Marcus Peters You are most likely right, I think the Toads in nintendo are definitely meant to be comedic relief and such, but illumination will definitely over do it to the point where it is just not funny.
Mario is the 40s Superman of video games. He doesn't need a personality other than simply being the hero that does good. This movie could be the occasion to have a Golden Age of Comics style of hero back in the spotlight for an hour and a half. Or it could be a child-pandering cashgrab like every one of Illumination's properties. I'm not taking the bets.
My dream story for the movie scenario would be have the boldness to have little to no talking involved - yeah that's an option too, hard to make but with enough talent anything can be done - the plot would start off as a classic Mario vs Bowser type of deal, but then someone else hijacks the plot and the two must then team up against this common enemy. They always had the most interesting dynamic out of all the Mario universe characters, so if you're gonna make a Mario movie, make it about that.
I don't think Illumination is creative enough to thoughrouly (how do you spell that word?) explore the concept of a mostly silent film, and even if they were, the widespread assumption that most viewers have the intelligence and attention span of a goldfish would prevent such a piece of art. Big studios (even the good ones) tend to try to reach for the biggest audience possible. And on top of this, Nintendo themselves uses very simple stories for Mario titles (with a few exceptions, of course), so I don't think they're particularly likely to push for an incredibly deep story.
"Illumination is pretty much the worst studio to get it done." Tell that to Sony But in all seriousness, im not worried at all, Nintendo is FAR too protective of Mario to let anyone screw it up, and the same Nintendolife report even notes their large creative control on the project. Illumination is just the animator in this situation. Sit back, relax, and let Nintendo do their thing.
John Man you mean the movie that stopped Nintendo from lending out their IPs to movie studios for thirty years?. Yeah, I think they've learned their lesson
Even though it won't happen, Pixar should handle this movie since they made Wall-e and Wall-e doesn't even talk the whole movie apart from 1 word sentences and beeps and it's a very highly acclaimed film. They have a lot of experience with minimal dialogue and visual storytelling Unfortunately this probably will never happen since it'll be an illumination cash grab
+Liam Curran Yeah, I don't care if it won't happen but I agree. They make really good animation and it's like you said. Wall-E in Wall-E didn't talk in the movie and it was a masterpiece. "Illumination cash grab" Just because of their other films does not mean that the Mario movie will be like the others. Movies depend on the director, not the brand.
Carlo Nassar Actually the company itself runs on a very cost effective model so even if they had a good director, you could probably expect very bland animation that cuts corners and a story that panders to the lowest common denominator since that's their business model.
+Liam Curran I really don't care if they run on an effective model, they can let Shigeru Miyamoto help. Either way, I agree. Pixar would do an awesome job.
Actually from what I heard universal also owns DreamWorks and the studio that did how to train your dragon they had a whole trilogy of toothless not talking so they could do it!
I think the portrayal of the Mushroom Kingdom in Mario Galaxy is one of, if not the, best. I think that area being the kingdom, with the area in front of peach's castle being the same as 64/odyssey, would be the best way to make it seem like a sprawling world.
Well, in _Mario Odyssey_, despite being "Mushroom Kingdom" under the kingdom list the area is technically labelled "Peach's Castle". So it's _just_ the castle area, as a tourist destination.
@@notausername226 that's such a stupid assumption to make just because it's illumination. If it was Disney making the movie would you say "expect Mickey Mouse"? If it was DreamWorks would you say "Expect Shrek"?
Watching a Mario movie, no matter how faithful to the source, would be like sitting through a 3D Mario cutscene compilation. And it's Universal... Mario is loved because of its immensely fun gameplay. Plot was never its strong suit nor its intention.
I would love if it was an adaptation of Mario & Luigi Superstar Saga. It has enough characters, different locations, and enough of a plot to be an interesting film.
That would honestly be the best story for them to do if they made one. It would be the most coherent storyline, but I might be biased because I love Superstar Saga lol
I hope the movie will be like the Nintendo Power Super Mario World Comic. It has the world, it has the characters, it has the comedy, it’s just a really fantastic take on the concept of Mario. This thing still holds up after all these years and Mario and Luigi talking isn’t even that weird, I know because there’s a fandub of this comic that’s also fantastic. The things they did with the Mario universe here are just great. The way Mario and Luigi defeat the Boos when they get stuck in a ghost house is so clever, I’m not even going to spoil it here. This is what a Mario movie should look like except it’s a comic. And Mario does have a personality, it’s actually been pretty consistent over the years, but you have to pay a lot of attention to more than one game in order to notice the consistencies. He’s a big eater who loves food of almost any kind(64, Sunshine, Superstar Saga), he‘s brave and wants to get the job done as opposed to Luigi who is easily scared and hesitant(Superstar Saga, Bowser’s Inside Story, Galaxy), but isn’t too proud to accept help when he got ahead of himself and/or is in trouble(Luigi‘s Mansion, 64DS, Galaxy, the Mario&Luigi games where the Bros often get each other out of trouble). He also has a spontaneous and mischievous side where he tricks others, but never for a malicious reason, it’s usually done for the greater good(Superstar Saga, Bowser’s Inside Story). For the most part, he is pretty honest though, occasionally even to the point of being naive(Super Mario RPG, TTYD, Sunshine, both sides are shown in Superstar Saga). He loves his brother and while he occasionally gets into small banters with him(Superstar Saga, Partners in Time, that sports game where he steps on Luigi’s foot which is always brought up in order to prove that Mario hates Luigi even though in another victory animation in the same game, he helps Luigi up after he was accidentally knocked over by Koopa, so that argument is invalid) respects and appreciates him greatly which is a thing that not everybody does(any of the Mario&Luigi games, Luigi’s Mansion Dark Moon). He even flat out lied to Starlow in BIS because he saw how much Luigi was hurt by her trash talking and gave his brother all the credit for defeating the Shroobs and saving the planet from their invasion. Mario never planned to overshadow him, it just kind of happened because Luigi isn’t as brave as he is, so everyone else holds him in higher regards even though this is not what he wants. In fact, while he is far from shy, he has been shown to be uncomfortable with too much attention(Superstar Saga, TTYD) with the latter even implying that the reason why Mario doesn’t talk much is because he is humble and doesn’t like taking credit for all his heroism despite his seemingly unconditional desire to help others(duh). The funny part is that this is also pretty much his personality in the comic despite it coming out way before any of these games though many different stories and situations obviously can establish more than one story can. I expect more out of this movie than I do out of the Sonic movie(which is made by the same guys who raped the Smurfs before, I simply can’t expect anything good to come out of this right away despite Sonic being a much better choice for a movie than Mario), but I do think there’s a lot they could screw up too. Though as long as they don’t make Mario a psychopath because „hurrdurr gay theory“, I‘ll probably be good.
The Shaun the Sheep movie didn't have anyone talking in the entire film. That film was still pretty enjoyable. Yeah, Illumination might not be the best choice for a Mario movie but it could always be worse. *cough* Sony *cough*
Maybe the movie could be about how the Mario Bros. started being, well, the Mario Bros.? Basically, how Mario and Luigi became the renowned heroes of the Mushroom Kingdom (more so for Mario since everyone forgets Luigi). Like, they're just simple plumbers at first, known only for that job, but Bowser's taken over the kingdom/the world and tops it off by kidnapping Peach, planning to use her as a sort of hostage or for some magic-related purpose (she's had a history of that in the RPGs). Seeing that everyone's just running from the all-powerful Bowser and his army and refusing to fight, even his bro, Mario (perhaps also motivated by personal interests in Peach) decides to take action and gets Luigi to join in, perhaps late in the movie to explain why people barely know Luigi as a hero. Their part of the story is the adventure that shows off the Mario world, the minor characters, and the bros we all love. Meanwhile, Bowser, at this time having no idea who Mario even is and treating him as an absolute non-threat since he's just a plumber, finds himself growing attached to Peach, as he's shown in the history of the games, and perhaps part of the movie is him dealing with that. Perhaps this love conflicts with his plans, forcing alterations later on. Maybe this conflicts with a minion's (maybe Kamek) ideas of what Bowser should be doing (similar to Gru and Dr. Nefario's conflict about Gru ceasing to commit crime) and tries to interfere. During this, Peach is trying to escape and discretely sending help to the random plumbers coming to save her and stop Bowser (a la Paper Mario).
Just make it Wall-E style but more vibrant, fast-paced, and self-aware Mario could have a personality similar to the new Mickey Mouse cartoons that Disney is doing: heroic, funny, and expressive through his face and actions.
Nick Baldwin: Oh no of course, that sounds like a real challenge so you definitely need the right competent people for directing and storytelling something like this :O
+Blocky Yoda I've got an idea. Mario: My body........is ready. (Quickly becomes more human (tall and muscular, his true body) and suddenly sprints at the same time)
In my opinion, Blue Sky would probably be a better choice to do the movie. Mario's character, could just be that everyday guy who just helps everyone who needs it, and he's just nice to everyone, and basically just being who people really want to be (kind of like Arnold from Hey Arnold). I can imagine Charles Martinet doing Mario and Luigi's voice in the movie. Kevin Michael Richardson, in my opinion, would be a perfect Bowser. The story, I don't think it should just be Peach is kidnapped, instead I would much rather see a bigger threat, even bigger and badder than Bowser. I can definitely see Fawful being the main villain, just because I kind of want to see him return, and the movie has a story that continues from the Mario and Luigi games, instead of the 3D Mario games, but the should be in that 3D-ish style (sort of like how Peanuts and Captain Underpants was), I think that would be a little bit better looking than just a long 3D Mario cutscene-like movie. I would like to see a different style of animation that is more fluid and cartoony, I guess.
This video summarizes my exact thoughts about the film. I think I should just say now though that there will most likely be a minion reference because it'll be by that company.
PaperPopper Unfortunately Illumination's logo Includes minions. That paired with the fact they show it at the start of all of their movies means that minions are inevitably appearing in the movie.
No, pixar would ruin it. We need a film company that is more open to ideas for a film, pixar is just too aimed towards kids. We need a movie from a different film company for a change instead of the same old ones with the same sort of feel with their movies.
Yes but the point is that i want a different film company with a different style. Why do you seem to only think about the big popular film companies as options. We don't have to always fucking watch a film made by those film companies.
How to make a Mario movie: -Make Mario a mostly silent protagonist, and have his personality be moreso based on his interactions with those around him. It would be tough to pull off, but it could work. -Luigi should have a speaking role just because he has a more defined personality and speaking roles. Make his personality more akin to the Luigi's Mansion games, with an arc based around him overcoming his fears and stepping out of the shadow of his brother. -Peach's personality should be more akin to her role in the first 3 Paper Mario games. -Have Bowser be a reluctant anti-hero like he is in the RPGs, with a personality akin to those as well (ESPECIALLY with the role and personality he had in Bowser's Inside Story and Super Paper Mario). -Borrow elements from a wide variety of Mario games. The story structure and stakes of the RPGs, the visual spectacle of Odyssey, etc. -Have the villain be someone new. Not exactly a psychopath like Fawful or Dimentio, but something new. Perhaps Bowser's mom is dissapointed in her son and decides to take over his kingdom and take control of his minions. Or maybe one of Bowser's minions goes rouge. Something other than a basic Bowser captures Peach issue.
Jack AWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW
Anyone else thinking of Wall-E? A movie without dialogue can be done, given the right script and direction. Mario and Luigi could have a sibling synergy, the one where they don't actually need to talk, and Luigi could be the sass and talkative of the two.
I dunno. Wall-E and EVE were designed in a way where they don't seem like they could talk at length; there was more emphasis on body language and other little subtleties, and that was part of the charm. The brothers Mario... there's this expectation that they could and probably should be able to hold a conversation for a reasonable amount of time. If we give Mario a side character (not Luigi) to do much of the talking for them, odds are it's a character that's going to have the actual character development. We've seen this before; take a movie like Flubber where the title character isn't the one getting any real character development or is given a driving force throughout the movie. He's more of a tool for Robin Williams's character who is the real protagonist. And putting aside how much you may like Robin Williams, most kids are really there to see the bouncing blobby green goo thing. See also every movie that involves a dog doing a vaguely significant thing.
Holy crap. I actually forgot about Wall-E. That means no dialogue Mario could work. But considering the animation studio could possibly be Illumination, I don't see it happening.
Yo PLEASE let's see Waluigi and Wario in this thing! Daisy, Rosalina, DK, BRING IT ON!! I reeeally hope this will spark something good in Nintendo's mind....*cough* Super Smash Bros Movie *cough* (the licencing on that would be hell though, I know..)
The only licensing problems really would be any crossover characters such as Sonic, Cloud, and Ryu, because if Nintendo wants one of their IPs, they can likely license nearly all of their IPs.
I dearly hope they take a page out of Mario & Luigi RPG's and Paper Mario, since they actually have great characters, humor and stories in general. A vanilla Mario movie doesn't sound appealing at all.
I feel the villain should either be Bowser, but doing something more than the cliche "kidnap the princess" plot, or an entirely new villain. I feel that using an older villain, while it would be some nice fanservice, might make for a lazy plot anyways unless done right.
NinjaMaster909 yee maybe like Bowser works with villas from the past.... liiike... uhm... maybe that crocodile from Mario Bros 2 (I think) oor... maaybe... idk, like an old or *new* enemy.... yea..... *Nintendo better see this comment*
They would be best off following one of the Alphadream games. Loads of dialogue, Mario and Luigi both take centre stage, lots of locations and good humour.
There's only one movie based on a Nintendo IP that I'm interested in, and it's metroid. A psychological thriller/ light horror Metroid movie with most of its story telling done through visuals and implications and not dialogue.
The type of humor they can made is Peach : mario has a heart bigger then him Luigi : correction princesse ! Nothing can be bigger then him ! Mario : *punch*
I think the Mario movie would be about how Mario became Mario. How he went from a plumber to protecting the princess. I expect it to stay in a pretty big Mushroom Kingdom, if there would be a sequel i'm guessing it would go to Isle delfino, if they decided to leave the Mushroom Kingdom. My two cents.
But the shows always depicted Mario with a low, semi-raspy voice. Can you imagine the Charles Martinet voice from the games talking constantly for an hour and a half or more?
I would love if the movie was based off of the M&L RPG series. The games have amazing narratives and humor, and a story in that style would fit perfectly into a film adaptation.
Is no one else worried that they are planning on letting freaking Illumination do the movie? the guys behind tepid garbage that relies of shitty low-brow toilet humor, terrible character design, atrocious VA casting and just laziness in general? The guys that made Minions? Stupid generic-pets movie whose name i can't remember? Despicable cash grab? etc? These guys are barely above Sony animation in terms of quality, and well below Dreamworks, which is not exactly stellar either. If they are going to allow these garbage people to make the movie, i'd rather not get a movie at all.
I still don't see the upside, Illumination is not known for it's quality animation, it's half decent at best. Like Arlo said, it's a company that actually takes pride in being as cheap as possible, in no universe is this a good thing for the consumer. They care about turning up a profit, not making a quality product. These are not mutually exclusive, but Illumination clearly only cares about one of them. Besides, Nintendo is fantastic at making games, but movies are an entirely different beast. I don't think it's a good idea to let them handle everything regarding creativity, hopefully they'll bring people that are savvy in the medium in order to provide a quality product and finally five justice to Mario on the silver screen, should they ever make the movie.
+Jack Garcia I'm not worried because movies depend on the director more than the brand. I would be angry if the director made it low-budget. Having Miyamoto co-direct or direct the movie would help.
Illumination is just only ANIMATING it. It's not like they're gonna do something big to the movie other than that. Plus, it's co-produced by Miyamoto himself and another dude. If this movie fails, then it's most likely because of the plot from the directors. Stop overreacting just because it's Illumination. No one cares.
I dont think hes gonna talk since its being made by illumination, who made the minions movie, and the protagonists spoke gibberish, so they could make mario say a couple phrases here and there, but nothing too big
I don't want Mario to talk but I hope it isn't like the Minions Movie which was one of the worst movies I've ever seen it made Color Splash's humor look excellent.
The Shaun the sheep movie is a great example of actions speak louder than words. There is NO talking at ALL in that movie. Mario could adapt the same style
I always heard big N's requirement for bowser was that he held his cup differently. Incidentally, the development of Wreck-it Ralph was super strange in that they were animating it while still in talks with the game companies, so they had super transparent stand-ins early on. Like, this is clearly a pac-man ghost, but we're still talking with Namco, so it's not really one yet. There is one thing that gives me some hope about how crazy they might be willing to go. When they did that amiibo/skylanders crossover they game the skylanders guys quite a bit of freedom. When the skylanders guys had Giga Bowser as one of Bowser's moves, Nintendo encouraged them to branch out a bit, and we ended up with Magma Bowser instead.
The fact that the Mario universe has expanded enough to make an actual movie out of compared to before is 101% true! You’ve got enough races and kingdoms to pull off a big Game of Thrones-esq epic. Bring in everything! Mushroom Kingdom, Koopa Kingdom, Comet Observatory, Yoshi’s Island, DK Isle, Diamond City, scrape the bottom of the barrel!
YES, yes he is. He is so full of joy and life and always tries to cheer people up. Also, he's so happy with his job and that he lends Mario and co. his voice.
*Some thought in 2024 after the movie both existing and being released* 4:02 The solution to the Mario voice problem was simple - he just talked with a normal voice. This seemed super controversial, but it ended up working just fine. 8:00 The story was your basic Mario story, but with the added origins of the Mario Brothers, which hasn't really been mentioned since the early 90's. But it was enough to give us a pretty decent story. 8:30 The characters was the your usual Mairo stuff like Toads, Goombas, Koopas etc. It did include new variants of Mario characters though, like the Blue Koopa being having a chef status in Bowser's minions. The game did also include both the entire DK world and Mario's family - which both worked wonder! 9:29 Illumination was a critical choice as mentioned in the video, but thanks to Nintendo's directions, it went well. Of course, other studios would have been better, but they did well enough and their animaiton style worked perfectly with Mario. 10:31 Nintendo was heavily involved, for better and worse. But I'm happy that they went hard and didn't try to go a more cheap, safe route to success (which the movie became, of course). 13:34 It wasn't written as Paper Mario, and thatä's honestly not really a good thing... 14:06 It wasn't creative, but it was a lot more than just "vanilla Mario". 15:21 We got DK, the Mario family and even Foreman Spike from Wrecking Crew! And I think this is works well enough. 16:39 Sorry Arlo, but this did actually happen. But again, it was mostly to show off the Mario Brothers origins, which worked well! However, it did have some license music tracks, which didn't work as well... 18:03 No memes or weird in real life stuff did happen, thankfully... 18:49 Agreed. This was a huge move, but I also think this is a big reason for the movie's success. Who DOESN'T want to see a real Mario Movie on the big screen for the first time for real?!? 19:28 Wild to see none of those movies released except for Mario and Despicable Me 4, which is releasing this summer... 19:52 Oh my god he predicted the future... As for the Arlo Direct. Dope for those interested, but conventions isn't really for me. Excellent video that has aged surprisingly well actually...
"Maybe the mario movie will break the video game movie curse!" Mario movie sucks "Maybe the Zelda movie will break the video game curse!" Zelda movie sucks "Maybe the Donkey Kong movie will break-" Let me stop ya right there. No it won't.
Imagine a Disney Mario movie It would be a dream come true! The visuals would be a perfect fit and they could do something very different for the story.
i think illumination might just be the perfect animation studio for a mario movie. They are very good at communicating ideas without dialog. Which is the main concern you expressed here.
I think that if they took ideas from Paper Mario TTYD, Super Paper Mario, and Super Mario Sunshine in terms of plot would be a good idea. The idea of having a separate villain that kidnaps Peach or an anti-Mario that causes trouble for the real Mario would be cool. It could be Shadow Mario/Browser Jr. or Wario or maybe a new character. It wouldn't even be that hard to say that Kamek used his magic to do . . . something that puts a spin on the normal Bowser steals Peach, Mario saves the day, eat cake story. Any thoughts?
You're making a very valid point on the talking here, it would probably just be plain weird to suddenly have Mario conversing and monologuing all over the place. The best solution to this problem I could possibly figure is going in the same direction as Pixar with Wall-E - mostly relying on non-verbal communication, sound and facial clues, maybe backed up by a good solid choice of key phrases. It worked out very well for Wall-E, so why not for Mario? If I remember correctly Nintendo already did something like that for Super Smash Bros Brawl and it didn't end up being cringy or weird, it went pretty naturally with the flow of the story.
@@CarloNassar nah 2 years later, they are probably half way done with the animatic phase and are preparing to animate the movie lol. Honestly I'm not worried at all about it being bad or whatever since Nintendo owns this movie and they wouldn't make THEIR movie trash

The Sean the Sheep movie had no talking and it was still pretty engaging.
Pretty much, yeah.
*J U S T M O N I K A*
Let's talk about the Arlo movie.
A crossover with the Muppets perhaps?
with a Sesame Street Crossover teaser at the end?
Lucas okay. I literally wrote almost the same comment btw haha. See we all won't an Arlo movie
Lucas it needs to happen
Lucas PLEASE!!!!
We have big plans for the Arlo Cinematic Universe.
If Shiggy is involved with the movie, I bet it'll have motion controls.
Well they aren't bad for some games
I’m not watching this movie unless it has Motion Controls,

"Illumination is pretty much the worst studio to get it done." Tell that to Sony
But in all seriousness, im not worried at all, Nintendo is FAR too protective of Mario to let anyone screw it up, and the same Nintendolife report even notes their large creative control on the project. Illumination is just the animator in this situation. Sit back, relax, and let Nintendo do their thing.
Calm_Hawk noob Sony is far better ,they made hotel transylvania and Good movies illumination did nothing good
Calm_Hawk noob really? Have you watched minions or despicable me?
Yeah man Nintendo will never let anything ad happen to mario *FLASHBACKS TO THE MARIO 90S MOVIE*
SteveTube yes I have, actually. My point still stands.
John Man you mean the movie that stopped Nintendo from lending out their IPs to movie studios for thirty years?. Yeah, I think they've learned their lesson
"No memes in my Mario Movie!"
-Arlo 2017
We don't have a trailer and it's already a meme.
How the fuck did this comment age so damn well lmfao
And then the Mario movie became a meme
The first trailer and the Peaches song became memes 🤣🤣🤣
Even though it won't happen, Pixar should handle this movie since they made Wall-e and Wall-e doesn't even talk the whole movie apart from 1 word sentences and beeps and it's a very highly acclaimed film. They have a lot of experience with minimal dialogue and visual storytelling
Unfortunately this probably will never happen since it'll be an illumination cash grab
+Liam Curran
Yeah, I don't care if it won't happen but I agree. They make really good animation and it's like you said. Wall-E in Wall-E didn't talk in the movie and it was a masterpiece.
"Illumination cash grab"
Just because of their other films does not mean that the Mario movie will be like the others. Movies depend on the director, not the brand.
Carlo Nassar Actually the company itself runs on a very cost effective model so even if they had a good director, you could probably expect very bland animation that cuts corners and a story that panders to the lowest common denominator since that's their business model.
+Liam Curran
I really don't care if they run on an effective model, they can let Shigeru Miyamoto help. Either way, I agree. Pixar would do an awesome job.
Pixar won’t want to do it. They only want to make original movies
Actually from what I heard universal also owns DreamWorks and the studio that did how to train your dragon they had a whole trilogy of toothless not talking so they could do it!
Maybe a wall-e Art of movie. He didnt talk too much in that movie but it still was AMAZING
I just wish that Pixar was working on the movie so badly
I think the portrayal of the Mushroom Kingdom in Mario Galaxy is one of, if not the, best. I think that area being the kingdom, with the area in front of peach's castle being the same as 64/odyssey, would be the best way to make it seem like a sprawling world.
The Turtle King I always wondered where the city went in super Mario odyssey since it was in galaxy
Well, in _Mario Odyssey_, despite being "Mushroom Kingdom" under the kingdom list the area is technically labelled "Peach's Castle". So it's _just_ the castle area, as a tourist destination.
If Illumination really makes this movie prepare for Luigi Dabbing becoming a real thing
Already did in Mario+Rabbids :v
SoulTheRed - But once they put it in a movie, THAT'S when it becomes completely official!
And minions, expect minions.

Yeah, because they’re going to cut out so much that we will see the bits between the battles!
サパリーヤスシャント To be fair though, the RPGs have great stories
サパリーヤスシャント
The movie still needs a really good plot.
But plot being a key focus in Mario Games are also really good. Paper Mario, Mario and Luigi, even the Mario RPG was pretty good.

I agree.
18:37 “NO MEMES”
inb4 first line of the movie is “Nice of the princess to invite us over to the castle, eh Luigi?”
Instead, the first trailer and the Peaches song became memes 🤣🤣🤣
I agree with Arlo, the Mario movie should have no memes. However! For the Sonic movie, I want all the memes.
Brettsky128 gotta go fast???
If Sanic T-shirts are a thing in Forces, there better be a bunch of memes in the Sonic Movie.
No. Please stop it. I know you want Sonic to be just a joke but many fans would rather have an epic story line with no memes involved either.
+BlueCorp I'm a huge Sonic fan, I would love both an amazing story and some memes. Sonic has been sorta self-aware like that since SA2.

I would love if it was an adaptation of Mario & Luigi Superstar Saga. It has enough characters, different locations, and enough of a plot to be an interesting film.

Yeah, I know, I was just saying what I think an interesting IDEA for a Mario film would be.

Illumination Mario movie looks amazing rn

You have so much respect from me right now.

Madman Mammoth so Bowser could be like Gru who loves his gorls
And maybe they could have a little mario kart segment in the middle of the movie
Just make it Wall-E style but more vibrant, fast-paced, and self-aware
Mario could have a personality similar to the new Mickey Mouse cartoons that Disney is doing: heroic, funny, and expressive through his face and actions.
ZedK49 illumination isn't capable of those requests. They are too dumb/lazy to have a movie be "self aware"
I would be up for that!

They need to work that into the script somehow. It would be glorious

+Blocky Yoda
I've got an idea.
I can no longer unhear Bowser with Captain Gantu's voice
Wow, you predicted Richardson being in this movie
except he's Kamek but still

Nintendo wouldn't allow that! There was no minion references in Sing (or whatever that shit was called) either.

+scorepit
That was WAY too rude. I do NOT. I think of a company that cares a lot for the franchise and isn't Pixar.
"No pandering"
Dude, asking that of Illumination is like telling Micheal Bay to not add an explosion in his movie.
How to make a Mario movie:
-Make Mario a mostly silent protagonist, and have his personality be moreso based on his interactions with those around him.

Anyone else thinking of Wall-E? A movie without dialogue can be done, given the right script and direction.
Mario and Luigi could have a sibling synergy, the one where they don't actually need to talk, and Luigi could be the sass and talkative of the two.
Daniel Barrios I mega hope that will happen. Just the perfect quiet. All around...except Bowser and Peach, they can talk.
Shaun the Sheep the Movie would like a word... or lack thereof.
Daniel Barrios
Actually, it wouldn't be bad for both of them to talk.

The only licensing problems really would be any crossover characters such as Sonic, Cloud, and Ryu, because if Nintendo wants one of their IPs, they can likely license nearly all of their IPs.

Illumination isn’t the worst animation studio ever. Sony took that honor when they brought us the Emoji movie.

CubingIsFun Despicable Me 1 wasnt a bad movie though
Sing is the best Illumination movie story-wise.
I dearly hope they take a page out of Mario & Luigi RPG's and Paper Mario, since they actually have great characters, humor and stories in general.
A vanilla Mario movie doesn't sound appealing at all.
They should make Fawful one of the villains.
Fawful already died :I (Bowser's Inside Story)
He did? I played that game, and I didn't remember that. Oh well... :(
I feel the villain should either be Bowser, but doing something more than the cliche "kidnap the princess" plot, or an entirely new villain. I feel that using an older villain, while it would be some nice fanservice, might make for a lazy plot anyways unless done right.

or even Ethan Bradberry's idea. Fawful comes back from le dead and becomes Bowser's henchman who backstabs him near the middle or something....
They would be best off following one of the Alphadream games. Loads of dialogue, Mario and Luigi both take centre stage, lots of locations and good humour.
Those games are extremely wacky, and filled with loads of personality as well.
There is a load of potential.
Plus, Mario and Luigi is canon in the main series.
Really? I had no idea they were Canon, thought they were in their own timeline?
I'd say they aren't canon.
However I believed they were canon up until odyssey when the mushroom kingdom was shown to have no borders.
Eh... I think it could be canon still, mainly cause the Mushroom Kingdom always changes! You never know its layout.
There's only one movie based on a Nintendo IP that I'm interested in, and it's metroid. A psychological thriller/ light horror Metroid movie with most of its story telling done through visuals and implications and not dialogue.
White Sand Cosmos There is already one, it was called Alien
White Sand Cosmos YEAH METROID MOVIE!!
I would like a Arms or zelda movie
Yeah although I love Mario Games it doesn't seem good or interesting in a movie.. but Metroid seems like a good idea!
Benji I could see it working if its a comedy movie or have the story of Super Mario Galaxy, but more indepth.
Zelda could be interesting.
The type of humor they can made is
Peach : mario has a heart bigger then him
Luigi : correction princesse !
Red [EZ] interesting idea!
Then in the third movie they either go to space or the kingdoms from odyssey
That would make the movie similar to the Mario comics that featured in the Nintendo Power Magazines. You know, ‘Super Mario Adventures’?
But the anime one did that
Red [EZ] neat idea. That honestly seems like a story Nintendo would want for the Mario movie.
Mario talked in the TV shows and I didn’t think it felt weird.
AquaDayton // Dayton Young
It wasn't weird at all. I agree.
AquaDayton // Dayton Young i think you're forgetting it was the mario tv show. The voices were the most normal element of the entire show
But the shows always depicted Mario with a low, semi-raspy voice. Can you imagine the Charles Martinet voice from the games talking constantly for an hour and a half or more?
+josiah jenks
I'm imagining it. It would be normal. Not bad at all.
He voiced Paarthurnax so that's actually pretty easy to imagine.
I think Arlo might have predicted Chris Pratt as Mario at 19:51
This'll be fairly interesting
I would love if the movie was based off of the M&L RPG series. The games have amazing narratives and humor, and a story in that style would fit perfectly into a film adaptation.
When i remember its like theres was going to be a new mario movie for all my life but now we finally can look a little bit
What worries me the most is that one of the worst animating-companys is animating the Mario movie...
WHAT IF THEY CHANGED THE DEAL AND GAVE IT TO PIXAR!!! *GASP* no that won't happen
I’m probably the only person on the planet who just wants to hear Mario talk. Even in the games. I hate mute protagonists
19:53 How did you know!?
Is no one else worried that they are planning on letting freaking Illumination do the movie? the guys behind tepid garbage that relies of shitty low-brow toilet humor, terrible character design, atrocious VA casting and just laziness in general?
The guys that made Minions? Stupid generic-pets movie whose name i can't remember? Despicable cash grab? etc?
These guys are barely above Sony animation in terms of quality, and well below Dreamworks, which is not exactly stellar either.
If they are going to allow these garbage people to make the movie, i'd rather not get a movie at all.
Jack Garcia I think having Illumination is GOOD here, because they are only animating it. Nintendo will big/full control of everything else.
Jack Garcia I’m scared.
+Jack Garcia
I'm not worried because movies depend on the director more than the brand.
I almost want them to have the DIC voices.
*MAMA? MAMA LUIGI?! AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA*
Just hire Vinny to do the voices
Dear god no! Martinet does the best mario!

Why want DiC when you can have much better options? Though that is a good thought. Mario and Bowser didn't sound that bad.
I love those voices so much tbh. Idk, mainly has to do with nostalgia but I still think that they're still pretty good voices for them.
I'm going to watch it tomorrow...can't believe this video was made 5 years ago.
I dont think hes gonna talk since its being made by illumination, who made the minions movie, and the protagonists spoke gibberish, so they could make mario say a couple phrases here and there, but nothing too big
BING BING WAHOO 1-UP
I don't want Mario to talk but I hope it isn't like the Minions Movie which was one of the worst movies I've ever seen it made Color Splash's humor look excellent.
VGDT I kind of hope Mario and everyone talks like they did in the old Mario cartoons. (Ok, maybe not Bowser, but it's an iffy).
Some Guy Color Splash's humor was funny as hell
In the end Mario will have to say "Thank You for watching my movie."
My theory is that the movie will be canceled during production and it will never see the light of day.
Another Emma! I don't want that to happen!
I'm calling it that you're is calling it.
Teal Appeal There's gonna be a slightly large Mario cameo in Wreck-It Ralph 2.
Rip Popeye moviw
Or it may just never happen
19:53 how did he-
"I don't wanna see New York..."
What about New Donk?
The Shaun the sheep movie is a great example of actions speak louder than words. There is NO talking at ALL in that movie. Mario could adapt the same style
Surfer Sid
Agreed.
Look to Shaun the Sheep the movie, There is absolutely no dialogue and manages to work as a comedy.
Jude Walkergleeson that was a fantastic movie
That movie was Hilarious
Jude Walkergleeson
Good idea!
Good point! That might not translate to Mario as well however. I guess we'll just have to see!
BazookaAlfonso i was thinking that too
The fact that the Mario universe has expanded enough to make an actual movie out of compared to before is 101% true!
WAIT NO WAY! I WATCH YOUR VIDEOS AND YOU LIVE IN THE SAME CITY AS ME
I don't know about Mario, but Charles Martinet is the most cheerful, optimistic man alive.
YES, yes he is. He is so full of joy and life and always tries to cheer people up. Also, he's so happy with his job and that he lends Mario and co. his voice.
At the end of the movie Mario should say "thank you for watching my movie"
6 years later, its the best Illumination movie, and this and Migration have put some respect on their name. Im actually excited for DM4.
I just hope that Nintendo will be breathing down Illumination's neck so they make sure they don't screw this up.
Chris Pratt as Mario
"No Memes" great rule, I would have no celebrity voice actor for Mario, Charles Martinet only
Coming back here after watching the trailer.
It's bonkers how long I knew about the Mario movie before even seeing anything about it
*Some thought in 2024 after the movie both existing and being released*
4:02 The solution to the Mario voice problem was simple - he just talked with a normal voice.
"Maybe the mario movie will break the video game movie curse!"
Mario movie sucks
"Maybe the Zelda movie will break the video game curse!"
Zelda movie sucks
"Maybe the Donkey Kong movie will break-"
Let me stop ya right there. No it won't.
Wesley Tomsky
The Kirby movie will break the curse because its Second Party.
Wesley Tomsky
Also because everyone loves Kirby.
Kirby is best series. Anyone who disagrees will find themselves in his stomach.
SwitchNinja2 I only got to watch a few broken up episodes, so Im not sure about the Kirby show.
There is no curse
Imagine a Disney Mario movie It would be a dream come true! The visuals would be a perfect fit and they could do something very different for the story.
i think illumination might just be the perfect animation studio for a mario movie. They are very good at communicating ideas without dialog. Which is the main concern you expressed here.
We need a Paper Mario Movie
I'm fine with Mario and Luigi talking as much as the other characters, as long as they're still voiced by Charles Martinet
Best I can do is Chris Pratt and Charlie Day.
This being in my reccomended the day the Super Mario Brothers movie is releasing from Illumination is insane.
If Mario makes a fart joke in the movie I will die
Rebecca Robson, I don't know.
If anyone's gonna be making a fart joke in a Mario movie, it should be Wario.
Or does a dab
I think that if they took ideas from Paper Mario TTYD, Super Paper Mario, and Super Mario Sunshine in terms of plot would be a good idea. The idea of having a separate villain that kidnaps Peach or an anti-Mario that causes trouble for the real Mario would be cool. It could be Shadow Mario/Browser Jr. or Wario or maybe a new character. It wouldn't even be that hard to say that Kamek used his magic to do . . . something that puts a spin on the normal Bowser steals Peach, Mario saves the day, eat cake story. Any thoughts?
I think Bowser as an ally would be fun.
Pls for the love of God don't let illumination Studios get there hands on this great franchises
Pell the indestructible
I agree. A JP animation company.
Too late but Nintendo is taking complete creative control of everything (including the script I think)
@popkornkid Let’s hope so.
popkornkid
It's not too late if Nintendo refuses.
@@CarloNassar nah 2 years later, they are probably half way done with the animatic phase and are preparing to animate the movie lol. Honestly I'm not worried at all about it being bad or whatever since Nintendo owns this movie and they wouldn't make THEIR movie trash
