    Your explanation was perfect. Just today I had a crash on my machine right after sending a job to my machine, I couldn't understand why!.

    Thanks for taking the time to post this. It is exactly what I have been looking for to explain UGS. I broke my limit switch the first time I homed the machine. I got another one and have yet to install it.

      +YourHEARTisaPortal I believe that "break Z limit switch" is one of the most popular activities for anyone setting up an XCarve :-).

    This could have saved me a lot of aggravation ruing work piece after work piece dragging my tool across my part. I am in the process of building my 3rd CNC router and have never bothered to use homing switches, I couldn't figure out what the big deal was. I am feeling pretty ignorant right about now.
    ANY WAY.. Thank you for the informative video I think I can confidently navigate my latest build with out crashing parts and breaking tools!

    Thanks for that explanation. IDK if anymore mention this because I didn't read the comments. I noticed that when the G28 command is triggered, The movement is with all three axes at once. so if it's on the other side of the model, close to an edge, it should go up first before it goes Y & X. But I noticed in your video, it does XYZ at the same time, which would run into the model if it's in the way. am I right or wrong? Speaking and the end of the job.

      Did not see the video- but yes you are right, on a CNC mill there would be a spindle up code 1st G00 then a Z...2-3-4 inches to miss the material , spindle would go up- then the next line of code would be G28- and X and Y would rapid move home and Z would also rapid up if it was not all the way up witht he previous line of code

    G'day Patrick, another beginner question, I see in this video work Z was set at the top of the material. In the pine wood derby car you used work Z = top of the material. I guess this is a "what is best for the situation" type decision and depends on how you have set up the piece on your work space? Another great video by the way, thank you.

    I have UGS and have homing switches but have never used them. How do you initially run $H? Or I should say how do you set it up?

    Good info, never used a GRBL so wondered if it support the G53 command instead of using G28?

      l0ckcr4ck3r It does, but for our generic grbl post in Fusion 360 we use G28 to keep it more customizable.

      ***** l0ckcr4ck3r I'm going to do a G53 version soon. With home position properties in the post dialog. But G53 will still be relative to the machine 0. So you would still need to home the machine as shown in this video.

    Thanks so much for this explanation it helped a great deal. I have a question though; I have now set a G28.1 position for the spindle to move to a safe place at the front of machine for a tool change - very handy. However, I would like to have a second position to send the spindle to the rear of the machine to enable easy loading/unloading of sheet material. Is there a way for me to do this. Thanks again.

    Awesome video. However, I am slightly confused. From the way it was initially explained, I thought that the Z axis was raised first before the X,Y to prevent crashing.
    However, when watching it run, it appears as thought all three axis are moving simultaneously.
    Is there a way to get the Z cleared prior to any X or Y movement?

      Yes i have noticed that as well. I think it is an issue with GRBL that it doesn't respect the XYZ flags. You should be able to just go to the Z piece then the home position. I have not verified this or checked latest versions of GRBL though so i am not exactly sure. Either way i would try to make sure that you would not be impacted by moving directly to home position in your setup if you are going to use G28 commands.

    Nice video and explanation Patrick. I also just watched your video on machining the 3D scan of your face and enjoyed that too.I recently programmed a 4' long sign using Fusion 360. Unfortunately our Makerspace's CNC router only has 24" of travel so I had to program each end separately and reposition the workpiece on the machine to cut each end. Pretty typical stuff in the life of a CNC machinist but I went through a significant learning curve trying to figure out how to create an open boundary profile in Fusion 360 to avoid cutting the sign in half. (BTW, in spite of my search efforts it wasn't until after I had completed cutting the signs that I stumbled on the 'Left-Click' Open Boundary option ... I also had problems getting my geometry to chain but that's a story for another post.)Anyway, I was thinking of posting a tutorial on what I learned but haven't made one before and just started looking for the software to do some of the screen recording and such.I couldn't help but notice how effective the controllable virtual CNC in your posting was in helping to convey some of the points you were discussing. I've never seen that before and wondered if you'd be willing to share where you got it with us ?Thanks in advance for your consideration.Keep up the great work !Jay

      +Jay Perez Hey thanks man. No problem. I downloaded the models from the inventables site and added all the joints and assembly structure in Fusion to be able to pull it around.

      I used Camtasia to do the screen recording but there are a bunch of tools out there to do screen capture.
