  • This is one of the Serbian songs I like.
It was composed right after the end of WWI. Serbia was crucially damaged by the war. Many people lost their fathers and husbands. Many houses were destroyed and burnt.
Today Serbia became a very beautiful country.
I have also been to the other Balkan country like Bulgaria, Macedonia, Kosovo, Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina. All the counties are peaceful and beautiful, all the people are nice.
It is sad to think of the history of this region.
May the peace lasts here. May the people live in peace and happiness. May the people walk with smile and laughter.
    (Serbian)
    Tamo Daleko
    Tamo daleko, daleko od mora,
Tamo je selo moje, tamo je Srbija.
Tamo je selo moje, tamo je Srbija.
Tamo daleko gde cveta beli krin,
Tamo su živote dali zajedno otac i sin.
Tamo su živote dali zajedno otac i sin.
Tamo daleko, gde cveta limun žut,
Tamo je srpskoj vojsci jedini bio put.
Tamo je srpskoj vojsci jedini bio put.
Bez otadžbine, na Krfu živeh ja,
Ali sam uvek klic'o, Živela Srbija!
Ali sam uvek klic'o, Živela Srbija!
    (English Translation)
There, far away, far from the sea,
There is my village, there is Serbia.
There is my village, there is Serbia.
There, far away, where white lilies bloom,
There, together, father and son gave their lives.
There, together, father and son gave their lives.
There, far away, where the yellow lemon tree blooms,
There was to the Serbian Army the only open way.
There was to the Serbian Army the only open way.
Without my homeland, I lived on Corfu,
But I always cried out "long live Serbia!"
But I always cried out "long live Serbia!"

This version of the song is very tender and beautiful!!
I love this song. It is so emotional. And so sad. I admire Serbians, which suffered too much, but have not lost their soul.
I´m proud that I've learned partly serbian (it hasn't been so hard, because I´m Czech). It´s help me understand to my roots, my Slavic origin.

I have to correct you my friend, Kosovo is not a country, it's south Serbian province. The part of Republic of Serbia, with (the currently) Albanian majority. However, in Kosovo is located the largest part of Serbian cultural heritage such as hundreds of monasteries, churches and monuments..

Exactly, it has historically been a center for Serbian culture, history, and spirituality. I agree that the Albanians should be respected as inhabitants of the area, but their independence claim is just that they are a different ethnic group that moved into the area when it was under Ottoman occupation after driving the Serbs out.

Fortunately I had the opportunity to work in a project in Serbia for 6-7 years (and I'm expecting another opportunity in future) which made Serbia the second home for me. I cherish the culture, music and food (especially rakija of course) of Serbia. Good to see that the vaccination is rolling out finally, but it will take time to spread around the world to settle the situation. So please keep safe. Thanks for the comment!

Dear Masashi Yamanaka, thank You for Your wonderful interpretation of our old Serbian song.I learnt it, every single word of it, when I was 7 years old. I am proud of my Serbian origin and my great-grandfather who went to the World War the First, went from Serbia, through Albania, came to Corfu....That part of our history is only partly written in The Serbian Museum House in Corfu and the Mausoleum of Serbian Soldiers in Vido Island (near Corfu). Also, there is a cemetery of Serbian Soldiers in Thessaloniki, Greece, where they, some of them, were buried (most of them were just "thrown" , back to Corfu, in The Aegean Sea because, sadly, there was not enough place to bury so many brave Serbian soldiers)... the Soldiers who fought for our country, Serbia and against the enemy (I don't want to mention them). The victims were innumerable...very sad...Serbian people have suffered so much and have always, unfortunately, bear the most victims in every war! But, we still smile and we are the most hospitable nation in the world (I think so :) apart from Cuban people) :) ...and we believe in God! All the best from Serbia. :) This is the song we should be and are proud of! Thank You.

+Jelica Paskas Draga Jelica, thank you so much for sharing your beautiful thoughts with me. I've never been to Corfu, but that place has been on my wish list, since some of my Serbian friends told me of the meaning of that island for Serbia. And I've heard that it is also a very beautiful place. Many people chill out there. It is a bit strange to imagine that today it is one of the popular spot to spend your vacation, though it was a place of war several decades ago. I often visit Serbia, since I have one project there, and also in Bosnia and Montenegro. Before coming to Serbia, I learnt a lot about your history, the sad background of the Balkan peninsula. And now, I feel in the same way as yours. You have suffered a lot, and has had countless tragedies in the history. But you have SURVIVED and you even SMILE today. That's the thing. That's how and why I love Serbia. I also wish you the true peace and mutual respect is found in this region someday.
