I’m the general manager of a 74 room property and have been in the industry for 12 years. For anyone wanting to take this career path, know what you’re getting into, and make sure to surround yourself with reliable, experienced people. Managing a hotel of any size is extremely stressful. It is not a 40-hours-a-week, Monday to Friday career. It is seven days a week, 24 hours a day. I typically get a single day off per week, and that day still ends with me having done something related to my property. It’s stressful and requires a lot out of you, but damn if it isn’t fun. I meet new people all the time. My staff is my second family. I love what I do and don’t dread going to work every day. If it’s for you, work toward it. Getting a formal education helps, but in my experience, actual on the job experience matters way more. If I have to choose between someone with a bachelors and no experience, or someone with no degree and five years experience, I’m going with the latter.

Hard work and working your way up through the ranks. No degree in the world will get you GM position. You have to basically work in different department, round up your operational knowledge than sales and you need to be a strong leader .
