The plated brass that's used in a lot of cheap imports will roll off a lot of treble. Unplated nickel silver/german silver is the most transparent. Plated nickel silver is fine too.
Really appreciate this video. I have a 74 es335 that needs some work. I can select either pickup, but not both together. I was hesitant to tackle this myself, but this vid gives me a little more confidence.
I rewired a Tokai ES copy and I had to take everything out and put everything back in through the F hole because the pickup cavity didn't have a large enough hole.
I might suggest to pay particular attention to how things come out, because you will have to put them back in reverse order. My friend had a local music store tech install Gibson 57's in a guitar, and they used long shaft pots, and the knobs stick up about 3/16", horrible looking, I would not have accepted it. I did one, and I test fit one pot in the closest hole before installing the whole harness.
Hi, nice video I'm learning how to replace the pickups on my LARRY CARLTON H7V Vintage Sunburst that mounts the P90s, I've already disassembled everything but I noticed that the neck pickup is mounted the opposite way to the bridge one, that is, not the wire facing upwards while the bridge pickup has the wire facing downwards, seen the guitar as if I were playing it, that is, from above is it normal? Don't you have the famous nasal effect?
@@PsionicAudio I’m with you on that. Those quick connects (pickup connection only) seem like a convenient way to swap pickups without gutting it. I’ve heard there are other ways as well. Haven’t seen them yet though. Thanks again!
A guy came to check out a number of my amps. He had just picked up a used epi 335. Im used to playing my lp traditional with updated wiring and paf clones. The epi sounded so muddy and horrible it was awkward as hell. I kept thinking he would think my amps sucked . So I made a point of playing my lp a. Bit through each amp. I had forgotten how truly horrible epis sound.. Interestingly , wben I rewired my buddy's epi lp custom to 50s style with better pots and caps , using the stock pickups and it was much more of an improvement than I had ever expected ..
I can totally endorse what Lyle says about these pickups being too dark. They are very loud also so I guess too many turns / too much inductance. I had a set in the old parts bin from a customer that didn't like the darkness. Foolishly I ignored the warning and put them in a Richenbacher 325 style guitar that I made. Man it's a perceptual shock to play a guitar that should be a bit jangley that is brutish and dark.
The IR engine seems optimised for offering something like Back in Black u67/u87 semi distanced micing where the u47 at 15cm gets some air and really sounds like it 3d wise. The vintage greenback sound is also a rarer offering. The highlight of all these are the accuracy of the circuitry of the heads. Old plexi and hiwatt behaves fantastic. I also think the IRs are great with those. The legacy cabs you can find sound much worse, but I really enjoy the room mics in those so I do get those going, it's all marshall and one of those has delay so two room mic pairs on that and 15-25ms delay is on all presets in suite mode. Input can be odd, though. I think someone asked and worked out that Vintage and bass suite wants 12db above zero while marshall are too hit on that. And that fucks the behavior badly if it ain't right.
you might be misunderestimating the need for string and pick guard removal instruction, though I would posit that your audience skews towards the right side of the bell curve...
Excellent video.
Was looking forward to this vid...😎👍👍
Surgical tubing works GREAT when pulling pots into place😉👍👍

Right, thanks.
Great stuff as always!
Interesting video. Thank you.

Funny lookin' amp.
Thanks again for sharing

Same with the Aria’s, have to tie dental floss round the old pots/switch/jack and then retie it around the new parts to fish them back through.

Will you be installing those quick connects that I’ve seen on other harnesses? Just recently got me a 335 so thank you for this, Lyle. Cheers!
Never. Solder or go home.

I guess there will not be a part 2 on Epi with Fralin's.
I really enjoy your channel.
When will be doing another live, open-mike program??
Part 2 is being finished now. Next Saturday for the live chat.
Thanks.
Yeah!!!

For those on a budget, the GFS P90s are a good replacement
Nice watch!! I still think you need a NATO band.🙂
what watch are u wearing this morning?
The early Korean made models need changing of all electronics; the hardware is decent. Maybe the newer models have better electronics?
Heat shrink? Just use electrical tape, dude! 😉
I hope that is meant in fun.
Old electrical tape sdhesive is disgusting.
@@peterstephen1562 Agreed. I have the chuck keys to prove it.

Man, you need to be a proctologist to work on these things.
