Having heard this song though and seeing all the hate it created towards Manizha, I want to support her with all my heart. As a Russian woman, I am ashamed of the barbaric behaviour of my co-citizens. Unfortunately, xenophobia and homophobia are huge in Russia and it's getting worse as it is fuelled by the government. So yeah, I don't feel bad that the tables were turned, and that we concured the land to bring pice to our borders. Btwnever treated it as a colony. I’m Russian and I like Manizha’s song for Eurovision, because it’s partly in Russian and inspired by Russian folk music. I think Eurovision is the contest where European nations should share their own culture, that’s why I’ve always supported contestants who sing in their mother tongue even if I don’t understand the meaning of song. It’s true, a lot of Russian people don’t like the fact that Manizha goes to Rotterdam with this song, but it’s completely wrong to say that the main and only reason of it - Russian nationalism and misogyny. Firstly, Manizha was compared to Little Big, nobody else was expected to represent Russia this year but this music band. Russians were longing to see Little Big in Rotterdam, because their single “UNO” became a hit. Secondly, Manizha’s music is definitely not typical for a Eurovision contestants from Russia and it’s targeted at young people, who hardly watch Eurovision, to tell the truth. So, there are a lot of another very important reason why a part of Russian audience doesn’t support Manizha and her song. Some people didn’t like Manizha’s nationality, but, once again, it’s incorrect to say ALL Russian Manizha’s haters don’t support her just because of it. Unfortunately, this wrong point was main in this video and this has unfairly worsened the image of Russia and Russian people.

For me her performance was very eye-opening. I’m a lesbian from Finland so I’ve learned to think that basically all Russians hate gay people and don’t care if women face domestic abuse. But seeing her perfom made me remember that, you know, it’s a big country. There are a lot of conservative people, but there are all kinds of other people there as well and it’s not right for me to stereotype Russians that way. The fact that someone is Russian says nothing about their values or personality.

Time for Russia to do some self reflecting from the voices of its youth - Heres to a win for Manizah and change in the misogynist Russian state!

Let's not mix things here - the Russian and then Soviet women got all their rights straight after the revolution, over 100 years ago. The state was always supportive and promoting women - from the best childcare to education opportunities, healthcare and all kind of help which is uknown to many Western women until now, let alone 50 years ago. The problem is that the culture is still patriarchic in many ways and the angst of " what will people say" dictates to many women, especially less educated or those from smaller towns ,the rules of conduct. That's exactly what Manizha is talking about.

I feel bad not only for Manizha, but for Russian society that hates her because of her ethnicity. I'm not Russian, I'm Vietnamese, but I was born in Russia and I identify myself as Russian. People state that Manizha shouldn't represent Russia in Eurovision because she is from Tadzhikistan, and I find it extremely offensive that neither I nor Manizha can be Russian man/woman and represent Russian Federation. It's a pure racism. I think that not or not only blood and DNA make people Russian. Manizha deserves to be called a strong Russian woman, but not those filthy racists that bully her.

cool but multiculturalism and diversity to the extreme can result into balkanization.
Russia because it was an empire says a lot of nonsense when it comes to politics. this is why the rest of Eastern countries don't like Russia that much.
and when it comes to ethnicity. to some extent, yes it does matter a lot.
this post racial/ethnic society is a pretty BS idea. it can only work with a select few countries in the world. not all of them.
the standard beauty for China of example will alwat be a ethnic Han Chinese.
for Russia? a slavic woman with blue eyes and blonde hair. this is just a fact.
and you said, you are Vietnamese.
you will always be Vietnamese, even if you have a Russian citizenship. sorry but this is just a fact.
I can never be a true Japanese person. only a citizen. I'm in reality a Romanian. a white person.

Manizha, I respect you soooo much! I first disliked the song, but then I started to understand what it was about and now girllll you are killing it! Being a female in itself is hard, but I can only imagine how hard it must have been to grow up in a country you are not born in. Maybe a lot of Russians don't like your song, but trust me a lot of other people do and I think you are going to do amazing in Eurovision!

There are an abundance of feminist songs in Eurovision however this is the only one that is truly empowering to me because I know this woman have had to fight to be on that stage. Doesn’t hurt that she’s incredibly animated and funny on stage c:

I'm Russian, and it was so lovely to hear a song from our country that finally had some good goddamn message, not just the pretty vocals. Manizha is amazing, I'm proud that she was representing our country this year, and I'm also so sorry for her having to face this much ridiculous bs. I'm so tired of our media portraying even tiniest bits of feminism as extremism, and this is why we need people like Manizha so damn much. We need more women empowerment, and I'm here for all of brave people who are not afraid to raise their voice 💖

In her case the problem is not the singer, or the song, or the message. The choice of who to send to Eurovision is completly in hands of the Putin state propaganda. The same propaganda that totally supports the president, the parlament and the government that adopt totally disgusting homophobic laws. Recently the Parmalat adopted a bunch of anti women laws. Her message in Eurovision was perceived as an offensive mockery not because of the singer but because of the federal television totally fake and hipocritical. The girl acts as if she didn't know she sold the soul to the devil. A real human rights activist would never ever ever participate in any state activities such as going to represent Russian homophobic government at Eurovision.

There is one second side of the medal.. Just so you may have a vague idea of just how fucked up Putin regim is. They are in need of constantly degrading European values of freedom, inclusivity and respect for human rights. They have chosen this girl and this message with a very specific purpose of building her publicly.

I voted for her in ESC 2021. I don't speak Russian so I couldn't understand the lyrics, but the message still came through very clearly. I think her song was really powerful and despite of the langauge barrier, it communicated her message beautifully. She did a great job and I honestly think Russia should be proud of her. Lots of love here from Denmark!
