    Hey man, you helped me finally learn how to stop in skates! The tip about bending your knees to the same point where the tip of the toes are was the most helpful!
    Now I can play backyard hockey without looking like a tool :)

    My problem is with weight distribution, angle of skates, and having my knees bent. I land on my face more often then not when i fully commit to any attempt.

    Getting your skates sharpened is like adding grip or "bite" to them, this will make anything to do with using your edges a little harder. As you skate on them and keep trying to stop, they will become less sharp and your confidence will return. The sharper the skates, the harder it is to stop. Keep at it and it will become easier. :) Thank you for your kind words.

    Try to get a slightly shallow sharpen on your skates.

    You're a great skater, and there's good advice here, as well as nice demonstrations, but this is an advanced technique, requiring use of inside and outside edges. I've been workng on it for months and still cannot correctly use the outside edge on the rear foot. I started slow and worked up speed. I certainly cannot do a high speed stop, except backwards oddly enough. A skater I speak to at the rink has been working on it for six months.

    Is it possible to do this stop with completely dull skates that are used as rentals?
    I don't own my own a pair because I go like once or twice a year with friends and I'm quite content with not sinking hundreds into a pair.
    I'm really interested because the last time I went; my friend who is a figure skater ran as fast as she could as if she was going to crash and then stopped just shy of nicking me while spraying ice all over me. Needless to say I was so freaked out I literally jumped lol

  • @carinadiaz1854

    It's harder to stop with sharpened skates, but is harder to skate if they are not sharpened so..

    • @farwi90
      @farwi90 8 лет назад +1

      +Hockey Butera You have to choose, by experience, what diameter of sharpening is best for you. Sharpening your skates should make you better on the ice. You also have to make sure you are sharpening it at a good place. If you do not know where to start, research hollow diameters and which dimensions are best for kinds of skating. You have speed, mobility, stability etc.. it is hard to choose because it is difficult to find one where you can do many things on but with experience, you will find your optimum selection.

    When you do this are you keeping your weight evenly distributed on both feet?

  • @HockeyTutorialOfficial
    @HockeyTutorialOfficial  13 лет назад

    @nickairsoft123 (try not to lean in any direction except back while stopping) Main reason for this while learning to stop is not leaning back and not bending your knees enough, make sure you keep thoughs points in mind while learning..

    Thanks a lot man! My friends told me to just turn and I kept toppling over because I never had my knees bent, nor did I do the hop. They also said to do snowplow for starters but my feet would just come together, so I would never stop.

      You do realise that your the one how decided to trust he's advice's. One min did you go full speed on your skates and then try to stop because if you did. You are suppose to start with a 2 foot plow stop then a 1 foot plow stop then a hockey stop. Oh and if I'm wrong about how you broke your ankles. Then sorry for assuming.

    Hey chris, iv been skating for years now but i used to have the problem with my skates chattering whn i hockey stopped. i found that ther was eithe r too much weight or too much angle on that foot. the chatter was caused by the blade digging in too much that the force is sent back into the skate this causing the jumping or chatter.
    ur doing a great job but i thought id let you know.

    How wrong is it to stop by doing a hop and then actually doing a crossover, aka, stopping to the right and your right crosses over your left that has most of the weight on it?

      Just listen to everything he says and switch left with right. It's the exact same thing just with the other leg.

  • @HockeyTutorialOfficial
    @HockeyTutorialOfficial  13 лет назад

    @lilpower1273 No that isnt the main reason for the skipping, its normally down to skaters getting use to hockey stopping with blunt skates as you dont have to worry about the weight being even in both blades and angle being correct when skates are blunt, once they get them sharpened you need to make sure all the basic techniques are correct, if the weight and angle are off, your blades will skip along the ice

    • @yoshinmel8003

      Turn your shoulders. So that you can see the side of your leg but you can see your other shoulder. So your kind of twisting your body. Or at I maybe just wrong. But just it a go.

    Great teaching method mate! Just one thing would be when you show them very quick snippets, they are cut a little too short to even distinguish what happened as opposed to your full run up then stops etc!
    Having said that, VERY helpful! Thanks! :D can't wait to try it tonight!

      Katya Jasmin not really an expert on the subject but..well its not impossible to stop like this on figure skates but it would take more effort..aaand falling since i think the hockey skates have a bigger groove on the edge than figure skates.
