  • Currently, we are witnessing a high number of KDP accounts being terminated.
    And unfortunately, the initial email you get from KDP about a terminated account is typically pretty vague. There are many ways your KDP account could be at risk.
    In today's video, I'll discuss some of the main reasons why KDP accounts are being terminated recently. Including, how my kdp account got terminated.
    I'll even give you tips on how you can try and rectify things with KDP if you find that your KDP account gets terminated.

    My account was just terminated after 12 years. You can pretty much put me in the devastated column. It never occurred to me that Amazon would terminate my account and ban my books for sale on Amazon. And they stole the 2 months of royalties that they owe me for sales already shipped and on the account. I have always been able to work through issues in the past with their support but now it's just AI auto-generated responses. I'm sure that nobody is on the other end looking at my case. You used to be able to be able to talk to a real person if the problem was serious enough, but when every response is the same text, it's clear that it's just an automated response and they are intentionally making it impossible to talk to a real person. I responded that I recognize my mistake and would like to work with them, but after 12 years or so, they have just given my books the boot. I'm only hoping that there are some options for me to get the books back in print again by another POD company. I hope it doesn't cause me problems with other POD companies that Amazon has blacklisted my books. It's complete BS how a computer program can shut down a successful author with 5 books that each have over 100 - 5 star reviews. Basically I have to start my business over from scratch because of relying on Amazon KDP. I hope I can find a good option or even multiple options that can match the sales through Amazon.

      To your point about Amazon blacklisting your books... My KDP account was recently terminated and I had read that other platforms wouldn't publish any of my KDP books - I would only be allowed to publish new books. But the customer service people at Draft 2 Digital assured me that I would be able to publish any of the books from my terminated KDP account and they would distribute them to all of their multiple outlets - EXCEPT Amazon... Big props to the CS department at D2D - they are the polar opposite of the KDP CS department. They provide prompt, concise and clear answers to any questions you may have... and don't send you annoying computer-generated bullshit emails...

    My account was recently closed. I used all my images for my coloring books from canva pro and double checked to make sure they were free for commercial use with no attribution required. They still told me that I had a copyright infringement. I spent over 10 hours, trying to sift through every image and double check the license agreement. I also checked for trademark issues and couldn’t find any. I emailed back-and-forth with them for about a week and they would not be more specific on what the copyright was and I could never figure it out. The book that I had submitted was never published and they still deleted my account.
    I’m sad but diving into Barnes and Noble now. Hopefully I will get the hang of it quicker than it took me to become familiar with KDP. Thank you for this video and for all the tips and encouraging advice you offer your subscribers.

    It has just happened to me! I'm new on Amazon KDP.I've published my first 12 books and all of them were published successfully. I noticed that there was a couple of spelling mistake for some of the books and I've decided to EDIT book descriptions. First email I've received after this, my account got terminated. I'm still fighting with Amazon KDP and it's so frustrating to see how brutal they are. I'm reading the comments below this video and everyone is the same. I'll keep fighting for my rights because if something was wrong at first stage, why did they accept all of the books successfully. This's not my full time job but for many people, this is the main income and it's not nice what they're doing. I'll keep you updated under this video.

    Yep, Yep. I too am here because I got Terminated out of the blue. The line: "During a recent audit of your account, we found content and/or activities that are in violation of our Terms and Conditions. Therefore, we are closing your account effective immediately." I replied nicely and asked them to reconsider and for further clarification. They replied and said they're holding to their decision and I am still none the wiser. I have some low content, some medium and some full on non-fiction - over 220 in total. After four years of KDP it's a rather devastating blow. Not only that but I teach people how to self-publish books using Canva and Amazon KDP in live sessions for goodness sake. I said I need to know the exact offence, so I can teach other people the "right way" and that would make less work for them ;) Win/Win. Anyway, I am now effectively a "cautionary KDP tale"...Gutted.

    My KDP account got terminated out of the blue today!!! Oftentimes, it’s particularly frustrating because a book may be rejected with very little justification and a mere reference to the KDP guidelines. I write only Word Search Books and certainly there would be no logo violations or the like. This is what I wrote to them:
    “Please tell me exactly what you are accusing me of. I write Word Search Books. I wrote one about “Seinfeld” which you objected to. It was removed and I never tried to republish it. I also told you explicitly that I had written one about “Married with Children” as a tribute which was approved and I never received any comment or objections about it.
    I also wrote one about my university that I attended, but obviously it should be clear that I don’t own the university.
    I have used the occasional book title or movie title as clues in my Word Search Books, but only to make them more interesting. I certainly don’t see how that could be a violation.
    PLEASE RESTORE MY ACCOUNT!!! I DON’T THINK I DESERVE THIS!!!”
    If anyone has any ideas, please let me know. I never have made that much money anyways even though I have written more than 90 books. Maybe it’s a blessing in disguise. A lot of time and money spent advertising my books…
    I really think KDP sucks right now!!!

    It seems as if KDP is on a roll terminating accounts, targeting mostly low-content sellers AND Independent authors of romantic fiction. I just had my account terminated after 12 years. KDP now has the Big Five represented authors at pricing that KDP wanted, so the Indies who helped them build their e-book platforms are not valuable to big e-commerce.

    • @KeithWheelerBooks
      @KeithWheelerBooks  Месяц назад

      I strongly suggest you reach out and find out why you were terminated. The terminations are typically triggered by multiple algorithms Amazon has in place. Recently, many authors I know that have had their accounts terminated have been able to prove they were terminated in error and have got reinstated.
      Put simply:
      1. the terminations are triggered by an algorithm (or more than one)
      2. If you question it, a live agent will be assigned to look into it
      3. If you’re proven to have been wrongly terminated, they can reinstate you.
      While there are no guarantees, if you DON’T question it, you’ll definitely not be reinstated.
      I hope this helps!

I just published a photography book of my work on some trips I made, all the photos are mine, and the little text is has it was written by me too. The book is still published on Amazon though, so I think people can still buy it, but if my account is closed I don't think I'm getting any money from those sales. They said it was because they assumed that I have 2 accounts. But I didn't.
    After 7 emails and their templates answers I figured out because of twitter that it could be happened because my older brothers account was terminated a few months ago and a few times I logged in my account with his laptop and once he did the same with my laptop. I mean he logged in his account with my laptop. It was almost year ago.
    I explained everything I think could goes wrong. Send them my photo, photo with my passport, bank report to check my name on credit card that I paid for ADS. But after everything they sent me the same template answer. That I violated their Term and Condition rules and they won't open my account.
    What is wrong with them? I asked what documents they need to help them solve this problem but they didn't respond.
    I don't have any other account. I started publish my books since autumn of 2020. And now they banned me for their mistake!

    My account was permanently terminated this weekend for publishing "misleading content" which I absolutely did not do. I have been on KDP for quite a few years. I have tried emailing, begging, pleading, but every email I get says that I'm out for - LIFE? It's insane. The content review team takes no responsibility for what they have done. I didn't do anything wrong, and I am sick about it. This is what happened: Saturday morning I received an email saying that I had published misleading content and specifically a journal with my photography on it and a female name. I publish the same image with different names. I had never had a flag from them like this before (I have had flags, but not this specific issue/violation). I looked in my bookshelf and they had blocked this journal. I emailed back and said that I wasn't sure what the problem was. My book descriptions are specific and accurate. I received no response. I was really nervous, so sent them the originals of the photographs. Then at about 5 PM I got the dreaded your account is terminated email. I have appealed and begged, pleaded - the responses are all the same. The account is closed permanently. I was very upset over the weekend, physically sick over all the work I'd done and hours I put into it and missing out on the December selling season. I'm going to let it go for now, and try to approach it again with them in the future. They are not above making mistakes, but they treat us like criminals. Last year my account was terminated and my bookshelf cleared by them because they said I was not using my original photographs, which I was and could prove to them. I had my account reinstated but I had to manually go in and reload each book. They admitted the mistake. I don't know what happened this time, but I'm really sick of the way they run content review. It does not have to be this way. They could do a better job and they could provide more information to the content creator. Thanks for the video above. I have to be honest, I was polite in the beginning, but started to lose it when they refused to listen to me or give me the spefic reason why this occured.

      I’m so sorry this happened to you. I understand how frustrating it is especially when many times all you get in response are cookie cutter responses.
      I understand what they’re doing in trying to clean up the platform, but there needs to be more checks and balances before accounts get banned.
      Keep your head up and just continue to work on putting out better and better content every time you publish. That’s what I do and I find it helps me channel that frustration that I get when things like this occur.

      Lets face it anybody can create an awesome book now using AI. More and more people are going to publish books using AI. KDP is flooded with books & publishers now. Its gunna get worse & worse.
      By the end of next year its all gunna be turned upside down & they wont even need indie publishers any more so will be deleting accounts even more than they do now.
      The real issue then is competition. Also sales come from advertising full stop. I dont make much pocket change from organic KDP sales.
      So why send Social Media traffic to Amazon? Set up Shopify and sell your stuff on there. The only hassle then is customer support. But at least you will have a mailing list of customers.

I too faced the unfortunate situation of getting my account terminated last week and after writing an honest response to their email admitting possible mistakes and steps I have taken to prevent a recurrence, my account was reinstated.
    They sent me a follow-up generic email instructing me to unpublish all books that violate their guidelines. My account was recently closed. I'm creating low-content journals, notebooks etc. using my own illustrations and photography. I used a template from Canva. The template had a title '5 Minute Journaling'. I thought that because this was royalty free, there wouldn't be any issue. I changed the title anyway to 'My 5 Minute Journal'. Amazon blocked the two books I'd created with this title but didn't explain exactly why. I did what I should have done at the beginning and found that the title '5 Minute Journal' was trademarked in the US in 2015, but then abandoned early 2023. In the UK however it had been trademarked in the German language by the same person, as '5 Minuten Journal' which legally includes all translations. So that was mistake number 1. I emailed Amazon KDP twice and explained that I was happy to change the title, and asked if the blocked books could be removed from my bookshelf. They didn't respond to this. I thought that because the two blocked books were only in paperback, it would be okay to use the same listing to create a hardback version and in that process change the title. I think this triggered them to cancel my account. I've emailed to ask if they would consider reversing this decision, as I'm new to self-publishing, I'm very conscious of copyright and intellectual property, and made an honest mistake. In the meantime I've switched to Lulu which I have to say is easier to use and has a better integration with Canva. Most importantly I've learned an important lesson about trademarking.

    • @KeithWheelerBooks
      @KeithWheelerBooks  Год назад +1

      Yeah, Amazon does not play games when it comes to trademarks. Since the books are on their platform, they don’t want to be sued for trademark infringement, so when in doubt, they terminate the account.
      I wish you the best of luck in getting your account back, but based on my experience, I’d suggest looking at publishing on other platforms, instead waiting around for a response from kdp.
      I don’t say this to discourage you, but it’s better to start working on a plan B than just waiting around for KDP to get back to you. This way your business continues to move on.

So once that is done they are recognised. The duplicate content refers to coloring books with the same pages but different covers etc. Un-publishing mine is not an option as they make up 90% of sales and i have no worries about that (them deciding they don't like the categories i use is a bigger worry as they DID flag one.
      So I have gone through all books and removed any category i have a doubt about being apporpriate. If you're worried about your notebooks that is probably the main thing to check - or un-publish them if they no longer really sell many.

    I got my account terminated, because I used free images on the internet to illustrate. I would like to know what platforms could be alternatives, and If once KDP shutted down me, the same books I sold there that have no flaws, could be sold on other platforms without any problem. Would be great to share some platforms so more people that are in the same situation could benefit. P.s. I saw ingram spark charges $50 for a book to publish. Isn´t any option to get free or discounted price? if u publish 10 books is $500. crazy

    • @KeithWheelerBooks
      @KeithWheelerBooks  Год назад +1

      Yeah the danger with using free images is that everyone has access to them, which means, if you don’t modify the images, you have the risk of being banned for duplicate content.
      Since your account is banned, yes you can put your books on other platforms. That said, most platforms have similar rules to KDP, so you’ll want to modify your interiors so those images look unique.
      There are platforms that don’t charge to upload to them, like draft2digital, Barnes and Noble, etc but their distribution reach isn’t as far as IngramSpark. So, you save the upload fees, but less visibility means lower chances or sales.

    @KeithWheelerBooks - My account got terminated today out of the blue for "content being freely available on the web" My only hypothesis is that I have nonfiction titles, which technically has information that someone can obviously just "Google" online. However, my titles has its own commentary. An example is let's say I have a title about "Social Anxiety." Obviously a reader can just Google information about it online freely, but my titles have personal commentary about "Social Anxiety" e.g. my experiences with it or a suggested "5 -week plan" -- I'm pretty sure this does not violate any copyright at all, because ideas cannot be copyrighted, only the expression of ideas. So is Amazon KDP no longer allowing any titles at all that have any sort of "free" information available on the web?? How can a nonfiction title in other words not have content freely available on the web? Doesn't make sense to me

    • @KeithWheelerBooks
      @KeithWheelerBooks  10 месяцев назад +1

      You are correct that you can still create non-fiction books. From my experience, KDP usually sends this type of notice when the content within the book is actually word-for-word available on a website. Maybe not the entire book, but if huge parts/sections are basically plagiarized, that’s when they usually send this type of termination.
      Now I’m not saying that’s what you did, I’m just saying those are the only instances when I’ve seen them use this verbiage. If this is not the case with your book, hopefully they will reinstate your account.

    • @Feliyam
      @Feliyam 10 месяцев назад +1

      @@KeithWheelerBooks I am certain I did not plagiarize verbatim ("word for word") -- Perhaps some of the factual content might be the same, but I cited each of my sources in the Bibliography. If they don't allow this, then it was truly and honest mistake. Additionally, their bots originally flagged this title about a month ago for a completely unrelated issue (image rights), and I promptly provided it to them, to which they accepted and approved, so not sure why I get terminated for another issue. Do you know if there is any hope to reinstating an account for this type of violation? I wrote an appeal explaining my honest make and what actionable steps I will take in the future to prevent something like this from happening again. Thanks

So many people have channels and courses that teach that you can make a lot of money buy publishing books, “quick and easy.” So they think they can just throw up a bunch of garbage and see what sticks.
      I truly believe that most publishers (especially those who follow my channel) are trying to do everything right, unfortunately, some are trying to work the system which makes KDP have to come down hard, like a parent disciplining their child. There's legit reasons for suspensions but also allot of suspicious suspensions... Sometimes feels like Amazon mods are reacting emotionally instead of logically or are overwhelmed. I've seen a case where the account was suspended, and re-instated when the publisher course-corrected for some vague discrepancy but at the same time got suspended again when Amazon claimed he didn't answer back to their email... which he had... so he lost allot of money waiting for Amazon to look back at his past emails to then reinstate the account...

      To be clear, you cannot open another KDP account, as that goes against their ToS(terms of service). That said, that doesn’t mean you can’t continue to sell on Amazon. Depending on what type of content you create, you can start publishing on Draft2Digital(if you’re not doing books with color interiors). If you’re not publishing no content books, you can publish through Ingramspark. Regardless of what type of book your publishing, you can always go with Lulu. All three of these options allow you to publish on Amazon.

    My account got terminated yesterday. It started with amazon sending me an email that they've blocked one of my books because it causes a misleading customer experience.
    I woke up one morning, went to check one of the books I published to see how it was doing, BSR and the rest... and it turned out that I only saw the kindle version, the paperback version was saying out of stock. Abnormal for self published books.
    I checked my mailing inbox and saw an email from amazon saying that my book both the kindle and paperback version were blocked because it was causing a misleading customer experience.
    At that point, I was thankful to God that my book was just blocked no account termination. As I was still thinking of a reply to give them. Two hours later, I tried to load my dashboard but I saw "Your account have been closed". I checked my email again then I saw the dreadful message. For the first 30 mins I wasn't myself, I was so frustrated, my royalties I hoped on this month would disappear just like that, the time, energy, effort, hope, sleepless night spent all gone in the blink of an eye just for a little error (that's if I actually violated their regulations)
    After I got myself I started looking for solutions, that was when I came across this video. Thank you @keith for this helpful video guide. 🙏
    I have followed it, replied their email saying I believe it's an error. I explained why I believed that the title isn't misleading but I was still honest and explained to them that if it was an error then it wasn't intentional.
    Tried my best to be honest and professional as said in the video. This happened yesterday. I'm still waiting to see if I'll get a good response or any response at all.
    Because from the comments I'm seeing here they mostly don't reinstate accounts. Either don't give a response or they insist on it being closed.
    God help me
    But I have questions @Keith
    How long do they usually take to respond to emails like that?
    How long before they reinstate the account?
    What are the chances 50%, 70%, 5% or even 1%

    • @KeithWheelerBooks
      @KeithWheelerBooks  Год назад

      I’m so sorry for your experience and I do hope you get a positive resolution soon. Unfortunately, the time it takes fluctuates but usually no longer than a few days. As for the chances of reinstating, it really depends on whether or not you violated their terms. Intentional or not, if you did violate their terms, they most likely won’t reinstate you. (Just trying to be transparent and honest)
      It seems the days of lenient Amazon are long gone.
      Regardless, of the results, I suggest you get a plan on how to move on from there. What other platforms can you utilize, etc.
