Many years ago (late 1990s), a friend had painted her bathroom black. It was stunning! It was contrasted with classic white tile and white porcelain. And, on the walls, she had hung gorgeous vintage paintings in gold frames. I remember it to this day because I had never before (or since) seen anyone decorate their bathroom in this manner. It was absolutely gorgeous!
I love that blacks, brass and greens are making a comeback! It has a sort of classy Victorian feel to me when it's done right. And I love Victorian decor!
I've always loved this style too but I'm somewhat apprehensive about it becoming trendy. If it gets massive then it could look dated/overdone after a while.
In our house before we moved in, I insisted on painting all my interior doors black with a blue undertone. I can't tell you how amazing they look against my dark cognac colored floors and with the brass knobs. That's actually one of the reasons I wanted to paint them black so that my dated knobs would look classy. Everyone looked at my like I was nuts, but I now can't imagine them being any other color. It just adds so much dimension to my rooms without needing to spend tons of money on art.
I absolutely love my black window frames and wouldn’t change them for any amount of money! Each person should have their own deco style and decorate as to their own personal likes and dislikes!
Love that you’re addressing black for interiors! It’s actually so important. And it doesn’t have to be jet black. Off black or a dark gray works in the same fashion. I believe every room needs something “black” or very dark to ground the room. Otherwise our eye just wanders around the room and never has the opportunity to rest.
I would like to hear more of your thoughts about painting the wall behind the TV black and have you show how you would decorate around it. With TVs getting so big, having the black wall behind it sounds like a great way to minimize it’s appearance.

We painted my daughter's bathroom black when she was in high school - so sometime in the early 2000s. There was a huge mirror and a lot of white trim. It was gorgeous. Black and white toile was extremely popular. Black painted furniture with gold accents was trendy then too.

I have had white walls with black trim, doors and furniture for the last 10 years that I have owned my house and have never ever got sick of it 🥰 It's not a trend for me though. What is new for me is the moody victorian feel and I'm working on switching my modern furniture for things with more character. I just bought a chesterfield couch and chair and it has made such a HUGE difference. I have always had victorian style stuff pinned on pinterest but I never connected the dots that it was the ornate and traditional styles that pulled the look off and I'm so excited to pull it all together. I LOVE dark cottagecore with purple and green. Purple has been my favorite color since I was a small child and I added dark purple floral art and purple mushrooms and forest art into my space and it's soo gorgeous. Velvet furniture and curtain make it cozy. 🥰 I swapped the daylight bulbs for soft white and it made a HUGE difference too 🥰 Next step is to swap my black modern picture frames for ornate ones and my modern square tables for ones with turned or queen anne legs. 😍
Black has been my primary color for Furniture, vases, throws and many other decor pieces. I like the combo of white and black or gray and black...Black , brown and gold is beautiful together
No one did black better than the Victorians. And black is perfect for making any color you love POP, so works like an outline. I think you can never go wrong with painting your window trim black on the exterior as it is sort of a "fool the eye" technique for making your windows look larger and you won't tire of it on the outside..

My favorite part of this video is that brass is being welcomed back. I feel like it has been hated on for the last 10-20 years. I have beautiful, big brass lamps that were a wedding gift to my parents in the 1970’s... and I LOVE them! I just need to figure out what shade compliments them. My mom always liked the pleated kind (I don’t). Maybe I’ll paint the shades black!
Paint the outside black and the inside gloss gold. The gold reflects the light and give more back without adding higher wattage bulbs and heat from the high wattage.

Did the country thing during the 90's & have had b/w for the last 4yrs & I love it I call my look "Modern French mixed w Southern Charm! lol Def agree abt getting your black paint right. That makes a huge difference as well as lighting. Hope more people will give this color a try! It's really beautiful

Our home was built in 1976. We are the se one owners and have owned the home 8.5 years. The main floor (guest) bath has black toilet, tub and sink. They are Koehler brand and very expensive. We love the way they look and have decorated the room to fit and we get tons of compliments on that room.

This was so helpful. I had painted a very dark grey/black with a purple undertone accent wall in my dining room and something was off. I had a black IKEA console as a temporary buffet (as I am looking for the perfect piece...takes me forever) and after your video I moved an old warm brown dresser in its place. What a difference! I recently purchased a house where the ceilings throughout were painted black, with white trim. Initially, I thought I’d paint them once I moved in, but the black ceilings really grew on me. Now I love them. For a small house, they make the ceilings look higher thus making the rooms look larger. After all, isn’t your ceilings another walls? As a contractor said when he walked thru, it looks like a million.

I feel oddly proud now. I have had my black faux leather couch for 10 years now, and still love it. I have dogs, so it frequently has blankets on it, which does allow some change to colour and pattern. But mostly, I use green and black blankets on it.
Literally just put dark bronze windows in our new build (still under construction). They read as black in most lighting, especially from the inside. I absolutely love them. Though, I did hesitate at first because they’re “trendy”. It’s funny because I’m willing to take that risk, but I’m not willing to take the risk of doing brass faucets even though I love them. Haha. Sometimes we just have to go for it.
We had lots of black in out TN home. I chose to not use black here in SC, which was a very difficult decision because I love it. Our daughter bought her first home and she loves black, also, and we gifted her all of the black decor, furniture, etc. She was thrilled!!
Love the advice you gave. Don't think I would do a wall to scared for that. But I did get a hutch recently and painted it black and thought of the same colors to add to it to warm it down. I would rather go this way to add the black in home that way if I get tired of it I can always paint it a different color down the road.

A black wall is next on my list. I am currently working on a hunter green wall for our home office. The plan is to paint Onyx from Benjamin Moore where we have a wet bar. I am going to add midtone wood shelving for mugs and glasses on the wall and some hanging plants. But first!! I have to finish the office.
Off my open living/dining/lounge room I have a small entryway and two small hallways, all three of these small spaces are painted black (dark charcoal) and I love them and get complements off everyone who visits. My lower cabinets in the kitchen area are the same charcoal too.
The movie It’s Complicated with Meryl Streep and Alec Baldwin featured a kitchen with black windows and it was my favorite style in 2009 and that seems to be the exact same look you are referring to in this video. I don’t think black windows when done right will go out of style.
I wanted to use a “black accent wall”....but instead I painted a large cabinet/Armoire in black that takes up the small wall that I wanted to do... it is like doing a black fireplace surround. I love it! I can make it bigger by opening the doors to show off my decor ( it is a room that is used to walk from the living room to the kitchen 🤷♀️🤷♀️ an 1888 house ...it was the original dining room ). But I painted the inside black also , hence making it bigger by opening the door ! I can’t tell what undertones my black is? It is “Little Black Dress” by DIY. I love it. I have charcoal gray furniture and love the color. I remember the 80’s ...I was just starting my own home then. Was in love with the “black and greens”.... Nice to see it back! Black is definitely dramatic and masculine. Accent decor pieces and drapes would be a happy medium. I use black with a wrought iron floor lamp and the legs of 4 plant stands with large pots of zz plants, snake plants, and a monstera deliciousa in my front sitting room. The walls are then in mustard gold and burnt orange with light beige loveseats.
I personally love the black with green undertones. I think it looks best with red brick (or leans toward orange). I suppose that's why it also looks so good with medium wood tones and cognac colors.
In American colonial days black paint was extremely expensive. It became a status symbol among the rich to have black doors, shutters, and black painted ironwork.

I just redesigned my hall bath. I don't feel too comfortable with painting a wall black. I just painted it a Grey with blue undertones. My counter is deep green. All of my accents are in black.
I'll do black and lavender walls in my new bed room. Black on the wall by the window and on one short wall by my bed. Then black and lavender striped pattern on the other short wall with lavender book shelf and wardrobe and then lavender on the wall opposite the window wall, as I've got a black self adhesive fireplace wall mural going on that wall
The use of black can be interesting also to hide flaws in unexpected places. We used black paint on our old garage ceiling (it was built with wood with its copper pipes and electrical cables exposed...plus the wood was badly stained. Our home is an old 1910 farmhouse and the garage was built much later beside the house with direct access to the kitchen. It was not a pretty transition from garage to kitchen so we added insulation and drywalls. Painted the walls white and the ceiling black. The black hid all the imperfections and exposed cables and piping. The garage is still not done bc of other more urgent projects but at least it is not such an eyesore.
This looks like someone toured my house lol. I have onyx walls throughout with gold psychedelic wallpaper on a wall in the living room with chrome gold and clear accents. 2 plants. Oversized art. I did steampunk /industrial accents in the kitchen. A plush rug in the dining room that POPS! Bedroom is light and neutral though.

I am getting a manufactured home. It has wood accents that are a blend of dark and light. The kitchen cabinets are white with no uppers. I am planning on painting the kitchen wall black with a combo of industrial and wood open shelving. I am also painting the family room wall ,that is open but opposite to the kitchen wall , black chalkboard. That area will be a coffee bar with metal and wood shelving and a lounge chair or small bistro table. Here is my dilemma. The living room is also open to the kitchen and I want warm earth tones for the wall paint. Thought about a sage green. And advice?

Love the cognac with black background. I've saved various pictures on pinterest with that vibe. My biggest problem is that in our 120 year old farmhouse, that we have lovingly cared for for 43 years, has at least 2 doorways in each room. Kitchen-2 doorways, dining room-5 doorways, living room-3 doorways, sunroom-2 doorways and bedroom-2. It has been challenging beyond imagination to arrange furniture let alone find a focal wall. Just venting- sorry! Otherwise I love your videos because they are so uplifting!
Yes, those rooms with lots of doorways are what I often call "glorified hallways", and they DO make furniture arranging very difficult! We've tackled a few of those spaces in my behind the scenes class! It takes some outside the box thinking, but we can usually find something that works!

I like the theatrical look, where the surrounding is black and the floor in the middle is bright. Most of the black rooms I've seen, painted everything in black and it's very hard to look at things.
Quick question regarding your comment about black windows becoming dated. I was actually considering doing the black pane industrial look that you see lately. If that will easily become dated, can you suggest an alternative type of window that wouldn’t become dated?
I'd stick with white, and use shutters or other accents that are easier/far less expensive to change to get a more unique look if that's what you're going for! :)
To me grey is so depressing. All these ladies are using grey upon grey upon grey. But hey it is neutral and cohesive. :} I have virtually no grey in my house. Now I love it when it is mixed with other colors but come on it is grey walls, grey couches and chairs, grey dishes and vases, grey rugs, grey paintings. Yes I know people love it so I give. It is your space and I really do respect your space. I love black and my love comes from it by my obsession with antique and vintage black and white prints with black frames. I would be lost without color and lots of it. What would this world be if we were all the same..... Boring. God Bless.

Every trend looks dated eventually. Same in fashion. There are no styles that are “timeless”. That’s a sales gimmick.

I feel oddly proud now. I have had my black faux leather couch for 10 years now, and still love it. I have dogs, so it frequently has blankets on it, which does allow some change to colour and pattern. But mostly, I use green and black blankets on it.
Literally just put dark bronze windows in our new build (still under construction). They read as black in most lighting, especially from the inside. I absolutely love them. Though, I did hesitate at first because they’re “trendy”. It’s funny because I’m willing to take that risk, but I’m not willing to take the risk of doing brass faucets even though I love them. Haha. Sometimes we just have to go for it.

We had lots of black in out TN home. I chose to not use black here in SC, which was a very difficult decision because I love it. Our daughter bought her first home and she loves black, also, and we gifted her all of the black decor, furniture, etc. She was thrilled!!
Love the advice you gave. Don't think I would do a wall to scared for that. But I did get a hutch recently and painted it black and thought of the same colors to add to it to warm it down. I would rather go this way to add the black in home that way if I get tired of it I can always paint it a different color down the road.
Yep! I love how easy it is to repaint things (though quite a bit of work!), it's always good to have it as an option.

15 years ago I painted my kitchen cabinets black and the walls a very light blue. It turned out stunning and everyone loved it.

A black wall is next on my list. I am currently working on a hunter green wall for our home office. The plan is to paint Onyx from Benjamin Moore where we have a wet bar. I am going to add midtone wood shelving for mugs and glasses on the wall and some hanging plants. But first!! I have to finish the office.
That plan sounds great for the wet bar! But I appreciate the idea of finishing one project before starting another!

Off my open living/dining/lounge room I have a small entryway and two small hallways, all three of these small spaces are painted black (dark charcoal) and I love them and get complements off everyone who visits. My lower cabinets in the kitchen area are the same charcoal too.

The movie It’s Complicated with Meryl Streep and Alec Baldwin featured a kitchen with black windows and it was my favorite style in 2009 and that seems to be the exact same look you are referring to in this video. I don’t think black windows when done right will go out of style.

I wanted to use a “black accent wall”....but instead I painted a large cabinet/Armoire in black that takes up the small wall that I wanted to do... it is like doing a black fireplace surround. I love it! I can make it bigger by opening the doors to show off my decor ( it is a room that is used to walk from the living room to the kitchen 🤷♀️🤷♀️ an 1888 house ...it was the original dining room ). But I painted the inside black also , hence making it bigger by opening the door !

Great idea to do a large piece of furniture as your accent instead of a wall - it sounds like that is working perfectly for you!
Black is definitely dramatic and masculine. Accent decor pieces and drapes would be a happy medium. I use black with a wrought iron floor lamp and the legs of 4 plant stands with large pots of zz plants, snake plants, and a monstera deliciousa in my front sitting room. The walls are then in mustard gold and burnt orange with light beige loveseats.
You just saved me from black window frames in my remodel. I LOVE them, but you're right. Whew.

I personally love the black with green undertones. I think it looks best with red brick (or leans toward orange). I suppose that's why it also looks so good with medium wood tones and cognac colors.

I just redesigned my hall bath. I don't feel too comfortable with painting a wall black. I just painted it a Grey with blue undertones. My counter is deep green. All of my accents are in black.

I'll do black and lavender walls in my new bed room. Black on the wall by the window and on one short wall by my bed. Then black and lavender striped pattern on the other short wall with lavender book shelf and wardrobe and then lavender on the wall opposite the window wall, as I've got a black self adhesive fireplace wall mural going on that wall
The use of black can be interesting also to hide flaws in unexpected places. We used black paint on our old garage ceiling (it was built with wood with its copper pipes and electrical cables exposed...plus the wood was badly stained. Our home is an old 1910 farmhouse and the garage was built much later beside the house with direct access to the kitchen. It was not a pretty transition from garage to kitchen so we added insulation and drywalls. Painted the walls white and the ceiling black. The black hid all the imperfections and exposed cables and piping. The garage is still not done bc of other more urgent projects but at least it is not such an eyesore.

This looks like someone toured my house lol. I have onyx walls throughout with gold psychedelic wallpaper on a wall in the living room with chrome gold and clear accents. 2 plants. Oversized art. I did steampunk /industrial accents in the kitchen. A plush rug in the dining room that POPS! Bedroom is light and neutral though.

I am getting a manufactured home. It has wood accents that are a blend of dark and light. The kitchen cabinets are white with no uppers. I am planning on painting the kitchen wall black with a combo of industrial and wood open shelving. I am also painting the family room wall ,that is open but opposite to the kitchen wall , black chalkboard. That area will be a coffee bar with metal and wood shelving and a lounge chair or small bistro table. Here is my dilemma. Love the cognac with black background. I've saved various pictures on pinterest with that vibe. My biggest problem is that in our 120 year old farmhouse, that we have lovingly cared for for 43 years, has at least 2 doorways in each room. Kitchen-2 doorways, dining room-5 doorways, living room-3 doorways, sunroom-2 doorways and bedroom-2. It has been challenging beyond imagination to arrange furniture let alone find a focal wall. Just venting- sorry! Otherwise I love your videos because they are so uplifting!
Yes, those rooms with lots of doorways are what I often call "glorified hallways", and they DO make furniture arranging very difficult! We've tackled a few of those spaces in my behind the scenes class! It takes some outside the box thinking, but we can usually find something that works!

I like the theatrical look, where the surrounding is black and the floor in the middle is bright. Most of the black rooms I've seen, painted everything in black and it's very hard to look at things.

Quick question regarding your comment about black windows becoming dated. I was actually considering doing the black pane industrial look that you see lately. If that will easily become dated, can you suggest an alternative type of window that wouldn’t become dated?
I'd stick with white, and use shutters or other accents that are easier/far less expensive to change to get a more unique look if that's what you're going for! :)
To me grey is so depressing. All these ladies are using grey upon grey upon grey. But hey it is neutral and cohesive. :} I have virtually no grey in my house. Now I love it when it is mixed with other colors but come on it is grey walls, grey couches and chairs, grey dishes and vases, grey rugs, grey paintings. Yes I know people love it so I give. It is your space and I really do respect your space. I love black and my love comes from it by my obsession with antique and vintage black and white prints with black frames. I would be lost without color and lots of it. What would this world be if we were all the same..... Boring. God Bless.
