Wow, glad to see you trying traditional Chinese breakfast. This is a list about food and dishes that you ordered. 油條 (Fried bread stick), 豆漿 (soy milk), 豆腐腦 (tofu pudding or tofu jelly soup. The tofu soup usually goes with a sesame biscuit or sesame bread. People tear the biscuit into pieces by hands and soak in the broth. Also, if you like the flavor of cilantro, you can ask for some and put in the tofu jelly soup). 耳朵眼炸糕 (Ear-hole fried cake is a fried rice cake with red bean paste. It is sweet).
Greetings from England, thanks for the great video. When I went to Tianjin a couple of years ago, we went and had breakfast just outside the Nanshi Food Mall. Dough sticks are the best .
John Thomas Abroad, thanks for the reply. I’ve been to China multiple times, but only to Tianjin for one day and fell in love with it instantly, I hope to return in the future.
Ohh yeah deep fried dough sticks dipped in soy milk and the tofu pudding looked delish John, They were so friendly too but of course you have to to have Starbucks coffee lol Thanks for taking us with you. 😍
Hello John, really respect your openness to the local food in Tianjin. I am a southerner from Guangxi province and spent 4 years in Xi'an, which is a Northern city that has similar northern-style food, just like the second one you had, the tofu soup. Personally, the consistency of the tofu soup seems not that good. And I know a few foreign friends, who really don't like the slimy texture. But yeah, hat off to your adventurous spirit and open heart to appreciate the local cuisine.
@@JohnThomasAbroad In the year 1142 CE during the Sung dynasty, a famous patriotic general (岳飛 Yue Fei) and his son were framed by a treasonous minister and his wife (Qin Hui 秦檜). After the emperor killed the general and his son, angry citizens made the doubled dough to represent the couple of traitors, threw it into hot boiling oil for punishment, and that became the ubiquitous popular breakfast item all over China. That was the earliest doughnut. People in different provinces have their favourite ways to eat it. That's for you to investigate.
Awesome John Thomas! The closet thing to the Chinese fried dough sticks are churros which one can find in the west. One theory was Europe took the idea and made their own version of 油条. Have this fried dough stick in my country too and we dip it into sweeten black coffee.🙂

China invented the "dunkin' of donuts" For any east coast Americans it is just liked "fried dough" you get at the beach in the summer. Only thing to remember about Chinese breakfast is BYOC (coffee). They don't mind : ) Really good video. I'm enjoying your series.

You're brave to try the tofu dish, it's not even a likeable dish in all Chinese regions, and I can totally see how westerners can be easily turned off by the texture and colour. One of my fav Chinese breakfast is fried dough dipped in sweetened soy milk, very pure and simple flavour, so good especially on cold winter days. Another is crepe+egg+crisp+fried dough+hotdog+... all rolled into one pancake thingy, 煎饼果子, a street food I believe originated in Tianjin, the one you ate as breakfast in your 50RMB challenge video, I'd eat it for breakfast, lunch, dinner, and all snacks in between 🙂
Oh the fried doughnut thingy with red bean inside is called 油炸糕, jam packed with high carb high fat and high sugar, all the wonder stuff to kill whatever trendy diet you're on 😁

Most of the breakfast foods that are popular in Pennsylvania are so gross to me (sunny side up eggs, sausage, scrapple-who would eat this; it literally has “scrap” in the title-and blueberry pancakes), so I hated breakfast growing up. The more opportunities I’ve had to see the way other cultures approach breakfast, the more I like it. I don’t like American donuts, but I’d definitely try a Chinese donut. And the fried…pastry? looks way too greasy in this instance, but I do love red bean paste.
