Day 51 of asking Rogurt to play Cry of Fear Yakuza 0 spoilers ahead! So recently, I've been replaying Yakuza 0 and it's only now I realize just how much Kuze's back tattoo foreshadows his role in the story, with the Yama on his back representing the Judge and Ruler of hell. In this game, Kiryu has just recently joined the Yakuza, doing minor tasks such as collecting debts due to his strong physique. After he is framed for a murder by an unknown party however, the lieutenant of the Dojima Family which is the yakuza family he's in, Daisaku Kuze, decides it'd be best for Kiryu to take responsibility either way and tells him to give himself up to the police. But Kiryu refuses that and instead tries to fight his way back into the Yakuza, or at least to straighten everything out so he can eventually re-enter the Dojima family alongside his brother, Nishiki, and his father figure, Kazama. As a result, Kiryu continuously fight Kuze who in this instance represents the demons of hell on his left and right arm, in order to get back to where he belongs and to back up Kazama in the Yakuza world (Hell). Fitting too that the first four fights plays the theme "Pledge of Demon", filled with intense rock music that antagonizes Kiryu and the player. But once Kuze fully recognizes the extent of Kiryu's will as a true yakuza rather than some a two-bit gangster in the fourth fight, he instead faces down Kiryu as the Judge of Hell, or the Yakuza, in the fifth fight, where the theme "Oath of Enma" plays instead, where the overpowering drums are instead replaced with string instruments and piano. Even Kuze's final words to Kiryu after their final fight were, "You best know this much, Kiryu... You're about to step into the deepest, darkest, pit of the yakuza world. Kazama kept you from walking that path for a long time. But if that's gonna be your choice... then go!" TL;DR I really like the symbolism of the back tattoos in Yakuza games.
