate.
No kidding, I just picked the AN1000 yesterday. I figured it would have plenty of the magic of the new 7000ES (having watched your reivew) and be more than sufficient for my intro level setup. So far it's been flawless
I’m screaming in excitement. Not only for this to replace my 1080 but also since you used Klipsch RP like I do and YOU ALSO HAVE THE NEW DEF TECH SPEAKERS IN!!!! I can’t wait to hear about those!
I still run dn1080 since the launch. Works perfectly, still doesnt lack anything that I would miss, eArc works flawlessly. Have been running it 5-12h/day since the launch.
12:57 As a Sony fan since the 1990's I have owned Sony base models, ES models, and 9000 ES Separates. Yes, Kristi is right there is a difference between their base models and their ES models. I my opinion the non-ES models sound a little thinner (not as "full" sounding) The ES models have a large transformer that provides for better all-around sound.
I got the Sony STR-AN1000 and I rly like its cinemastic sound. Sadly I am kinda getting annoyed about its white noise it does in 360 and phantom speaker mode :(
I have a Sony STR-DH790 and it's been a great home theater receiver. Paired with Polk bookshelf and a JBL Subwoofer I have a very good sound system. Might not be a true audiophile system but does the job for me.
I agree. It just needs a fan. It's one of the best audio bargains out there. I got a brand new one for less than 300. I upgraded only for overhead speakers but find myself sick of Audyssey and the way music sounds in the Denon ..even after adjusting the curve.
@@missing1102 When I went from the 790 to the S950H I gained network connectivity and that's about it. Basic Audyssey Was not the step up I thought it would be.
I went from the 790 to a Denon 4400 has auro 3D. It's a nice avr but the price difference was a lot. I realized that I couldn't hear the price difference at all. The 4400 still sells used for 3x as much as the 790.
@@andrewrobinsonreviews "Don't want to blow your budget but want to enjoy a higher-end functionality" - Ya..😮💨 That's where I'm at right now! Was sold on shifting to the AN1000 but Drew you & Kristie have me considering that AN5K
I love that they kept the form factor! I have the 1060 and that fits perfectly in my media cabinet. Sacrilege I know 🤗 but it’s been roasting in this cabinet for 5-6 years without any issues. Not having to buy a new cabinet is a huge huge plus for me.
For enthusiasts, your videos are very enjoyable, entertaining, and the educational portions are a wonderful and meaningful . Kristi is the perfect balance I love that she stays off camera, sooo mysterious and fun. Thank you both
I have been using a Sony AVR (STR-DN850) strictly for stereo music listening (no signal processing). I really like its tonality - clear and open sound.
Another great video Andrew! While I don't always choose Sony over a competing product, I have never owned a Sony product I regretted purchasing. Nice to hear that the Yamaha RX-V6A (TSR-700) is still in the mix for comparisons. I suspect the STR-AN1000 is less buggy than the RX-V6A but at the same time I do like that the RX-V6A has LF/RF pre-outs and a built-in phono pre-amp. I don't like the trend of entry AVRs not having LF/RF pre-outs. Adding an external amplifier to a "beginner" AVR can be a great upgrade to your system and allows you to keep that budget AVR around a lot longer in your audiophile journey. My two cents.
I love my DN1080, have had it since 2020. As much as I'd like to experience the new 3d spacial technology that the 1000 provides, my current expenses and living space cant justify the purchase. Once that all changes, I'll definitely consider one.
Given that Australia is only getting this model, this review is appreciated. My integra 60.6 is hanging in there though, so hopefully by the time it goes to silicon heaven the 5000 will be available locally. Thanks for the great work. The work you both put in to produce high quality videos each week is seen, respected and greatly appreciated!
It seems outside of North America its the same case. And while I did like my 1080 it was overated to be honest. Probably best going with another company who can be bothered to actually sell they're products.
It absolutely gives me the SH1TS that they won’t sell the range to other markets. I need a model with pre outs and more power. But I can’t get them in Aus. Boo Sony.
Ok, so the Sony video on the AN1000 tells us it has bi-directional Bluetooth (most commonly to connect headphones, I’d guess). This could be a semi-essential feature for some people and it would be nice if the description went beyond “it has Bluetooth”. And, seriously, it would be a killer feature in a soundbar (we have a Samsung HW-B650 in the bedroom without this feature), which I’d have to think is mostly a bedroom or apartment audio enhancement and where you wouldn’t want to bother nearby people sometimes. It might be a good idea to include this information in the discussion of receivers as it’s being included in more receivers (and I’d hope soundbars) and would be good to know. Thanks!
If it didn't have all the little glitches, I probably would like it, but when you go into the menu screen it doesn't continue watching or hearing what you're playing on your regular television like Netflix or anything. Any of the apps it converts back to regular TV. The GUI interface is just not intuitive
Thank you so much...love your videos. Your recommendation and overview of the 360 spatial mapping+virtual speakers made all the difference. After years of budget 5.1 receivers (Yamaha and Onkyo)...I finally moved up to Atmos and bought and setup a new Sony 1000 7.2 atmos receiver yesterday(including using amazon basics banana plugs which are awesome). This decision was driven purely for the 360 spatial mapping+virtual speaker placement correction along with virtual surround backs (makes my 5.2.2 setup seem as having more speakers)...I used the "engineer" sound curve (“the Sony listening room standard” frequency characteristics)....simply mind blowing! I never knew my system could sound so massive, so enveloping, and so crisp/clean. It is the first time ever I ran a calibration and never needed to make a single adjustment. It's wonderful. I don't need external amps as I never listen at reference levels nor do I have demanding speakers in my relatively small/medium room.
You would have to use a turntable with a built-in phono preamp, use a third party phono preamp or a turntable that uses Bluetooth, which Sony makes a table like that.
I've had zero problems with Sony wireless connectivity with the wireless SW5 sub and SA-RS5 surrounds, although i am using the Sony STR-AZ5000ES receiver
I wouldn't buy the new Sony receivers for now if I were you. I bought a AN1000 along with AZ5000ES around 2.5 weeks ago and now they are both having issues. They freeze every so often when switching between Apple TV 4K and PS5 or other source connected to HDMI. It shows the picture, but no sound. The display keeps showing the input source, in my case: Media Box FOREVER and it will not go off. I need to unplug the receivers and turn them back on in order to make them work again. The most annoying thing is once I unplug, it takes almost 2 full minutes for them to be able to function again. The display will show " PLEASE WAIT" until it start working again. The freezing issues used to happen once every 3 days, but now it does that every single day. The 360 sound is amazing and I enjoy listening to spatial music on them, the surround effect is definitely better than my Denon 4800H and my Arcam 21, but the quality control of the Sony AVRS is questionable. Fortunately, I can still return them and 100% they will be packed up today.
Mine is at the repair centre because it kept freezing when coming out of standby, then rebooting itself. Temporarily bought a 2nd hand Yamaha to replace it for a fraction of the money, rock solid!
I have a suggestion for your music list for speaker and AVR testing. Schwartz and Funk " Diamonds of Lounge ". Very dynamic tracks. To easily give speakers and AVR's a complete workout. Time to step up and add something new to your Playlist. Don't you have Tidal Premium? Give it a shot. When Christy polks her head out of her office to ask " what are you listening to "? You have a winner. Great for evening listening.
This sony also has a tendancy to get so hot you can fry eggs on it cranked up after 5 minutes i had to put a fan on it and that does actually preve.nt it from over heating and i had to give it all kinds of help with powered subwoofers and i miked the speakers into bass amplifiers then it's not too bad but it just sucks that the stereo alone without all of that extra help it sounds like a transister radio and you gotta turn it all the way up just to hear it
Well Andrew, you sold me again. In October 2017, I replaced my 14 year old JVC 8030-VBK Home Theatre receiver, which suddenly stopped working, with the Sony STR-DN1080. I chose the Sony based on your (and several other) RUclips reviews and recommendations. I was not disappointed, and felt that it was a great value. (I think I paid $550 at Best Buy, with a $100 off sale price). At 14 years and $318, the JVC 8030 certainly had a good run. 2017 for me was kind of the year of Sony, and the refresh cycle for all of my aging home theatre equipment. I replaced my 12 year old JVC 52Z575 rear projection TV (purchased in Jan 2005 at Sears for an unbelievable $2862!) with the Sony XBR65X930E 4K UHD TV (purchased at Best Buy in Dec 2017 for $2000). The JVC 52Z575 stillI works just fine, but is only 720p, doesn't have a built-in ATSC digital tuner, and being a rear projection TV, requires a substantial warm up and cool down period to help prolong bulb life. (Fortunately, I never had to replace the bulb, which was about a $300 part) Also the cooling fan was noticeably noisy in the background, but at the time it was cutting edge technology (first generation progressive 720p HD vs 1080i interlaced HD). I replaced my 10 year old Sony BDP-301 Blu-ray player with the Sony UBP-X800. (purchased at Best Buy for $200). Like the JVC TV, the BDP-301 still works just fine, but is incredibly slow by todays standards (well, let's be honest, it was was unbearably slow, even when it was new!🤣). It was a first generation Blu-ray player, and really had inadequate memory and processor power at the time for the Blu-ray 1080p HD standard. Over the past month or so, the STR-DN1080 has suddenly starting exhibiting problem signs. The soft start power relays will occasionally suddenly shut off and then try numerous times to cycle back on. Eventually it gets there and turns back on, but the problem has been getting worse lately. A couple days ago, this issue happened more than a half dozen times in a row, taking several minutes to recover each time. I decided that maybe it was time to start looking for a good replacement. I looked at Sony's web site and saw the AN1000, then I searched RUclips, and and here you are again, reviewing the brand new STR-AN1000, which is the successor to STR-DN1080. I watched your review, and then went to Best Buy's web site and placed the order yesterday. It was delivered today. I haven't got it installed yet but am looking forward to it. Just as a side note, in reviewing my purchase history (I have used Quicken since 1998, and used MacMoney from 1985 to 1998 to manage my finances, so the history is very easy to access and review), I notice that the older hardware either lasted much longer (14 years, 12 years, 10 years), or never actually failed, but just eventually became obsolete. The STR-DN1080 on the other hand has only lasted half that time at 6 years. As you stated in your review, the technology in the AN1000 is significantly better than what was in the DN1080, and arguably after 6 years, the technological improvements justify the need to replace it, but I probably wouldn't have been looking or done so if wasn't showing signs of impending failure. It has been working great for 6 years, and if it wasn't failing, I might have been more than happy to use it for another 6 years. On the other hand, I paid $650 for the AN1000, which was the same price as the DN1080 6 years ago. In that respect, to pay the same price 6 years later, but get 6 year newer technology, it not such a bad deal. And at $600 for 6 years use of the DN1080, or $100 /year = $8.33/month, I think I got great value for the money spent, even if I wasn't planning on replacing it now. And with the serendipitous release of the AN1000, the timing couldn't have been better. Thanks again for another great review and timely recommendation!.
I have a pioneer VSX 534 in my bedroom and small Polk audio speakers. I think this is a great choice for my home theater bedroom system. What I like about my pioneer is the center channel sounds so sweet after working with the settings. I hope the center will sound as good with the Sony. Thank you very much for the review. I was eager for this review before I buy it. Great job Mr. Andrew.
I have a Audio-Technica LP140XP, PS5, and Sony OLED TV at home and need to upgrade my receiver so I was looking at this as a great all in one. I know you mentioned that one would need an external phono preamp and I was wondering if you had any recommendations on what I should use to connect the two? Also, thank you for teaching me so much! I have been watching your channel for a bit now and it's been an awesome ride!
I’ve been hoping to upgrade my living room system from a Sonos Beam Gen1 to a quality 2.1 without breaking the bank, and I think these just might do it. Thanks for the detailed review!
Happy Sunday Andrew and Kristi. Funniest thing I was waiting for 11:00am EST for the video to drop. Last night we moved the clocks forward so with that being said, I will adjust my schedule to watch your videos until we readjust our clocks later this year. Have a wonderful Sunday all
Great review. I have a couple of questions for you and Kristi. Which sounds better in 2 channel music and has the best voice clarity - RZ50, Sony AN1000/ES1000, Marantz SR5015 or Yamaha A4a? Does the Sony room correction rival Dirac? Pairing with Focal Chora 826 towers
Much thanks, Andrew. One question: what kind of features does this receiver support for playing movies without annoying your building neighbors. Older models seem to have "night mode" listening mode, but I can't find any such feature in the manual of this new receiver. In contrast and as an example: Denon receivers have divers options within the Audyssey settings that help you listen at low volumes (without excessive bass), yet not missing out on details.
Sony has always been a product that sees discounts throughout the year. I expect this to see a good discount around black Friday down the road adding a competitive price to performance proposition. Cheers from San Antonio TX!
Wanted to get the 5000 here in Australia. Not possible as they don't do 240v power supplies on their es line. Calculated the cost to import the $3000 aud receiver, would cost me $1700 just to get it here and use a step down transformer with a good enough rating. That is $4700 (marantz 40 cinema cost) just to get in in and maybe the step down could be an issue. 😢 Don't understand why Sony doesn't share the ES series down under. For such a large company, why leave us out. 😢
I must applause what Kristi often do ...by bringing out comparison to older model..in this video comparing to 1080.. for those who try to compare the AN1000 to older model.. really appreciate the comparison
Alrighty then... my question for you is with the price of the Onkyo TX-RZ50 coming down, you could arguably pick up the RZ50 for only a couple of $100 more. Which one do you go with?
I recently bought one of these to replace a Marantz SR6007. I am just working through some other theatre updates (new 4k Sony projector needed a new Hdmi line run through the ceiling) but I am very excited to hook it up and try it. Picked it up from a like-new amazon warehouse deal so it was like 40% off. My theatre is a 7.1 setup circa 2013ish. Gonna blast into the future pretty soon, feels like 😁
Glad to see this receiver works well for all the gaming settings, currently I’ll stick with the simplicity of a soundbar for tv at least , but it’s good to see how receiver technology is improving over time.
Always following from Kenya 🇰🇪, East Africa - Always short and to the point! Quick ones/advice? 1. Amongst sets of: AVRS Sony STR - AN1000 or ES - AZ3000 (8K), OR, Denon XR2800H or XR3800H Which one would you recommend as an all round and value for money (future proof). 2. Amongst sets of Speakers of: Sony/Klipsch/Sonos for 5.1.2 set up, Which one would you recommend for the above chosen AVR?
i watched this video like 8 times before i made up my mind, I want to upgrade my receiver I have a denon entry level 5.2.2 i decided to buy this one for the key words you mentioned "sony's cinematic presence is undeniable", "sony's spatial mapping sauce", " sony's spatial mapping is a game changer",
Bought the 1080 about 2.5 years ago for about $650 Best Buy because a very expensive Yamaha I had for years finally had sections die and I was in a hurry. First impressions were plenty of power, ran hot, menu system I hated, my music never sounded so clean but we watch movies a lot and after fiddling with all the Sony special sauce I could not get clean dialog to our liking. Sold on ebay in 5min and bought TSR-700. Love it, love the app, plenty of power for what I do and just plain Yamaha useability. Loved your review and I still like that $2k Sony ES, lol! Next up, new center speaker for us.
SN1000 or AZ1000ES? From what I can tell the SN is more power with less of a warranty at 2yrs instead of 5. The power difference is concerning to me but which would you recommend? I would do the AZ5000 but that would require replacing my entire cabinet.
I would love this receiver. I'm using an ancient SONY STR DN-1020 with over 10 years. I can't go for one of those taller AV receivers because the shelf I have my receiver on is about 5" taller than my current receiver so the taller ones wouldn't fit
I’ve owned Denon in the past and while they sound good, the quality is crap in my experience. I currently have a Yamaha RX-V685 which I like and is built like a tank. It’s worked flawlessly for 6 years, including WiFi, Bluetooth etc. The Sony 360 spatial sound is getting all good reviews, but I’m curious as to the quality of Sony receivers and if it’s comparable to Yamaha.
Grabbed this receiver yesterday based on the overall decent reviews to replace a ten year old Marantz that wasn't passing through HDR to my LG C1. Curious to hear how it sounds with my Monitor Audio mains / center and sub. Should be good for the casual use of my rec room. I am fine with the Marantz for AVR/Cinema, but always found the sound a bit flat or slightly dull for less dynamic tracks when 2 channel listening.
Hi. random question but when you startup your an1000, do you happen to get a pretty loud/startling metallic thunk sound/noise. It’s not the sound of relay clicks or anything but almost sounds like something hitting the metal casing of the receiver pretty heavily hard.
@@azurevolleyball8720 I just started it four times, the first time, a couple audible clicks, but not startling. Sounded normal for a receiver. I tried it a second time, actually got an audible metallic click, almost a thunk noise like something smacked the chassis itself. Kinda weird. Third time was normal, forth time it thunked again pretty loud. 🤷🏻♂️
@@gabeah Yeap that’s the same thing I get randomly. 3 out of 5 times I turned on the an1000 I get a very loud thunk know like something was hitting the metal case of the receiver. I honestly thought something blew inside or fell onto the receiver. I started testing and noticed it happened sporadically. Not sure if it’s a normal thing or not because I’ve never once heard it before on any other receivers I’ve had.
Got the new STR-AN1000. Upgraded from Denon avr 2500h. I'm going to say I was not expecting this of an upgrade to the sound and dynamics. The bass is wayyyy better on Sony, music, movies, games sound better. The 360 audio I have to admit sounds soo good. I recommend it, but keep in mind that there are bugs, the avr can bug out here and there but overall very good.
In my region the Sony STR-AN1000 and the Marantz Cinema 60 are the same price at £999. My main usage is Apple TV, 4K Blu-Rays and PS5. Which should I go for? Thanks in advance.
I’m in the same boat, can’t decide between the two, want to get the best stereo sound for music and think the marantz will be better. What did you go with?
I started my home theater journey with a true budget Sony receiver (sub $500) and eventually upgraded to a low-mid-tier Onkyo and couldn’t believe the difference in sound quality. Specs aside, there are real differences between receivers at different price points. Sometimes hard to grasp in product reviews
How much did the mid tier Onkyo cost? Just curious what the price difference was. I have a Sony dh770 from 2017. A $300 receiver and will probably upgrade here within two years. I want to upgrade my tv first to a Sony 65 inch either the X90L or X93L this holiday season when the prices drop.
I just picked up a Sony strdh550 out of the trash and I like it a lot ! ! Mine looks the same as what you have. Front and back look the same as my stereo minus the eathernet connecton. Its 2 00 watts of beautiful power Thats the words I have been looking for (Dynamic Sound )
I'm on the fence between this receiver the denon x2700h and the Onkyo tx-nr7100. I can currently get a deal on the Onkyo for $50 less than the Sony brand new. Probably 95% of my use is home theater for tv, movies etc with maybe 5% music, that's the one reason I'm considering the Sony because of the great reviews I've heard regarding is 360 degree audio. Any thoughts?
Hello, with this Sony receiver, is it possible to integrate an entire Sonos system with an Apple TV? I mean, I want to connect my Apple TV to the receiver through its HDMI input, then pass the video signal from the receiver to the TV, while keeping the sound in the receiver, so that it can transmit the sound to my sonos arc soundbar with the sub and always maintain the Atmos effect. Additionally, can I add ceiling speakers for height channels apart from the Sonos system? Thanks,
I just bought to 5000 es over the Onkyo TX-RZ50....did I make a mistake? I have some old Definitive Technology 7007 towers, center and couple of bookshelf
I bought my STR-DN1080 thru massdrop - years ago and it continues to rock - no issues (less than$300…) It does the job every day And my DN1000 did, the DN1020 I sourced for a friends’ setup (still rocking), DN1040 (another friend), DN1050 (still another friend - also still rocking) I would jump on a 7000ES if I had the money - and would stay with my 1080 over the AN1000 I have driven a lot of crazy with my 1080 in a mid size room (Celestion AFP sats and a PSB sub that no one has ever seen…)
The main question I have is a comparison between the new Sony receivers with 360 audio vs the Sony HT-A9. You gave a wonderful review of the HT-A9 especially your description of the sounds in A Quite Place and A Quite Place II. Can your home speakers like the Klipsch speakers re-create the sound definition you described on the A9s?
Str-dn1080 is built for 7.1 channel, while this an1000 you need to set for surround to reach the 7.1 channel if you dont you will just have 5.1 channel if have total of 8 speaker 2 wont work or maybe i miss something on the settings
New Sony unit the first updated release in 5 years I was pumped to get it Opened box it at nephews he's your classic audiophile been collecting equipment for 30 years We hook up a pair of B&W DM604 S3 towers and they sound great...so lets see what they can do. At level 5 on the volume control they started to come alive at level 6 we started laughing how good they sounded. Level 6.1 the receiver go into power protection mode and shuts down, he states its the chip protection kicking in leaving 40% of the power inaccessible. Rebooted a couple of time same result
Bought some starter jamo cinema speakers. Now I need a reciever. Hope to find something on sale. Patient, but inpatient. Love your reviews. Thank you both. Always informative and well put together.
Hi Andrew, I am considering this receiver and have one question. Will this Sony power my B&W 804 Matrix without issues? I listen at moderate volume levels. Thank you.
I have an all Audioengine speaker setup. 6 P4 book shelf speakers and 2 S8 subs. I had never really thought too mouth about impedance, as I just bought the speakers I thought looked cool when I was younger. Now I’m refreshing my home theatre and I’m wondering what receiver would be best to drive these speakers. Does their 4ohm impedance make them “hard to drive” with a receiver like this one?
Good review. Would the Str An1000 have any trouble driving a 5.2.2 setup with 2 polk xt60s, 2 polk xt20s, a polk xt30, and two subs? Your review of the xt60s convinced me to go all polk and lm curious if the Str AN1000 has enough power. Thanks.
I pulled the plug and an finally going for a surround system. At 45 yrs old it is a bit of late start. I ordered this reciever and klipsch reference atmos during prime day. Since April I have had jamo studio series s sitting in original box. Have a powered sub connected to the fives at my desk that will be moved as the fives don't really need a sub. Either I hook the system up in my living room or I go to the basement where there are rafters that I might cover with moving blankets (rental so can't alter the place). Any tips or tricks? Much appreciated.
The Sony A/V receiver comeback continues. This is what I call the Best Buy or the Costco receiver, the one made for the mainstream budget-conscious shopper that they'll pick up at Best Buy or Costco or Sam's Club. A great deal that they don't have to think over too hard or fuss about. The one without any preamp out jacks that gives you exactly what is being advertised, no more and no less. Every AVR maker sells a model specifically geared towards this market and while we enthusiasts snub our noses at it, I'd be willing to bet my current Denon 3600H that this is in fact where the majority of the A/V receiver market actually lies and Sony is wise to tackle it again with this refresh that gives some of the great ES refreshed lineup features for a decent price. Glad it got a good review from you guys.
I’m new to this and I think I MAY fall into the category in that I am willing to spend a bit more but I’m uneducated. I’m trying to push a 7.2 with Klipsch speakers and 2 subs. I think this is the one but I keep hearing little contradictory things (like it’s only 5.1 or I can’t go past 4 ohms on speakers when mine are 8). What do you think?
@@alejandronopasanada5302 Per the manual itself, the AN1000 is a 7.2 system and can handle 7 speakers and 2 subwoofers maximum with impedance of 6 ohms to 16 ohms. That's pretty common for a home AVR receiver. I don't think you'll have a problem connecting your Klipsch speakers and subs.

@@bronstet Thank you so much. I renovating my house and on this topic I was very lost. I just want to be domesticated and pop in some mindless TV or PlayStation. Thank you.
For anyone who owns this Receiver, how is the wireless connectivity of the surround speakers? That’s my only reason why am considering it. Do they work well or as mentioned in the video, the connection keep dropping ?Thanks
I was told at Best Buy that the calibration and set up would not work well in my open concept space with all speakers in the ceiling. Others have suggested that it’s still better than lesser cost receivers. What’s your opinion on the value of the set up system in this situation?
One of the issues of the Str DN 1080 that really annoys me is that it doesn't utilize the Dolby Atmos speakers when listening to DTS X. Does the AN1000 utilize the Dolby Atmos speakers when playing DTSX?
Would this Sony receiver be enough to power the Polk R200’s along with a center channel and a pair of height speakers? Any advice would be appreciated!
Those are the bookshelves right? I think they are 8 ohms sounds like you would be good but keep in mind you can't add an Amp. Best buy has this for 400 right now at best buy too
I have the 1080 and will likely upgrade. I connect a turntable to the 1080 today (I have an external pre-amp) but I can’t find the ideal settings. Is it any easier on the new model? I want it to be as true to life as possible without a lot of sonic trickery, but I also want to be able to use the subwoofer. Open to any and all recommendations! No, my record player doesn’t have Bluetooth.
I’m glad Sony is back in this space and with strong products to boot. That’s awesome. They’ve always had sort of a charm to their AV products and this is no exception. I wish it had a phono, but I know it would’ve raised the price quite a bit. That being said, Alva TT to everyone with this receiver, and you’re good to go. Great video and conversation!
I think more and more vinyl rigs will likely start having wireless connections (don't hate me audiophiles) in which case the need for a phono preamp will no doubt diminish. People have to face facts, that while vinyl sales may have overtaken CDs, both are at all-time lows compared to where they once were, so it's not as if the. market is rapidly growing.
@@andrewrobinsonreviews that is true. I love the experience itself of using the vinyl personally probably more then the sound itself. And wireless option is perfect for me on vinyl, I don’t care about audiophile stuff about wired only. More companies should go wireless and mess free. It is the future of everything. We park some cars wirelessly nowadays.
A few questions. Does this Sony line offer the ability to configure the system to watch video and listen to music? Does the home menu come up when using HDMI to turn on multiple components st same time? This was an annoying issue with my old Sony.
I'm running a 5.1 setup with Energy RC speakers all around, Hsu VTF 15H sub and a Denon 4520 receiver. The Denon died, so using an entry level Onkyo unsure of the model. Was looking at a refurb Onkyo RZ50 for $800, but the Sony 360 sound mapping is very intriguing. I keep going back and forth on which model. Would like to finally try Atmos be it 5.1.2, 5.1.4, 7.1.2, just flustered at the options.
Can I use speakers of my old 5.1 Sony DZ610 DVD system with this receiver? Each speaker is of 167 watts. I also want to use 2 new Subs, SA-SW5 with it. I will need to add 2 speakers for height. I also have a new soundbar HT-A5000, not sure what will be use of that one if I go for AN-1000 😅
I just got a brand new unit from Best Buy for $500. I’m getting an incredibly audible hiss from my speakers. I’m running 3.0 right now, all klipsch. For RUclips, volume 30 is incredibly loud and there is no hiss, but for Netflix or other movie/show content, I have to raise the to like 60 to achieve the volume level. At 60, the hiss is incredibly audible. I’ve tried a few things to reduce noise floor and such, but haven’t seen much of a difference. Does my unit have issues? L+R R-50M Center RP-404C

Can you lend me a hand?
hey !! mr andrew hope you nitice this.. im avid fan of yours.. may i ask if this receiver can use polk audio xt 70 , xt 30 , xt20 , xt90 ? please thanks.
so what about the pioneer VSX 935 AV receiver , comparing it to the Sony STR AN 1000 ?
what does it mean ONE channel driven?
Andrew. I just bought an AN1000. I’m putting overheads in the ceiling for my surrounds.
Can I add an extra on each channel and is so, how would I wire them.
I’ll be using Polk Audio RC60i 6.5"
So I can upgrade my old STR-DN1050 to these newer models and the wife won't notice the difference as they look so similar
Well said sir you and I are in the right thinking. I have the DN1080 and I just ordered the AN1000 thank god they look the exact same lol
Genius. Thank you
Exactly! When I came home with a 77" OLED it was a fair bit more difficult to hide than a new avr.
@@LordZaleeping my girl just stop putting out for a little over a week but it’s totally worth it though
💯right
They both should sound the exact same.
I upgraded to a Denon and I like Auro but the Sony sounds better for two channel and the price difference is insane.
Indeed, I still enjoy listening stereo by my Sony TA-F 700ES, bought 1988 from my first regular income.
Being back in the world in which Sony and Onkyo are the go too options is crazy. I’m here for it though. Brands coming back to rattle up the market and bring good value only helps everyone
Still rocking my 30 kg onkyo a9070. What a beast.
So glad to hear! Thanks for watching!
That's great to hear. Thanks for sharing!
I’m screaming in excitement. Not only for this to replace my 1080 but also since you used Klipsch RP like I do and YOU ALSO HAVE THE NEW DEF TECH SPEAKERS IN!!!! I can’t wait to hear about those!
You're the first to catch that :).
Would adding a decent subwoofer mitigate the difference?
I got the Sony STR-AN1000 and I rly like its cinemastic sound. Sadly I am kinda getting annoyed about its white noise it does in 360 and phantom speaker mode :(
So what are the main differences between the Sony str-an1000 vs str-az1000es? Is it just the detachable power cord and a RS-232 port?
As a 1080 owner, man I was waiting for this one... Lemme go get comfy!
Yes, settle in because there is a lot to go over in this video.
It is a very clean sound for sure!
Don't disagree with your 2 cents Bryan. Having even a pair of stereo preamp outs would've been welcomed!
@@andrewrobinsonreviews Interested in the new Sony. I currently own a Yamaha A4A, would you say it would be worth changing from this to the Sony?
I love my DN1080, have had it since 2020. As much as I'd like to experience the new 3d spacial technology that the 1000 provides, my current expenses and living space cant justify the purchase. Once that all changes, I'll definitely consider one.
Also, thanks for mentioning that the video switching is improved on the AN1000. My 1080 is problematic. Especially with my Sony 65” Bravia OLED A8F
Boo Sony.
It's weird. Like they don't even bother. Only important market seem to be the US?
Thanks!
It seems like a compelling option in its space. Thanks for covering it!
This brings me back when I started with a receiver. Eventually, this highway to he'll has led me to separates. Sound has became apart of my life.
If it didn't have all the little glitches, I probably would like it, but when you go into the menu screen it doesn't continue watching or hearing what you're playing on your regular television like Netflix or anything. Any of the apps it converts back to regular TV. The GUI interface is just not intuitive
Spatial 360 or Dirac Live? The Pioneer lx305 and Sony an1000 can be had for the same price.
In regards to playing vinyl. How can you connect a preamp to this receiver if there are no pre-outs?
You would have to use a turntable with a built-in phono preamp, use a third party phono preamp or a turntable that uses Bluetooth, which Sony makes a table like that.
Beautiful review! I was between this and the x1700h but this made me clear on the sony, thank you.
Glad you found it helpful!
What loudspeakers to use?? Right, left, mid-speaker and two back-speakers. If I want the very best sound and result, -what speakers to choose?
You briefly mentioned the warranty better on the ES1000, any tangible reason to spend the extra $200 on the ES1000 over the AN1000?
Does the Sony STR AN1000 sound harsh and bright like the Sony STR DN1080?
I have a suggestion for your music list for speaker and AVR testing. Schwartz and Funk " Diamonds of Lounge ". Very dynamic tracks. To easily give speakers and AVR's a complete workout. Time to step up and add something new to your Playlist. Don't you have Tidal Premium? Give it a shot. When Christy polks her head out of her office to ask " what are you listening to "? You have a winner. Great for evening listening.
This sony also has a tendancy to get so hot you can fry eggs on it cranked up after 5 minutes i had to put a fan on it and that does actually preve.nt it from over heating and i had to give it all kinds of help with powered subwoofers and i miked the speakers into bass amplifiers then it's not too bad but it just sucks that the stereo alone without all of that extra help it sounds like a transister radio and you gotta turn it all the way up just to hear it
Sounds like my experience with the Onkyo rz50.
Thanks again for another great review and timely recommendation!.
is an1000 worth an upgrade over dn1080? or it is just 10% difference? i am using earc so i dont care about direct hdmi connection
I hope they'll arrive soon (and with a price not too different from what you have in the USA) in Europe and here in Italy...
Would you say Sonys 360 set up sounds better than Dirac. Trying to decide between Sony and Marantz Cinema 50
Andrew.
How is the DSEE? Is it better than other music enhancers from other brands? A video about this subject would be nice.
Thanks for watching!
Happy Sunday Andrew and Kristi. Funniest thing I was waiting for 11:00am EST for the video to drop. Last night we moved the clocks forward so with that being said, I will adjust my schedule to watch your videos until we readjust our clocks later this year. Have a wonderful Sunday all
Thanks for making us a part of your day, Brian!
The best feature on this receiver is that you can connect some wireless Sony subwoofers & rear speakers
I have two 1080's one 1070 and one 1100 es I love these Sony receiver's I guess ill be getting a new Sony🤯
Don't understand why Sony doesn't share the ES series down under.
For such a large company, why leave us out. 😢
Denon x1700h at $400 or Sony an1000 at $600 does the Sony sound $200 better? Greatly appreciate your input.

Sony/Klipsch/Sonos for 5.1.2 set up,
Which one would you recommend for the above chosen AVR?
i watched this video like 8 times before i made up my mind, I want to upgrade my receiver I have a denon entry level 5.2.2 i decided to buy this one for the key words you mentioned "sony's cinematic presence is undeniable", "sony's spatial mapping sauce", " sony's spatial mapping is a game changer",
Please tell me - do you know if I can use the USB on the front to power a fan to cool it if necessary? TKS
Unfortunately not available in my country. There will be TA-AN1000 available soon but it is like $200-$250 more expensive
I bought the Onkyo 7100. Should I have bought this instead?
Hey I’m thinking of upgrading to this and I also have a Denon but the 2600h. Is it really that much better from your experience? Thanks
I went with the Marantz, but only because of the look of the unit. I got it in silver and it looks beautiful.
Thanks it does look better too
I started my home theater journey with a true budget Sony receiver (sub $500) and eventually upgraded to a low-mid-tier Onkyo and couldn’t believe the difference in sound quality. Specs aside, there are real differences between receivers at different price points. Sometimes hard to grasp in product reviews
So I have a 12 year old Onkyo , should I stick with Onkyo?
How much did the mid tier Onkyo cost? Just curious what the price difference was. I have a Sony dh770 from 2017. A $300 receiver and will probably upgrade here within two years. I want to upgrade my tv first to a Sony 65 inch either the X90L or X93L this holiday season when the prices drop.
This was a long while back, but I’d say I went from a $300 Sony to a $600-700 Onkyo.
Would you choose this over the pioneer VSX-LX305 which can be found around $550 now
I just picked up a Sony strdh550 out of the trash and I like it a lot ! ! Mine looks the same as what you have. Front and back look the same as my stereo minus the eathernet connecton.
Its 2 00 watts of beautiful power
Thats the words I have been looking for (Dynamic Sound )
I bought my STR-DN1080 thru massdrop - years ago and it continues to rock - no issues (less than$300…)
It does the job every day
And my DN1000 did, the DN1020 I sourced for a friends’ setup (still rocking), DN1040 (another friend), DN1050 (still another friend - also still rocking)
I would jump on a 7000ES if I had the money - and would stay with my 1080 over the AN1000
I have driven a lot of crazy with my 1080 in a mid size room (Celestion AFP sats and a PSB sub that no one has ever seen…)
Our home Klipsch speakers (and others) can recreate the same sense of detail and spaciousness as the HT-A9 setup, yes.
@@andrewrobinsonreviews thanks, that is what I hoped you would say.
The sony str-az1000es is 100 dollars more, they have similar specs. Is there a real difference or should i save my money.
Str-dn1080 is built for 7.1 channel, while this an1000 you need to set for surround to reach the 7.1 channel if you dont you will just have 5.1 channel if have total of 8 speaker 2 wont work or maybe i miss something on the settings
I believe you are correct. I just set mine to 5.1 plus a subwoofer.
New Sony unit the first updated release in 5 years I was pumped to get it
Opened box it at nephews he's your classic audiophile been collecting equipment for 30 years
We hook up a pair of B&W DM604 S3 towers and they sound great...so lets see what they can do.
At level 5 on the volume control they started to come alive at level 6 we started laughing how good they sounded. Level 6.1 the receiver go into power protection mode and shuts down, he states its the chip protection kicking in leaving 40% of the power inaccessible. Rebooted a couple of time same result
This amp is not suitable for low impedance speakers as stated in the review.
@@andrewrobinsonreviews there rated at 8 ohms?
I’m currently using Harman kardon 370 AVR with B&W 603 speakers
Would this Amp be Ideal for upgrade or should I look at something else?
It's never to late to enjoy a good movie in Dolby Atmos. (Well maybe loud volume will be annoying after a while 😂)
The Sony A/V receiver comeback continues.

Any news on this? I am planning to buy this
Good morning. I bought the JBL Stage speakers. Will the Sony make them even brighter? Thank you.
It won't soften them.
THANKS ANDREW,KRISTI…here to support your channel …KEEPS seems to be working for you 🤗👍💚💚💚
Would this Sony receiver be enough to power the Polk R200’s along with a center channel and a pair of height speakers?
I might need this for my new setup. Any advice on seating distance for a 100" ?

@@KristiWright THANK YOU - you guys ROCK!
