AoT originally, likely, leeched off of Claymore. The thing is that the author of Claymore knew what he wanted from the overarching plot and DnD'd his characters around it. There the whole "you're actually a prisoner island experiment" plot was also mentioned, because it had no actual bearing on characters' actions, nor they were actually strong enough to go against it. In AoT... it just kept going.
i didnt think the ending was the best it couldve gotten either, but it was *far* from bad lol. the entire show remained at least great from beginning to end.
