  • ORA Good Cat is a brand new electric vehicle that was introduced in October of 2020.
In this video, I cover the ORA Haomao Good Cat and discuss why it’s another impressive affordable EV with a good chance of succeeding all over the world.
As I’ve discussed in previous videos, China is the leading EV market in the world. It has the most EV models for sale as well as the most affordable ones as well. Until EVs are available for a similar price as a gasoline equivalent one, it’s difficult for the average consumer to want to make the switch to electric. Well, the main problem currently with electric cars is that the prices are too high for what you get.
The ORA Haomao has a pretty good shot at making believers out of skeptical consumers. I’ll discuss the range, price, dimensions, and market viability of the Good Cat.
The Good Cat is the fourth EV made by Great Wall Motor. Great Wall sold over a million vehicles in 2019 and has been making cars since 1984.
The four door compact hatchback has a bit of a Volkswagen Beetle appearance. If you see a bit of Porsche in there, it might be because the Good Cat was designed by former Porsche designer Emanoel Derta.
I think it looks great. It’s distinctive and has some presence. I especially like the round headlights and the bulging fenders.
The Haomao seats up to 5 passengers. The Good Cat measures 4235mm in length by 1825 mm in width and 1596 mm in height. That’s 167 inches long by 72 inches wide by 63 inches tall. To give you an idea, that’s about the same size as the Volkswagen ID.3 or the Golf. It has a cargo capacity of 8 cubic feet (228 L) to 30 cubic feet (858 L) depending on if the rear seats are folded or not.
The Haomao has a 105 kW motor or 141 hp with 210 Nm or 155 lb-ft of torque. So it’s no speed demon but will get from zero to 50 km/hr (about 32 mph) in 3.8 seconds. The maximum speed is 93 miles per hour or 150 km/hr.
One appealing part of the Haomao is the availability of two batteries that produce good range. The standard 47.8 kWh battery pack provides 401 km or 249 miles of NEDC range. The larger 59.1 kWh battery pack provides 501 km or 311 miles of NEDC range. Since NEDC range tends to be overly optimistic, expect EPA mileage to be about 30% less. Even then, we are talking about 280 km or 174 miles for the smaller pack and 351 km or 218 miles for the larger pack.
The battery can be fast charged from 30% to 80% in 30 minutes.
The prices start at $15,800 for the base standard battery trim and $20,400 for the larger battery trim.
The Good Cat has the safety features that we expect in the US and Europe including air bags, anti-lock brakes, electronic stability control, driver assistance features like lane keep assist, road traffic sign recognition, fatigue monitor, adaptive cruise control, 360 degree camera, and even automatic parking.
The Haomao includes LED head and tailights. It also features a full digital instrument cluster and a 10.25 inch touchscreen infotainment system. The interior has a nice look of a car that should cost significantly more than the $16 to $20000 price tag.
The Good Cat is one EV that has good potential to be exported since it has many things that EV buyers in Europe, North America, and Australia are looking for. It’s got plenty of range for most people. It’s a practical hatchback style that is easy to park but has lots of room inside. The Haomao has good looks inside and out. Plus the tech is impressive. Safety should be good based on all the safety features.
It doesn’t look like it would need a lot of work to make it compliant to sell to the rest of the world. Great Wall Motors Vice President Ning Shuyong said, “Our cars are designed and built in compliance with international standards and we definitely set our sights on international markets including Europe.”
He said that Great Wall Motors is studying ways to build out its global distribution system for electric vehicles with the ultimate goal of selling to Europe, part of the company’s efforts to go global.
In fact, Great Wall already is selling one of its EVs in Latin America and India. I think for them to have success, the ORA Haomao would have to undercut the established competition in price significantly. The good news for Great Wall is that most competitors start at over $30,000 US and the ORA Good Cat should be able to be sold at a lower price than that based on how much they sell them in China.
The main concern I have for the ORA Haomao is the lack of dealer networks to sell these vehicles in Europe or North America. And are consumers going to trust a Chinese brand that they’ve never heard of in these markets? We’ll find out soon enough as some Chinese EVs are definitely starting to ship to Europe already.
What do you think of the ORA Haomao Good Cat? How much should it cost for you to consider buying it over the competition like the Nissan LEAF or Volkswagen ID.3?

It's got the 'Cute' factor, very appropriate for a down-market, city-size vehicle. The same folks that, earlier this millenium, flocked first to the New Beatle, the Mini, and then the Fiat 500, would love this today. And the affordable electric aspect, hugely widens that appeal. And in traffic-limited cities, one of these'll let the driver in the city core without charge.

The only things it needs to make it better, is more range... preferably at least like 450 miles, or they can make some hybrids as well.
That would make a lot of people who still like knowing that whenever they are ever low on fuel, they can just stop at the nearest gas station for a full up instead of having to look for a place to charge...if there are any close by, very happy and at ease.
Also, some people live in apartments with no place to charge an EV vehicle. So, having a hybrid will make the car an option for more people.😊

20-25,000 max to sell well in the United States. They should focus on a partnership with an established brand to get their foot in the door. Call up Mitsubishi, they need more product to sell in North America and already have a dealer network. Give it a 10 year 100,000 mile warranty to make people have confidence and this thing will outsell all the other “affordable” electrics that are here.

I love the look of this car, if it was available in Ireland I think I'd be queuing up. Price wise, if they can keep it around 20K euro it would be the first EV with compatible ICE prices and would sell like hot cakes.

This car, if offered in Europe and North America (including the US), could be instrumental in turning the corner toward broad EV acceptance.
Practicality, moderate but nice features, a realistic size at an affordable price. I would buy one for sure. If it sold for $18k to $22k in the US, they'd corner the market.
Unfortunately, the YS us probably the last place you will see one.

A 2-door version would look better and be less expensive to manufacture than a boring 4-door family appliance.
Moreover, I wish GreatWall would lower the price by excluding all unnecessary gadgets.
That being said, I would buy a Good Cat over a Tesla because of price. But I'm waiting for something more basic and cheaper.

The 2 main issues concerning EVs is range and price.
A plain Chevrolet Bolt is $31k at the dealership and the ones with more features are much higher putting near the Tesla.
I would likely buy a Chinese car if the price and range were good, but the question in the end is whether or not the government will allow it to be sold here.

More interesting than a stupidly priced Tesla, or the expensive stuff the other manufacturers are coming up with. Lessons to be learned if you want mass market success. It just depends on how the US and EU would tax these (then you might be talking double the price). They won't allow their markets to be flooded, which means the big companies can hold on to their monopolies.

The main problem with electric cars is not the higher price than internal combustion engines. The main problem is that it takes an hour to charge the battery, if you can find a rapid-charging station. Otherwise it can take longer. 8 hours at a typical 240 volt household current.

I look the looks and price. This reminds me of when Honda broke into the US market. They were told they did not have a chance because they were not American made. Where is Honda now? People will buy a good product for a fair price that simple and they really don’t care where it is made anymore.

I love to own one. The initial price of 15K to 20K is a bit high until it has proven itself to the designated country in respect to the road conditions, severe cold/hot climate, etc. Especially the availability of the charging system. If it has a good track record, people wouldn't mind to pay more.
