BON DIA 📡🧡✨ This time I am presenting older records from Curaçao 🇨🇼 mainly between 70s-80s (a set from my previous radio show in 2021), and I’d like to dedicate this to my mentor, a Curaçaoan who has major influence on my Salsa trajectory. Most of the songs I play in this set are in Papiamentu, an official language spoken in Curaçao, Aruba and a few other Caribbean islands and the rhythms that I selected for this show mainly are the ones that can be considered as falling under the Salsa umbrella. As much as I would like to showcase more rhythms from the island with you or even have musicians to do interviews, I have limited time and not able to share all at once thoroughly but I’d certainly hope to do so in the future:) Thank you for being here! As a Curaçaoan woman I am extremely grateful for this playlist much about culture isn't popular or easy to find so I'm extremely grateful to have stumbled upon your video and honestly would love to get Curaçaoan sound with mentor to teach me more about my culture. I always love Spanish music but hearing the sounds of particular coming from the land of Curacao brings a extra sense of comfort warmth and joy to my heart to hear the sound for my people so thank you thank you thank you so much❤
Gia’s love for Latin music dates back to her childhood. She grew up dancing mambo and cha-cha-cha under the direction of her mother, a dance teacher who taught ballroom-style in Shanghai, Beijing, and Hong Kong. But it wasn’t until high school, when Gia found herself at a breakdancing party, that she heard her first salsa record. “My friends would go to these breakdancing battles in Hong Kong. It was all local kids and nobody spoke Spanish, but the DJ suddenly played ‘Que Se Sepa’ by Roberto Roena. The whole crowd started singing along ‘si si, si do re do si do do,’ and when the beat dropped everyone went crazy. I was like, ‘What is this? I need to know more about this music.’” For over ten years, Gia has been obsessively collecting and cataloging Latin music, taking multiple tours to the United States in search of rare records, many of which don’t exist online. But she’s after more than just a DJ career. “I didn’t start DJing because I wanted to be a DJ. I do it so that I can learn everything I can about the music. I don’t want to just be pressing play. I want to know all the salsa in the world.”
All it took was a few well placed thumbnails and now I'm obsessed with Salsa. I've been listening to every one of these while I work for the past week.
As a Curaçaoan, this makes me so happy! I love this so much. Hearing my native language on a video with over 1 million views is insane. That's 10x times more people than we have here on the island. Thank you for this! Danki.
Hi! One question, would you please tell me the meaning of the second song (Flor by the Tunnel Miners), please? I tried looking for the full lyrics but couldn't find anything. That song caught my attention because Flor is my nickname, so I was curious to know what the song said about it. I hope this doesn't bother you. Thank you! Your culture is lovely!
@@floren3576 the first part of the song goes something like this (freely translated): "Flower, it's already 7 o' clock. And you want to come out and show your value/beauty. Flower, how come now that the sun is out you wanna shine your colours? What does she wanna tell me? What happened today? What did I do to you? I can't understand. If I only knew what you want, I'd go get it done, I'd bring it right away. Flower, it's now noon. It's no time to answer now. Flower, the bright sun wants to give you it's warmth. Finally, I now understand what it is you're trying to say. But something like that would never happen again. (.................) Flower, from now on my appreciation will be only for your love. Flower, I'll won't ever leave you for the evil thorn". So basically, the singer is pleading for forgiveness from his love partner after having been unfaithful to her.
Gotta miss the good old days. A nice calm day at your apartment, a turntable, hundreds of vinyl records, awesome music from all around the world jazz, salsa, classical music. An amazing set by Gia Fu. I've always loved being introduced to new songs.

Wonderful selection! What an incredible language is Papiamento mixing Dutch Spanish Portuguese and African languages! Listening to Ferfelu, I can hear some reminds to Oscar D'Leon and his Dimension Latina, producing absolute hits in Venezuela and the whole Caribbean in the 70s.
Actually, when Oscar D'Leon went solo it was with the help and financial support of a local Curacaoan businessman, the late Angel Job. His son, Mocky Job, is still alive and owns a record store on the island called Tik Tak . Oscar D'Leon has performed many times on the island and always makes sure to mention and give thanks to Angel Job for having helped him start his solo career as an artist.
This brings back so many childhood memories for me growing up in Aruba, the sister island of Curaçao and Bonaire (the ABC islands). My mom use to listen to these songs all the time and teaching me to dance to them, such great times😌 Thanks Gia for presenting our music and language Papiamentu/o to the world🌎 Greetings from Aruba🇦🇼

I thought that in my 60 years, I knew salsa. Today you showed me just how much I really don't know. You're first record " Canto Co Amor" caught me by surprise because I recognize the song, but not like what you played. The Puerto Rican 🇵🇷 version was released in 1978 by "La Sonora Ponceña". Compare and contrast when you get a chance. The first song caught me, but the rest kept me. Thanks for sharing. I ❤ Salsa!!!
I did search for the Sonora Poncena song (Canto al Amor) and you were right! Afro-Cuban music was introduced in Curacao in the 1950's after some of the island's migrant workers returned from Cuba after having worked there on the sugar cane plantations. They brought much of the Cuban musical and dance culture to the island and even today that influence is very visible in Curacaoan culture, although many are no longer aware of the Cuban origin.
