Some good discussion being had, and like Joseph humbly acknowledged towards the end, we have so much more we can know about God, only knowing the bit that we know or can understand.
I am tending to look at translations, and even manuscripts, as pieces in a jigsaw puzzle. We can't just take one piece and think we have the whole picture. All pieces are related and help to complete the picture.
For example, in 2 Corinthians 2:17, the common debate is over whether "corrupt" or "peddle" is the right translation, especially from KJVOists.
Neither by themselves is the correct or full/complete translation, showing the depth of meaning of the Greek.
Together though, they are complete. They give a fuller picture, corrupting or diluting something in order to peddle it for profit.
Just as in 1 Corinthians 7:1, it says it is good for a man not to "touch a woman" in the KJV and some other English translations, whereas some have something along the lines of "have sexual relations with a woman". Both can be correct together. The Greek word used for touch in this verse is also used to describe people wanting to touch Jesus to be healed for example in Mark 8:22. It doesn't mean they wanted relations with Him, just to touch Him. Which is the correct rendering though? Does it rely on context? Yes and no, possibly. Let me illustrate. It is good for unmarried men to not go around touching women, as it could eventually lead to misunderstandings or even fornication, or to rumours being spread or gestures mistakenly interpreted. So it's best to avoid that kind of contact, wouldn't you agree? As a married man myself, who knows the pitfalls, I could see the case being made for this kind of advice being given to say youth or even men entering marriage or in even more scenarios, though trying also to avoid legalism, making it a salvation issue.
Another example is I saw a video suggesting that the command, "thou shalt not steal" actually means to "kidnap". So, it's okay to take someone's car, or to rob a bank? Of course not. It's about the depth of the meaning. To steal also includes kidnapping, stealing people, but it is not exclusive to that, it includes petty theft as well.
When we try to get just the one word for word translation of Greek and Hebrew, we miss out on the entirety of the depth of meaning available and included in this. Jesus demonstrated this when He taught on adultery, even looking on a woman to lust after her, and how that relates to the 10th Commandment not to covet.
Ambiguity in a word doesn't have to mean obscurity or unclear, it also can mean that there can be several related meanings, several ways that something can be interpreted or translated that are all correct, but could also depend on context, then also obviously what manuscripts you are deriving your translation from. Do we throw away portions of the TR because we have older manuscripts that omit them? No. Do we throw away the older manuscripts because they differ in some things? No. Think of jigsaw puzzle pieces. Each has a bit sticking out and piece cut out that it doesn't look complete by itself. Because it relates to another piece.
One final example, the passage in Exodus 12 in the Passover, and in particular verse 42, where the KJV has the rendering "observed" for the night of Passover. In English, the word observe can have several meanings, one of them being to watch, which some translations have as the rending.
Then Jesus told His disciples to watch and pray while they were in Gethsemane. This wasn't just a random word He used. Every law-abiding Jew would have been keeping watch that night, and He was encouraging His disciples to fulfil the law in an indirect way. The fact they failed in part was to show that only He could truly fulfil the law completely and it shows why we need Him. That's one of the meanings or connections, there are other immediate contextual meanings as well, but yes, when we close our eyes to one meaning, we can miss the whole.
(And fyi, no, I'm not Hebrew Roots movement, just well read, so I'm not saying we should observe or keep watch Passover night, just making that one connection between the Exodus account and Jesus' actions)

Wow, it's great to hear from a South Korean on Mark's channel, which I watch often.
I'm also a South Korean from South Korea and was once involved in the KJVO movement and am now an ex-KJVO. There are currently a lot of divisions in Korea over the KJV. There are currently three main KJVO groups in Korea that are hostile to each other. (In addition to Lee and Jung, whom Mr. Jo mentioned, there is Yoon's group. Yoon's translation first appeared last year, and now Yoon's group is the common enemy of Lee and Jung's group, and now pastors who use Jung's translation have formed a council to investigate Yoon's translation), and they are slandering each other, saying that their group has a better translation of the KJV. It's very tragic. Mr. Jo's experiences and feelings regarding the KJV are very similar to mine, and I sympathize with him and pray for his future studies and ministries. Thank you both for sharing your stories.

In my experience with KJV only'ism, I didn't know it was possible to have true faith, and have assurance of God's salvation, unless I had a flawless copy of all scripture. That is how my faith was framed for me. So, if I had gone to South Korea, as a missionary, I would have to resort to my KJV in order to teach people to have confidence in God, and have faith. I believe the biggest issue in all of this is this.... Many people begin the gospel with the KJV, and belief that it is flawless. Then, once a person knows they have a flawless text, they can have the ability to truly have faith in the gospel. So it's the KJV + the gospel, that enables a person to be saved.
On one hand, demanding to have a flawless copy of all scripture in your hand, in order to have confidence in God, is a bit like doubting Thomas who demanded to hold perfection in his own hands in order to believe. The truth is, that if all you have is the gospel of John....you can have true faith, and be saved....it could have a couple flaws....it could have a coffee stain....and you could still read that, believe that, and find the truth of the gospel... And until KJV only people realize this, they will always resort to the KJV as their baseline for being able to trust God. Take that away from them, and they will doubt God. Hopefully they never wake up in 1610....because that could undo their entire faith.

The exact same thing is true in Brazil. There are both TR onlyists who read the old portuguese translation based on the TR (Almeida Corrigida Fiel, for ex) AND people who actually read one of the Portuguese translations of the KJV, like the BKJ1611 (Bíblia King James 1611).
With the same arguments and trash talking other modern translations.
One of the reasons some prefer the BKJ to the ACF, funnily enough, is because it uses less archaic Portuguese than the ACF.
Yeah, that's the super funny thing to me! The arguments go backwards when convenient!
A friend of mine from Portugal said the quotations I supplied from TBS Brazil's revision of Almeida read like modern Portuguese.
@@markwardonwords I love your videos. Have you looked into the Reina-Valera translation history at all? It was translated from the MT and TR to Spanish in 1569 at the cost of being anathemised by the Catholic Church, fleeing to Switzerland from the Spanish inquisition.
It has had official revisions done periodically (1602, 1862, 1909, 1960, 1995, 2009, 2011, 2015) to keep it current and is a marked departure from the Alfonsina from 1280 which is a translation form the Vulgate.
This is the de-facto standard for protestants in the Spanish speaking world and no one (that I know) has ever claimed the infallibility the KJV onlyists claim for their modern translation of 1611.

Someone please correct me, if I'm wrong on this.
I live in Korea. I am not Korean. I'm under the impression something similar is happening here in that the main translations of the Bible use really old or hard to understand Korean and so the newer KJV versions are easier to understand. When I first arrived in Korea people often studied the Bible in English because learning English was easier than the old Korean.
I bought my mother in law a korean kjv bible, but KJV onlism is not part of our household.
So thankful for this episode. I went to Crown and really praise the Lord for my time there. While I have grown in my understanding of Bible translation since those years, my time there was invaluable to me. 😉 I appreciate the attitude and respect given for those that you disagree with! Praise God for His Goodness and faithfulness!

So I attend a KJVO church myself. And honestly sometimes I like to read through the Translators preface that is in many of the Bible’s in the pews. It serves as a good reminder that the translators reiterate 3-4 times they clearly weren’t for their translation to be the final translation ever, as their intention was just to make a “better” translation than what was currently available.
But anyway, this week I noticed we had an American Bible Society edition in a pew. I was reading through it, and in the back it had an extensive list in excess of 500 “Archaic and Obsolete words” that this KJV itself was providing clarity on its meanings.
This specific KJV edition itself was against KJVO lol.
What a testimony. His statement about being closest to the cross, when he was abandoned by the people he loved, is profound. Great interview. So glad the Lord placed this channel in my path, as my walk had me introduced into KJVO church during pandemic. I'm so grateful bc the church was the only one opened during that time. Yet it taught me about the danger and division this group is causing to the body of Christ, and I've helped a few others thru my experiences. This channel was a huge help for me to walk away and warn others.
I'm so glad! I could 100% imagine a circumstance in which I had to attend and serve faithfully in a KJV-Only church. As long as I could sign the doctrinal statement, I could join. And I regard attending church and being a member as more important than this issue.
What frustrates me so much is when someone tells me the KJV is without error, I have asked what is the perfect Bibles before 1611 and almost without fail, people do not tell me and make fun of the question and imply I'm idiotic for asking it..................... You also mention "mansions"......so often I see people today have a mental framework of "Gone with the Wind".....and it is NOT like that.

@@maxboucher86 Tyndale said that "charity" was not the correct translation of "agape" in 1 Corinthians 13. He lays out a very specific case for why in the early 1500's, the word "charity" did not mean the same thing as "agape".....Hilariously, 500 years ago, he said people use the word charity just like they do today.....and 500 years later he still rings true that charity is not equal to "agape"....
Not just in South Korea, but the KJV only-ism mindset is also in many Japanese churches! It’s amazing how many different church leaders over here will cling to just a single translation…

I sometimes wonder if it would be more beneficial, especially for memorization, to only have one Bible version? But, I have noticed that some of the NT allusions to the OT Scripture passages are not necessarily word-for-word. Even when quoting the Bible off by heart it's maybe not the words themselves, but the spirit in which they are conveyed is what's important, I think.
Correct, the KJV New Testament does not quote it's own Old Testament....which means that the KJV translators did not consider the New Testament to be quoting from the KJV Old Testament.....which means that the New Testament does not quote from the KJV when it quotes from scripture.... So if the KJV New Testament is allowed to quote the Old Testament and change it from what the KJV says, why can't we quote from Bibles that word things differently?
KJV onlyist's won't care about an argument like this, but for myself it does matter. It's a reminder that I'm reading a translation of the scripture, and it is not the original.

"KJV Onlyism" Is (respectfully) just another form of identity politics. I'd argue, if any flag be plant, its in the KJV because of its rooted history as "the standard". I think that is true for the group, but not for all individuals within the group. Many, many people sincerely believe that the KJV is the best translation and haven't really paid attention to any arguments pro or con.

Unicorn occurs in the KJV because of the Vulgate (unicornis), and the Septuagint has monokeros (one-horn). The KJV translators made a guess at what the animal was. Whatever it is, the animal is presented as a big one.
Yes, the KJV translators had to guess, and they based their guess on the Vulgate/LXX prior translations. Nevertheless, there shouldn't be any uncertainty today as to what the Hebrew word Re'em means. It refers to an impressively large, but now-extinct species of wild bull.

I'm seeing a push in the Northern Plains Indep. Baptist Churches to reinforce the "Translation for the English Speaking people" concept. One new church plant has that as part of its charter, one church has invited Oulette for later this year (if he's up to it), and my church's fellowship passed out Oulette's book among its churches 6 months ago. The KJVO push is definitely building momentum

Regarding the question of "unicorn," I think you were wise not to identify that as an example of a false friend. King James' royal coat of arms contains a unicorn of the same kind we picture today. That was what was that word meant in the early 1600s. There was already some skepticism by that time that the unicorn might not be real (see Shakespeare's Tempest 3.3, lines 1585-6). They were aware of the rhinoceros (and offer rhinoceros as a possible alternative reading at Isaiah 34:7). Books on nature/wildlife at the time distinguished between the two animals. Moreover, ultimately, the Re'em is not one-horned animal, as can be proven from Deuteronomy 33:17. For what it's worth, I not only have a booklet-length blog post (under the tag "unicorns"), but I was part of the only (to my knowledge) debate specifically on the question of whether the KJV translation of "unicorn" is correct. That debate is over at Standing for Truth.

Reading the Bible in Hebrew has taught me that I don’t really know Hebrew. It’s a challenge.
Hey Brother Mark, another awesome conversation! I attended PCC in the 90s and happened to study under Dr. Johnson. At the time when I graduated (1995), Dr. Johnson didn't seem so dogmatic about the KJV as he would after the release of the VHS PCC produced a couple of years later. Dr. Johnson, Dr. Mullinex, and a couple other professors basically taught us the Byzantine Priority theory (though they usually referred to the Majority/Byzantine Text as the TR). They were very clear that the secondary inspiration was ridiculous and even invited non-TR advocates to guest lecture on occasion.
Unfortunately a lot of what came afterward was the result of a break in fellowship between PCC and Bob Jones University over the issue of the Critical Text. If I remember right, some BJU professors began to criticize and attack PCC for refusing to utilize the CT in their seminary. So PCC filmed a documentary promoting the TR in response and sent it to fundamentalist churches throughout the country. I wonder how much of an impact this had?
But this is why I'm often a little sensitive to the Collective's efforts to combat KJVO advocates. I think a lot of innocent TR and Majority Text advocates get lumped together with KJVO by the Critical Text community.
I wasn't at BJU when the incident happened, but I've heard from someone associated with BJU at the time that the BJU professors did not initiate criticism or attacks on KJV/TRO advocates. And when they responded to the KJV/TR advocates, it was in an academic manner, not personal attacks. Especially, Dr. Stewart Custer, who became a major target of KJVO advocates, consistently maintained a gentle and kind demeanor towards those who unfairly maligned his character.
It's noteworthy that some who identified themselves as "professors" failed to differentiate between the TR and the Byzantine text. It suggests a lack of readiness to engage in academic discussions at this level. The TR and the Byzantine text are distinctly different; the TR, in particular, holds no value in textual criticism since it is not a collection of Greek manuscripts but rather a published edition of the Greek New Testament. You are probably aware that there are multiple editions of the TR, and no two editions are exactly the same.
It's important to acknowledge the historical fact that the collective challenge to the orthodox understanding of bibliology was instigated by the KJVO/TR advocates. Historical fundamentalists/conservative evangelicals were compelled to respond to these misinformed arguments to defend the truth.
Also, the silence of the "innocent TR and Majority Text advocates" is really disheartening to me. If they believe the KJV is not a perfect translation, they must raise their voice against the extreme KJVO people who mislead tens of thousands of people, including people who don't speak English, by teaching that the KJV is a perfect translation.
For instance, Dr. Maurice Robinson who is the foremost advocate of the Byzantine text has repeatedly emphasized that the KJVO position is wrong and must be rejected.
@@CarySarangChurch First, you're being awfully dogmatic, condescending, and judgemental for someone admits that you didn't witness what happened at the time firsthand.
Second, my "professors" didn't fail to differentiate between the TR and Majority Texts because they didn't know the difference but because they saw the differences between the two to be minor and generally irrelevant.
Third, it's just as important to acknowledge the historical fact that conservative scholars have the tendancy to overreact after years of being marginalized by mainstream institutions (as well as many leading preachers and scholars who genuinely DID lead many denominations and schools into liberal theology).
I agree with you (and the Collective) that KJV advocates are often guilty of being misguided, mean-spirited, and ill-informed, but I think it's important for everyone to understand WHY they cling so strongly to their viewpoint: they were and are rightly concerned that a loose style of bibliology inevitably leads people down the slippery slope of liberal theology to the point where much of "Christianity" today would be horrifying to the Apostles and other believers living in the first century.
While I wholeheartedly agree that a church that uses the NIV isn't any more likely to "go woke" than a church that preaches from the KJV, it is absolutely true that many of the same scholars of the past and present who question the reliability of the TR ALSO end up bringing the trustworthiness of scripture itself into question. And THAT is what terrifies and enrages the KJVO proponents.
Lastly, TR and Byzantine advocates REGULARLY debate and criticize the KJVO movement in public forums such as RUclips. Look up channels such as Biblical Studies and Reviews, Matthew Everhard, and Dwayne Green for yourself to see Byzantine/Majority Text advocates who have been doing exactly that with a gentle spirit and persuasive, biblically sound arguments.
Oh, and Dr. Robinson is the absolute GOAT among living scholars who buck the mainstream with a Christ-like spirit and well-researched positions. He treats ignorant claims by KJVO advocates exactly the same way he handles ignorant claims by Critical Text advocates!
@@allenfrisch Dr. Robinson has proved that there are over 1,800 differences between the TR editions and the Byzantine text:
"The overall text of these early printed editions differs from the Byzantine Textform in over 1800 instances, generally due to the inclusion of weakly supported non-Byzantine readings. Since the Receptus form of text does not provide an accurate reproduction of the common Greek manuscript tradition, the present edition strives to rectify that situation by presenting the readings of the Byzantine Textform in a more precise manner." (Preface, THE NEW TESTAMENT IN THE ORIGINAL GREEK: Byzantine Textform 2005)
According to the KJV/TR only people, over 1,800 instances are not minor or irrelevant at all. Did you know that Dr. Robinson's Byzantine text doesn't include the Johannine Comma in 1 John 5:7? Most KJV/TR advocates get really angry at the Byzantine text when they discover it. So, mixing the two texts doesn't seem reasonable to me. As scholars, the PCC professors should have made the distinction between the two really clear.
The reason I responded your comment was that I felt obligated to defend the BJU professors whom you described as the people who initiated the controversy with PCC. You said, "If I remember right, some BJU professors began to criticize and attack PCC for refusing to utilize the CT in their seminary." The truth is the other way according to what I have heard from the people who were at BJU during the controversy. Many professors at BJU became unjustly vilified and attacked by so many KJV only people because of the KJV videos PCC produced.

I have abandoned what you might call "not so loose style of bibliology" (aka a perfect preservation through one English translation/Greek text) and my faith in God's word has ever been growing. There are hosts of fundamentalists and conservative evangelicals who would defend the authority of the Bible with their lives while holding to what you call "loose style of bibliology."
I haven't been aware of the TR advocates who debate and criticize the KJVO advocates. I will check them out. I have known many TR only people personally, but none of them have criticized or pointed out the dangers of the KJV Onlyism. That's why I said what I said in the previous comment.

So maybe the individual people are not the same in Spanish? I’ll have to check the Greek. Sometimes the same word gets split because of dialect issues. Joshua and Jesus were the same in Hebrew but over 2500 years, spellings read adjusted as languages changed.

Why can't the KJV-lovers just do some research and FIX the false friends, etc, and keep the flowery poetic language.
If they want that archaic English, let them have it and just fix the misunderstandings.

The reason I ask is because while listening to the Bible, the KJV holds my attention better.
I confess a little fuzziness in my memory, but there are versions like the Simplified KJV, the KJVER, the KJV21 (?), and others that I believe have done what you describe.

In my ignorance, I am not quite sure why these lunatics chose to be so devoted to the KJV in the first place.
The KJV was a governmental action that removed "tyrant" and commentary from the Geneva Bible. I don't understand why these poor souls wouldn't be more devoted to Geneva or Wycliffe Bibles. Aren't their sacrifices, Tisdale martyrdom and devotion to the cause more valuable then a government approved KJV? I don't understand them.
I suspect, like myself, people don't realize the extent of the problem. Someone needs to create a PDF file of all the false friends and archaic words and their 1611 meanings. In fact, such a dictionary should be added to the KJV as an appendix, right after the name pronunciation pages. The longer the list becomes the more people will see the need to update.

The KJV gave us the 'Baptists' in 1646 and 1689. Many wont let KJV go, because it makes their position on water baptism less potent and them less differentiable.

John Smyth and Thomas Helwys, the co-founders of the Baptist movement, had already moved to Holland and developed the core Baptist doctrines before the KJV made it to print. In fact, Helwys produced a Baptist confession in 1611, the same year that the KJV came out. The later Baptist confessions you mentioned were far more impacted by the Westminster Confession of Faith than they were by the KJV.
Why not teach about how great the KJV is?
He has said that NUMEROUS times. He believes it’s another beautiful translation. He has never said not to read it. You might watch a few videos here and you will hear Mark say as much. We need to not shut our minds off to newer translations. Peace 🙏
