Man Overboard Rescue Turn | Grabner SAILING ACADEMY [Episode 08]

In sport sailing, it can happen from time to time that a crew member goes overboard. In this video, we show you how to get him or her back on board.

It makes sense to practise the "man overboard manoeuvre" regularly. In an emergency, it helps if every move is right! Initially, it's best to practise with a buoy!
The aim is to position the boat diagonally against the wind next to the person to be rescued with a heave-to so that he/she can climb into the boat from there.
If your sailing partner or, in the case of practice, your buoy goes overboard, the next steps depend on the course you are currently sailing.
If you are sailing on a broad reach course when you lose your sailing partner, a Q tack is the right choice to turn around.
Before the manoeuvre it is important to prepare everything well - if your bowman is missing, then you have to take over his duties now. So take care of the foresheet right away.
If you are alone on the catamaran, the tack will be more successful if you shift your body weight further forward towards the bow.
For the Q tack, pick up maximum speed and then push the tiller gently to leeward. Leave the headsail BACK for a short time until the bow has turned through the wind. After the tack, let the headsail flutter or furl it immediately so that you don't have to worry about it during the rest of the rescue operation.
Now you bear away on a broad reach course to be able to heave to your colleague afterwards.
Ideally, the catamaran comes to a stop so that the person to be rescued can hold on and pull him-/herself up.
If you are sailing on a beating course, you have to gybe to retrieve your lost crew member.
After the gybe, navigate the boat upwind to your sailing partner with a heave-to.
