I know almost nothing about the film not included in this video. But I could imagine a tremendously powerful film with this premise. A clown thrown into a camp and ordered to entertain children and convince them to go willingly into the gas chambers. Shown the consequences of defying the order - murder of the children who resist being led into the chambers. So he rationalizes to himself that if these children must die, he can at least ensure that their last moments are not ones of agony and fear. So despite it destroying him inside, he acquiesces and entertains the children as much as he can.
One of the guards laughs at his antics, and he breaks, he flies into a rage, getting in the guards face despite the guard being armed, breaking the jovial character and with ferocity lighting into the guard with a shout of "This is not for you! At the last, it is not for you!" And the guard is cowed and ashamed. Any 'comedic' scenes would be tainted with a deep sadness of knowing why they are being done, why it would be worse otherwise, and the only feeling anyone can have with regard to the holocaust - it shouldn't have happened. It must never happen again. And if the audience allows itself to ignore what is being done in the world and just 'does their job' or 'follows orders', as the guard does, it will happen again.

      Oh brother.
You have the kind of education a farmer could use for pig slop.
It's the left trying to destroy what the Founding Fathers fought for against the British-- freedom from their tyranny of the colonists. It's dumb mfers like you who are today voting for liberty thieves in the treasonous Democrat party. But treason is being reckoned with by a MAGA force not seen since George Washington's Continental Army won freedom for America in 1781.
As you have seen in the last four years the plan to destroy America by Democrats and the deep state has failed. "Covid" was the first attempt and at first fooled a lot of people but not most. And when you cheat you're not suppose to be caught. In 2020 the Democrats were caught. Now their attempts at letting in invaders at our borders is being thwarted. And a once thought of has-been is back bigger than ever.
The incompetence of the Democrat party has been freedom's saving grace. Come November you'll see the bull in your education from them. A new George Washington "dressed in orange" will be honored in the name of freedom. Thanks be to God.
You have a great day of liberty. That's what we all live for.

There are two questions here; can there be comedy about the holocaust and can there be comedy during the holocaust? Most artists would say yes, but it's very difficult to do. Mr. Lewis's answer is perhaps best when he says it was not good. It wasn't the subject matter; it was the execution of the subject matter. Twenty years later Roberto Begnini wins an Oscar for a similar themed film in "Life is Beautiful". The difficult artist/ comedian question is if you make children laugh before they are killed, are you giving thema last moment of joy or are you fooling them at there moment of termination and indirectly helping the Nazi effort? Can there ever be a time of reconciling your loss of happiness while making others happy in the future? To me, this should be the theme that the film should follow.

The video says Jerry's clown character is "forced to lead children into the gas chambers," but wasn't the story that the clown, seeing how frightened the children were, CHOSE to go with them into the gas chamber so that they wouldn't be all alone? I heard by this time in Jerry Lewis's life that he had acquired a very bad drug addiction to prescription pain killers like Percodan. This could also be a reason why he was not pleased with this film and decided not to release it. In the moment when your working and very high on pain killers you may feel that you are doing brilliant work but in reality later on when watching what he had filmed Jerry realized that this was not great work and therefore buried it deciding that it would never be released.

Nobody ever decides to understand the reason why the clown is crying while his greasepaint shows him smiling. They just think he's doing what the Nazi say they don't understand that he is just as bound to the fate of death is all those little children but yet he is doing everything he can to make their very final moments happy. It disgusts me how many people seem to think the clown is the bad guy. And yet at the end of the movie they change their tone because they didn't understand the entire presentation of the whole film cuz they don't want to bother to learn. Those people sicking me. That most of these same people who would be put in that same situation would have gladly become collaborators and happily watch innocent little children being marched in gas Chambers but a clown with a collar if he doesn't do this they will kill him and just forced to children without even giving them a chance to smile before death. This was a true movie about what true martyrdom means. That you won't let others died feeling as though their life was pointless or in vain

At least its not a Broadway musical like "The Producers" or Scottsboro Boys" - I somehow feel its a lost masterpiece that JL is too close to. He said he would do it again if he could, so I think its his performance or the sensitive subject. The truth is always sensitive if its brutally cold. They should interview everyone who was involved in the film - especially the children - to get their reactions and viewpoints. Before and ahead of its time; if you can take Schindler's List you can take this

It can't be watched as a complete film because it isn't a complete finalized film. It's very simple why the film wasn't released. The producers' rights to the novel on which the film was based had lapsed before filming began. Thus, rights needed to be renegotiated. The novel's author wasn't happy with changes Lewis and others had made to the previously approved screenplay, nor did she approve of the rough edit of the film. So she didn't renegotiate, killing the film. This was all known at the time this documentary was made, so why they instead posit that it was ultimately Lewis' decision is disingenuous.

I really don't understand what the fuss is about. What could "go wrong?" How does one make a movie "wrong." The Death of Stalin was a black comedy based on the death of history's greatest monster-- Stalin. No one said it could have "gone wrong."
Also, Schindlers list was essentially fictional. It was very loosely inspired by just a few events. The source material was a novel.
