    It's not actually a love song! It's more about politicians using religion as a justification for gaining power and abusing it, as well as religious authorities in general using their position of power to excuse deceit and abuses

      Can you elaborate on it being about Mike Pence? It's not the first time I've heard that.

    • @Britton_Thompson
      @Britton_Thompson Год назад

      No, it's not about Mike Pence. Tobias Forge lives in Sweden and couldn't pick Mike Pence out of a lineup to save his life. It's about Vladimir Putin. Putin sells himself to the Russian people as an Orthodox Christian Church crusader like Ivan the Great (aka; "Ivan the Terrible"), but in reality is just another tyrant funded by wealthy oligarchs. The oligarchs are the ones he's referring to when he says "You want a seat by the pyre and never ever suffer again?"
      Meaning, "I will provide you with status, security, and importance that'll make you untouchable.... until my secret ambitions for conquest blow up in all our faces and the masses come for you at the same time they come for me. But, you know, until then.... it'll be GREAT! Whaddya say, can I sign you up for a donation?"
      When Ivan sacked the city of Novgorod in 1570, he was infamous for having his engineers build a giant frying pan that burned men alive. To spare the rich aristocrats of the city this same fate, they could survive if they bankrolled Ivan's army's march on Novgorod, and they could sit beside him on his viewing stand while he watched dozens of people get burned alive in the massive frying pan.
      These are all clear signifiers that Tobias is referring to Russian tyrants, new and old.

    First time I heard Griftwood I immediately thought of Def Leppard. Stands to reason since Joe Elliot sings backing vocals on Spillways.
    I’m 56 years old and found Ghost only about four months ago (heard Call Me Little Sunshine). Having been a (lifelong) fan of cerebral music when RUSH became my favorite band at age 14, and having become an audiophile since then, I was somewhat skeptical about the satanic lyricisms of Ghost.
    That subsided shortly after hearing a few more songs, particularly after hearing “He Is.” It wasn’t the lyrics that drew me in, but the musicianship and variety of genres. I really don’t like too many bands that have “a sound.”
    I dove into the deep end and bought every album on ITunes, and ordered every LP, including the Extended Impera boxed set (copy 2112 of 2200 copies worldwide … ironic that I got copy 2112 and love RUSH, of whom Tobias Forge is also a fan), and took my 17 year old son to our first Ritual this past August.
    AMAZING MUSIC!!!
    AMAZING SHOW!!!
    AMAZING TALENT!!!
    AMAZING ENTERTAINER!!!
    Tobias Forge is truly a genius. Neither he nor Ghost are promoting satanism as much as they are raising awareness of it, evident by their tongue is cheek attitude about themselves. Forge created an entire “decades old” backstory for the band and its succession /lineage of singers.
    Check out the Ghost RUclips channel and watch the Chapters. Papa IV / Cardinal Copia is my favorite iteration of band leader to date. I absolutely LOVE Cardinal Copia’s aloofness and humor.

    This song really is brilliant in it's use of so many pop music hooks, Tobias said he was going for Def Leppard Hysteria level production songwriting and production on this album and I think he nailed it, almost hate how much I like it haha..."yes", it's a love song..."I'm your rock, baby, I won't back down" ...like Hysteria, it's so damn likeable for cheesy pop-hooks...eesh
