- Learning a language on your own can feel like a rollercoaster of progress and setbacks. Without guidance, it's easy to get caught up in grammar and structure, without nurturing the confidence to actually speak the language. Sound familiar?
My student Carl could certainly relate. He started learning German later in life and felt quite stuck trying to study on his own. But after a few months of consistent work, he was able to take his skills to the next level. When we met in August during his trip to Germany, I was thrilled to see how much he’d grown. Carl was confidently navigating conversations with locals, even impressing his tour group!
Watching his progress has been inspiring, and it’s a great reminder that with the right approach, it’s never too late to master a new language. I hope his journey motivates you to keep going, too!

I had a similar situation with my mom. She didn’t speak any German with us kids. I guess growing up after WWII, she just wanted to forget the past.
Thank you for sharing that. It's touching to hear how personal experiences and history shape the choices parents make for their families. ❤
I identify with a lot of these struggles.
Thank you for sharing.
