- Trying out the Katanaboy 650. Cleared a bit of the trail into one of my favorite spots. Got some wood for the fire and cut a large junk of wood to use as a table. The saw makes short work of anything up to 8 inches across. Larger pieces gives you a good workout but it still cuts easily through them. The nice thing about the saw is you can vary your pace to suit your fitness level, lol. I've been using a 36 inch buck saw and the 650 is a much more efficient cutting tool. I don't find it too heavy for hikes under an hour or so but that all depends on how much weight you can comfortably carry. Easily the best hand saw I've ever used.

This is the life. Nobody else around, just you, your dogs and the wilderness. 👍
I just picked up a Silky Katanaboy 500. Love it. I'm still learning how to tackle various situations. I was watching you cut through a fairly thick log laying on the ground. I knew that at some point the blade would get stuck. I learned a useful trick from you when I saw you jam a smaller log underneath to prop up the larger log and take the bind off the blade. I'll pass this trick on to my son. Thanks for making this video!
i taught myself the same trick.only i used my ford escort car jack. had a army shovel aometimea had to dig a 6 in hole to get jack underneath log. it took a minute but paid iff big time..
@@GRILLBUOY101 Re a downed 15-16 inch downed log near my home, I was thinking of wedging some wood underneath the log, using felling wedges (suggested by another gentleman on youtube), or using a floor jack. Didn't think of a car jack, but that would probably serve the mission and be much more convenient than using a floor jack. Thanks for the idea.
@@garyfranklin7747 yeah it works.
it works if u can get under it so if its dirt and u have a sm shovel dig a few inches and it works definitely great fir freeing up ur stuck
bowsaws and stuff
No blabla..Love it! Then its nice to see someone that can use that tool properly
The best video about Silky KB 650 I've seen. Much better than Canadian Prepper (too commercial) and Far North Bushcraft and Survival (too minimalist). Lovely dogs!!!
Its all about finesse with the hand saws. The trick is letting it work without killing you.
Watching a relaxing dog is relaxing.
Great video of the 650 in action. I used my 650 and my Bigboy 2000 xl to harvest some Locust for campfires. Exquisite, man-powered, wood eating machines.
The branch I took off was 3/4 dead, and it was 7 to 8 inches at the base.
i used locust some golden rock's .green, blue flames
you did some really good cutting.nice endi g with the big steak!.i remember bout 16 yrs ago i went to the river cut wood started a fire . started my grill cut ip poratoes .had french fries deep fried in skillet and grilled a rib eye.over charcoal & lump.it was a mild winter day prob 44 or so.good times at any dsy of week or temperature. my fav part was sawing logs .30 in bow saw
As the dog enjoys munching on tree stumps, you enjoy munching on steak, smart choice and great saw work.
Cool i like how you cook at the end the stake yummi👍
Like a knife through butter. Just received my Big Boy Outback and Pocket Boy Silky's!
Thank you for this video. Im researching a good, non power saw to take overland. This might just fit the bill.
Super video, asi si tu Silky Katanaboy 650 koupím, přeji hodně štěstí, taky mám dva psy. Czec. Rep.
'Great peice of kit' like the brits would say... :-)

Good job Mr Ranger
I've just bought the 650 and am going out winter camping in Scotland this weekend. I think I'll build a log cabin lol
You certainly could, lol
Too bad you didnt bring some plastic sheeting to save the sawdust. Could have been something to just have stored away for another adventure as something easy to start a fire with for a Ferro rod or another type of striker for a fire starting kit... Maybe an idea for next time? I have the same saw, I cut through some hickory the other day, like crazy... It was very pleasant to the nose to...
funny, I was just looking at silky's and that grill about an hour ago. Do you like the grill?
Goodness my dog just loves to eat tree stumps also!
Wow what an awesome saw! It makes shot work of cross cuts. I wonder, however, have you tried to do a rip cut with it and if so what it was like?
umbalaba
I haven't tried ripping anything. I would imagine it cuts just as well but as you can see it's a minute or so to cut through a 10 inch log, ripping anything of decent size will be a workout.
Yeah, you are right, rip cutting by hand is too slow to be viable, but I find it SO satisfying. I have for some time been on the look out for a pull saw with a nice long saw blade for rip sawing. I thought that the Silky katanaboy 650 might work. It sure has the blade length :-)
umbalaba
Well it doesn't get better than the katanaboy
how much wood can be cut until well does not cut cleanly?
nerijus32 skaudys
If you are careful with the blade and don't hit it off rocks and stuff it will stay sharp for a long time. It's a tempered and treated blade.
Would you take this on a portage based canoe trip of 5 days or more?
No. At 2.8lbs I would not bring this on a 5 day canoe trip with portages. I do bring it on canoe trips that have short or few portages. On a 5 day trip you will be wanting to go as light as possible. a good light axe/hatchet and a 21 inch Sven saw or Filzer Buckster Bow Saw (which I use) is what I recommend.
OK. Have you tried the Silky Saw Sugowaza?
Say please, is it your saw or did you get it to advertise? If yours, is it worth buying, or would you recommend it?
Say please??
Great!
