Η Χαλκίδα είναι η πρωτεύουσα και κύριο λιμάνι της Περιφερειακής Ενότητας Ευβοίας, στην Περιφέρεια Στερεάς Ελλάδας.
Η πόλη της Χαλκίδας είναι χτισμένη και στις δύο πλευρές του πορθμού του Ευρίπου, όπου το ένα τμήμα καταλαμβάνει μέρος του νησιού της Εύβοιας και το άλλο είναι χτισμένο στη Στερεά Ελλάδα.
Στην ηπειρωτική πλευρά, στο λόφο της συνοικίας Κανήθου, βρίσκεται το οθωμανικό κάστρο του Καράμπαμπα, που μαζί με το γεφύρι του Ευρίππου και το μοναδικό φαινόμενο της αλλαγής κατεύθυνσης των νερών, αποτελούν τα σημαντικότερα χαρακτηριστικά της περιοχής.
Η πόλη της Χαλκίδας απέχει περίπου 80 χιλιόμετρα από την Αθήνα.
Το κάστρο βρίσκεται σε ένα λόφο στη βοιωτική ακτή, που ονομάζεται Φούρκα.
Η θέση του είναι στρατηγική, καθώς ελέγχει τα στενά του Ευρίπου και την πόλη της Χαλκίδας.
Η θέση του Κάστρου ταυτίζεται από ορισμένους μελετητές με την αρχαία πόλη της Κανήθου.
Το φρούριο που σώζεται σήμερα χτίστηκε από τους Τούρκους το 1684 από τον Βενετό Gerolimo Galopo.
Κατά την Ελληνική Επανάσταση οι Έλληνες δεν μπόρεσαν παρά τις αλλεπάλληλες προσπάθειες να καταλάβουν τη Χαλκίδα, παρέμεινε απόρθητη χάρη στα δύο κάστρα της: τον Καράμπαμπα και το δυνατότερο κάστρο της Χαλκίδας, απέναντι. (κατεδαφίστηκε το 1885)
Στην είσοδο του κάστρου βρίσκεται ο τάφος του ποιητή Γιάννη Σκαρίμπα.
Η παλίρροια του Ευρίπου είναι ένα σύνθετο μοναδικό φαινόμενο, λόγω παλιρροϊκών δυνάμεων που παρατηρείται μόνο στο στενό του Ευρίπου.
Στην περιοχή αυτή εμφανίζεται το φαινόμενο, τα νερά του καναλιού να κινούνται αδιάκοπα, ενώ ταυτόχρονα αλλάζουν κατεύθυνση κίνησής τους, κατευθυνόμενα άλλοτε προς τον Βόρειο και άλλοτε προς το Νότιο Ευβοϊκό. Η συστηματική παρακολούθηση του εν λόγω ρεύματος έδειξε ότι ενώ στις 22-23 ημέρες δείχνει μια κανονικότητα αλλαγής κατεύθυνσης κάθε 6 ώρες περίπου, όπως και η παλίρροια, τις υπόλοιπες 6-7 ημέρες του μήνα το ρεύμα γίνεται τόσο ακανόνιστο ότι μπορεί να αλλάξει κατεύθυνση ακόμα και 14 φορές το ίδιο 24ωρο.
Chalkida is the capital and main port of the Evia Regional Unit, in the Region of Central Greece.
The city of Chalkida is built on both sides of the Euripus strait, where one part occupies part of the island of Evia and the other is built in Central Greece.
On the mainland side, on the hill of the Kanithos district, is the Ottoman castle of Karabamba, which together with the bridge of Eurippus and the unique phenomenon of the change of direction of the waters, are the most important features of the area.
The city of Chalkida is about 80 kilometers from Athens.
The castle is located on a hill on the Boeotian coast, called Fourka.
Its position is strategic, as it controls the straits of Evripos and the city of Chalkida.
The location of the Castle is identified by some scholars with the ancient city of Kanithos.
The fortress that survives today was built by the Turks in 1684 by the Venetian Gerolimo Galopo.
During the Greek Revolution, the Greeks could not, despite repeated attempts, capture Chalkida, it remained impregnable thanks to its two castles: castle Karabamba and the stronger castle of Chalkida, opposite. (demolished in 1885)
At the entrance of the castle is the tomb of the poet Yiannis Scaribas.
The Strait of Evripos is a narrow strip of sea between Evia and Central Greece. It is actually a long ferry 39 meters wide, 40 meters long and 8.5 meters deep that connects the North to the South Euboean Gulf. The Euboean gulf, from the point of the Euripus strait, where the old bridge of Chalkida is, is divided into the Northern and Southern Euboean gulfs.
The Euripus Tide is a complex unique phenomenon, due to tidal forces that is only observed in the Euripus Strait.
In this area the phenomenon occurs, the waters of the channel moving continuously, while at the same time changing their direction of movement, sometimes heading towards the North and sometimes towards the South Euboea. The systematic monitoring of the current in question showed that while on the 22-23 days it shows a regularity of changing direction every 6 hours or so, just like the tide, on the remaining 6-7 days of the month the current becomes so irregular that it can change direction even 14 times in the same 24 hours.
