What an incredibly meaningful life. I grow most of our own food on a two acre permaculture food forest with a large tunnel and hugel beds and it’s pure joy, even with the failures. We always learn something. Any chance you might talk about doing what you do with children? My biggest struggle is finding the balance of life with littles when there’s so much to do. As a generational grower my family had the same gripes. My grandfather used to say that’s farming after a year of loss! You have the right attitude. We love you! He used to secure voles with a pitchfork I now know why.

I also like soups, we have it almost every day, especially in the cold season. So I get you, my body craves it if I don’t have it for a while. In Spain it is very common to drink broth in winter. I even had it in a bar, instead of coffee or tea ( I don’t drink either of the 2). So you are not weird at all about doing that. When I am sick, I drink a lot of chicken broth. I am sure it is some sort of medicine. Sorry for the sweet potato harvest. I am honestly not a fan of those. Have you considered growing squashes that are similar in texture to the sweet potato? I discovered Blue Hubbards this year and I like that they are similar to normal potatoes. And they keep for longer time! Sending you lots of love from Germany! Andra.

What we did {humming...} doodly-doo-dearie is prepare "Coated metal hardware cloth mesh" in the beds before planting. This should be constructed in a trench or bedding area sufficiently wide enough to house your crop to come. Build it from bottom, and sides up to the ground level. The coated "Cloth" should be small enough mesh to keep the varmints from getting to your root crops. We've done this with very large beds. We put down the mesh mostly at the perimeter in an L-shape, deep enough extending inward toward the growing area a little. Voles will try to dig into it, and try to find another path. But they don't dig down deep enough to circumvent the mesh obstruction. We were losing everything including root vege, and even greens, flowers, tender fruit tree roots, corn, potatoes, etc. until we did this. This wasn't our idea. It came from another YT channel. It's excellent advice!

Evidently sweet potato’s make good compost, my neighbor is bringing them in dump truck after dump truck load and loads of what look like wood chips. He has made many tons of compost over the summer. I am glad you are making money from youtube, but, I’d hate to be too dependent on them, they are very, let’s say, flimsy. Good luck and have a great day.

I'm going to dig mine today. It frosted after being 33 for two nights. You need a bobcat. They can hear the little devils, and will dig them out and eat them. That's what I did when I had my little farm. Don't do bombs, you might forget where one is, and you don't want to blow your hands off. 😮

Oh my. I feel your disappointment. I have had to deal with voles in past. They decimated a whole bed of beets and ate tons of beans. Last year my potatoes were attacked by grubs. They are hard to trap. You can but really a battle. They make these spikes that emit a sonic wave that they don't like.

Can’t stand lettuce, for salads I pick small turnip leaves, kinda peppery, dress it up any ol way, strong flavor but at least there is flavor. Got our first frost yesterday.

I wear sunglasses on sunny days, overcast days, rainy days, etc. Blue eyes are super sensitive, never understood how people can go without sunglasses. Curious how you can tell that it is voles and not gophers. I started using a gopher hawk trap system. Got 8 in the first 2 weeks. I don't love to use it, but for me, it is dangerous to walk around with the damage they are doing to the property. Sorry that you lost so much food. What a bummer.

Yeah! Make cheese. My other homesteader buds make it, but they never show it. There’s so much you can do with it. I don’t like turkey that much, but do love making pot pies and soup out of the bones and carcass afterwards. I high pressure cook it in my Insta-pot for 1 hr. All the meat and collagen comes off the bones and ribs. Get a large container of McCormick and Lawry’s chicken seasoning and some Better than Bullion. Soup is always yummy and comforting, especially when it gets chili out. 🤗 Plus, it looks like you cut up those puffball shrooms and processed them. - Without doing a VIDEO! 🤯How selfish of you. Shrooms add so much umami meat flavor to dishes.
This is so bizarre. I have never had problems with voles until this last couple of years. They are killing my trees. We’ve planted dozens of trees and the voles are going in and eating the roots. Killing my trees. It’s extremely difficult to put in hundreds of hours of work planting trees and shrubs. Then to have them killed by freaking voles! Btw, function is by far more important than super tidy in which you can’t find anything.
If I had to hate one of God's critters, it would be the Vole. On my little 1/4-acre lot in suburbia, I stopped counting after I caught 25 of them. I didn't even have a garden for them to munch on. They would just tunnel around and eat the roots of my grass. I have a shotgun if y'all need some help. 😳 lol.
You're letting the lettuce 🥬 get too big. Better to let it bolt, and pick dandelion greens...then you'll have plenty of lettuce seeds and you can stagger the planting so that there's always some young plants/leaves.

If you're a little short on salad leaves, you can use some young mustard leaves for a little spice. I've done it a million times.

You can try setting up a perimeter of mouse traps with peanut butter. Not sure why voles like peanuts, but it works.

Use along the rows Repellex mole \gogher repellent. It’s mostly castor oil.

For your summer lettuce, can you throw a shade cloth over them to help keep the bitterness out?
One thing on sweet potatoes before a frost you must cut the vines off of it can damage the potatoes.
