Saw this show live on Broadway with Eva Noblezada in the female lead. This song and its introduction in absolute silence and mostly darkness with the harmonies was absolutely breathtaking, emotional, and goosebump-inducing. I cried a time or two.
The performance of this song was fantastic. And this was not the first time gospel was used. He is not taking creative liberties, but drawing from early performances of this song. I remember seeing this at the Kennedy Center in the mid 90s, and this performancestors was familiar to what I experienced. Inspired performance good sirs!
Oh my goodness. I thought no one can do better than JOJ's performance of this song. Then I found Hugh and my opinion changed suddenly! Haha. That last chorus was crazy! What an epic voice this man has.
I know, right! If you'd like another good version, have a look at Anthony Warlow's version. Granted, it's a studio recording, not a live performance, but fantastic none the less. As far as live performances go, this is *hands down* the best version I've ever seen. I love how in the last chorus, Hugh just rips right into it. Freakin' *awesome*!
Fantastic performance. I've just been to see this in The West End and this song moved me to tears. I now can't hear it without seeing the harrowing faces of those young innocent children 'who's only crime was being born'. I find it hard to listen to this version however with people whooping, cheering and hollering in the background who don't get the poignancy of this song and what it's actually about.
It doesn't matter how long it has been since I first saw this number performed in the production. It doesn't matter that I know the message already. It is impossible to get through watching a performance of this without the waterworks being turned on. The real life children this song was written for are in their late 50's and early 60's now. For those whose fathers never came for them, I shudder to think how their lives transpired.
I went to see miss Saigon Last year and this was one of my favourite songs in the whole performance. I can't wait until it comes on tour I hope it comes on tour near me
You can also get the 25th anniversary recording on Amazon, etc. He is part of that cast as well. He has a fantastic voice and dramatically strong throughout the show.
There are so many different approaches to this song. Pleading, remorseful, angry, it doesn’t matter the tone. The message comes through with truth each and every time. These children were thrown away by their country never to know their fathers or families on distant shore and were taught to live in shame. 50+ years on and the hurt remains.
@Dave Smith The US interfering in this war was a mistake, but I don’t see how this makes the song Racist. From my understanding this song is about the injustice of the American GIs leaving their sons and daughters to fend for their lives after they left the country.
I remember going to see this with Lucy and Tom Moore in about 1992. Peter policarpu was not able to make the show and his understudy played this part of John. Chris and I would always make a good evening out with Virgin restaurant and West End deals for shows.
Some people consider this to be too gospel, but I'd just like to add a) what wrong with that? and b) that I don't hear that much difference between this version and earlier versions
To answer your question… because it detracts from the lyrics. Sing it straight - like Peter Polycarpou did - and the focus is on the lyrics. Add in all the vocalisation, and that becomes the draw.
Vocally, my favourite version of "Bui Doi". Plus you know, a decent eyeful of Niall Sheehy (left hand group on the right in the front row in the black suit) doesn't hurt either.
When I saw this show the screen showed real clips of the children in crowded, makeshift orphanages. It’s heartbreaking. It’s a solemn song. The audience shouldn’t shout and clap
Why do people clap and scream during the song? I'm a performer and that's not only rude but also very distracting to the performers. This isn't a rock concert, hold your applause until the end please.
+Lauren Kazlo I don't like the clapping and screaming during the song either, but this is a promotional outdoor performance so it is kind of like a rock concert :p Still don't like the screaming though because it makes it harder to hear the singers. But I can live with it at this kind of show
Lol thought the Hugh references in the Comments were to Jackman but this is Maynard. Got Maynard cousin/Aunty a lautre cotay dostralie 👸🏻 How's about that, eh?!
This man has a phenomenal voice! However, in the spirit of this sing, I do think the riffing was out of place. I think the most complete version I've seen is that of Peter Polycarpou. Vocally Peter is great but his acting out of the song is timeless.
This song just chokes me up. Yes, the USA really messed up Vietnam, but two wrongs don't make a right. It's a fact that multi-racial children in Vietnam are badly discriminated against.
Does the audience not know what the show is about and more specifically, what this song is about? This video can be used as an example of the word "inappropriate."
+Kyle Campbell you are right Kyle I went to see this last week with him in it and I was looking forward to the powerful emotional song but what I heard instead was a Mariah Carey style pop song, very dissapointed
I wonder if you would have said preacher if his skincolour would have been pale instead of dark? You could have said that he is showing off his vocal capacity instead of being in the caracter. He has a great voice and hits the high notes with skill and perfection but they are his choice because they are not written in the score.
Samuel Karlberg You may wonder all you wish, but you're doing this performer a disservice by reducing him to only his skin colour. I focused on his performance. Do you know the plot of the musical? Do you think he should be above scrutiny because his skin color is dark instead of pale? Should I be wondering if you are presuming my race in your comment?
tahitiantreats This is not the whole musical it´s just numbers taken out of it so being so conservative on how the character should sing is hard to understand for me. I don´t care about your skin colour or his even if I have a tendency of enjoying how afro-americans sings when they are as good as he is. That is something I base on their vocal qualities and on my personal taste rather then on how they look. If you are an african-american I think you need to question your choice of description of his stage presents even more then I do. There is nothing wrong with being a preacher but in this case I thought you said that based more on him then on the performance.
Samuel Karlberg They are in costumes for a reason. Since you told me what you think I need to question, perhaps "then" I should return the favor. Focus on yourself rather than others and think before you label. You painted my comment as racist, when you were in the wrong. That's a really shitty thing to do, because it poisons others' views of my words whether your label is fair or not; you should apologize. Further, you should know "I don't care even if" sounds a bit like "some of my best friends are but". Just saying. He is a professional performer: his "presence" on stage deserves constructive criticism, which helps performers improve. It's up to him to decide whether to find my words useful.
Can a person with a similar background give a comment that can be considered as degrading on someone? I think so. I am a singer myself and I think you were more then hush on this guys performance. Everyone should value what they write here on youtube and as long as you seem to think that the preacher thing has nothing to do with his visual appeerance then I find no need to appologies to you.
Such a beautiful performance ruined by the untimely appreciation of the crowd. People really need to learn some theatre etiquette 🤦🏻♀️ Granted you are excited by the performance but be respectful of the performer and others near you. Like, I spend money to go see professionals performs, not to listen to some unruly ugly screaming 😮💨
ridiculous at the end. Stick to the score. Keep it simple, powerful and pure. The message should be more important than misplaced, style-breaking vocal gymnastics.
I absolutely disagree, I don't think it messes up the message at all unless of course, you think black pastors never get their message across. But of course to each their own
I did not mean racist accusations. I genuinely meant do you not think black pastors don't get there message across they use a similar style of preaching that's more emotive. I did not accuse anyone of racism I asked if you don't think black pastors get their message accros
Worst version I have ever heard the vocal gymnastics at the end turns the song from a very powerful and serious message in to something like an audition for x factor. This is not supposed to be a pop song that the audience scream and cheer along to. Unfathomable.
This song gives me goosebumps!!!
best bui-Doi for me. amazing,
Me, too. 最高。

Absolutely the best Bui Doi performance ever seen!
Hugh Maynard is my favourite John by a country mile, his rendition of this song leaves me in tears every time.
Holy crap! I've been in love with this song for 30+ years. This gentleman blows it away! How did I miss this? Wow!
Hugh Maynard is amazing... just love his voice, and he is such a nice guy too! :)
Absolutely amazing, Hugh Maynard was unbelievably good!

This is my favourite version. JOJ's is pretty, but this gives me chills.

Chills, wow. I’ve loved this song for years, though never seen the show, or seen this man, what a performance, he really gave it all.
Just saw Hugh Maynard perform this in the Prince Edward Theatre. Electrifying! And that chord at the end is just spectacular!
OMG That makes me cry
I would love to hear this as a studio recording, without the screaming, clapping, and other distractions that ruin this amazing performance!

Wow! World class vocal gymnastics right there. Awesome!
Amazing.
Sensational performance by Hugh Maynard!

6 years later and still gives me chills
His performance is amazing, but how can you be clapping and screaming? Think about the lyrics once...
The intention of these characters is good. they don’t actually realize how racist they are being. That’s what makes it such an interesting song
@@maayanlev4269 how is this song racist? I am ignorant, please explain
@Dave Smith The US interfering in this war was a mistake, but I don’t see how this makes the song Racist. From my understanding this song is about the injustice of the American GIs leaving their sons and daughters to fend for their lives after they left the country.

amazing!! Incredible!!!
You are amazing Hugh Maynard!
한국인 뮤덕 손
this is the best acted i've seen though, even with the riffs
I remember going to see this with Lucy and Tom Moore in about 1992. Peter policarpu was not able to make the show and his understudy played this part of John. Chris and I would always make a good evening out with Virgin restaurant and West End deals for shows.
o.O Damn. His voice is good !!!
Wow..goosebumps...bravo
Hugh Maynard is amazing
Yes love it
The best Bui Doi EVER
Wow hugh well done. Proud of you xx
love this version any way saw all of these once but some of them twice as well last year in fact
3:38 oh my god
Some people consider this to be too gospel, but I'd just like to add a) what wrong with that? and b) that I don't hear that much difference between this version and earlier versions
I always saw it as a type gospel song.
To answer your question… because it detracts from the lyrics. Sing it straight - like Peter Polycarpou did - and the focus is on the lyrics. Add in all the vocalisation, and that becomes the draw.
WOWWW 😵😵😵
Wow... This guy can really drag a lyric. Rhythm is a part of music, sir. You can't just ignore it.
When I saw it in Chicago we had an African American sing the part. I can never see anyone else singing it. This was close
Sick!!!!
Vocally, my favourite version of "Bui Doi".
Plus you know, a decent eyeful of Niall Sheehy (left hand group on the right in the front row in the black suit) doesn't hurt either.
He's in a league of his own.
OMG saw Kurt kansly in there! WOW!
yes quite a lot of people did it the guy who plays Chris is some where also you have got Jon Scott Clark in this

I am also a performer, but I couldn't disagree more!!! I find things like cheering and clapping encouraging!!!
I couldn't agree more
This kinda is like a concert that's the purpose most the performers love it as its a diffrence atmosphere they love the cheering and clapping. X
Lauren Kazlo Totally agree!!!! That is a very American thing to do. I see it now it has made its way across the pond.
Imagine if the crowd had decent etiquette. You guys wait for the song to end before you start clapping and screaming.

Those camps he was talking about had the children dismantling landmines with a knife and they were told to reap the harvest their fathers had sown.

To be clear - I am asking because he is amazing
Good but Peter polycarpou as original john is amazing, much more simple vocal but so moving.

Too much backphrasing though...
Backphrasing?
Fabulous performance, ruined by the screaming and applauding in the middle!!
Oh another baritone song taken by a tenor 😕
I feel your pain Andrew.......a kind of one-way plundering that has been going on for years.
First off, the song already had a Bb in it, so calm yourselves. And 2nd, hoes are just mad cause he belted D5 and hoes can't
