I referee soccer and I definitely don't do it for the money. It's good money for teenagers who are mostly assistant referees, though. As the (center) referee, I get ~$50-60 per match depending on the age level where the ARs get $20-30. I try to set expectations for the parents before the match by telling them that nothing that happens on the pitch today will affect anyone's spot on the national team.
I played baseball and football through college and basketball through high school...never met an honest ump or ref. A lot of these guys do in fact do it for money, because they can't get other jobs. That and some of them really get off on the authority.
@@haydencook682 I was a high school basketball and football official in Florida and North Carolina for 10 years of each. Virtually of the officials I worked with were completely honest and wanted to be unnoticed as much as possible. There were varying levels of competence, as in any industry. But generally the less competent officials were assigned to smaller schools, while the big schools were officiated by more experienced, proven professionals. None of them can be doing it for the money, since there's just not that much money to be had. Drive an hour and a half to get to the school, work for an hour of pregame, two hours for the game itself, shower and drive home after, so what, 6-7 hours of time? And make $70 for a varsity game, which gets played once per week. Do the same for JV on Thursdays, but get paid $50 instead. That's not the kind of money that will entice dishonest people.
@@haydencook682 you sound bitter...you must have been on the bench most of the time...alot of these refs are former players that enjoy the sport and don't mind helping a new generation learn and play the sport the right way..trust me 20 to 50 bucks a game isn't "doing it for the money"...sorry you sucked and turned bitter

That being said, the actions were completely uncalled for and he deserves whatever punishment he gets for it.
Jomboy, you HAVE to do a breakdown of the two players who hit the ref from John Jay High School in San Antonio. The coach told them to do it. One knocked him down, then the other came in and slammed into him in the ground. All three got arrested. Then you also need to do a breakdown of the kid's weird mullet like haircut when he went to court. It was way worse than this one.
I’m from near where this happened the whole team “blue” Edinburg season has ended. None of the team will be continuing their season due to 88 the school board deemed.
Yes, he really needed to be held for a psychological evaluation & his blood checked for steroids. His bail should have been suspended until the evaluations came back.
This happened at an away game maybe 25 years ago. We came back from 21 at the half. The back at the time went about 15 yards blind side on a ref....the ref suffered a concussion, herniated spine and broken wrist. The visitors (our group) had to be escorted off the field. Fans were throwing rocks and it’s still a bitter rivalry to this day. The back from my understanding was banned from ever playing any sport again and his name was well known throughout town. I want to say it was in 97 maybe ft. Wingate NM. Wingate vs. Crownpoint. Crownpoint came back 24-21 and the game was forfeited before the 4th.
Some years ago I had a girlfriend who said that boys/men between the ages of 15 -23 have problems controlling their testosterone-driven emotions and should be kept away from society until full adulthood had been reached. She wasn't entirely serious but she wasn't entirely joking, either.
The ref never made any bad calls tho. The kid clearly had anger issues as he had been throwing punches before. That’s why he was ejected. The refs did nothing wrong
I believe the current thinking is that the two best options for dealing with anger are either to have a constructive outlet that both allows for physical release but is also useful and appropriate (think chopping wood or scrubbing dirty floors) or to learn methods of controlling and withholding anger (called "bottling up"). Both are better than making a habit of pointlessly giving physical (punching bag, breaking things) or verbal (yelling, swearing over and over) vent to the rage, which is what I associate with "rage rooms". That kind of behavior reinforces bad responses to anger, especially among children. It also is unlikely to be available in many adult situations. The kid here likely couldn't just find a rage room in this circumstance, even if he wanted to.
@@Tyrantofthewind If this were a college game, I'd agree. But it is high school. He'll be cut from all his teams, if not outright expelled. Maybe he goes to a JC, but it is unlikely we'll ever hear about him again.

He was also kicked out of a soccer game for hitting an official. He was suspended from all school sports by the conference. He was also arrested and charged.
He was arrested for this hit on the ref in 2020. And by late March 2022, back in jail after police found him sleeping in a car, with plastic bags containing six grams of cocaine which resulted in a felony “manufacture or delivery of a controlled substance” charge that comes with a $50k bond.
That was a bullshit play. I’m not a Marlins fan or a Reds hater, but that call was just straight dumb. To the umps defense, it was a new rule and pretty vague as to how to apply it. So I guess it established how NOT to interpret the rule
Three weeks after this incident, he gets on TV and apologizes for the hit on the ref. That's not an apology. That's a calculated attempt to not loose a football scholarship and/or some breaks from the criminal trial he is about to go thru.

Cool down? He was ejected from the game. That walk 100% made him angrier and justifiably so. Doesn’t excuse what he did, but come on man, use your head.

If your anger is at the point that you need to "cool down", it won't happen in 10 seconds. Bizarre comment.
The referees at this level don't do it for the money. Have to remember that as an athlete or spectator
I know right. These are probably just some old dudes who love the game and he gets laid out for it
I played baseball and football through college and basketball through high school...never met an honest ump or ref.

@@ZYGTropicals that’s so true lmao I know quite a few actually
