Fascinating to find this after just having read Shanty Boat and dreaming of my own similair journey someday. Loved Jessica's response to the first question regarding what Harlan did for a living and her responding that he lived very frugally and off the land where he could but noted that Harlan still needed some items that could not be found in nature such as a dentist.
"Surely refinement of living does not consist in gadgets and machinery, but in such elements as leisure, contentment, lack of confusion, small niceties." - Harlan (page 316 of Shanty Boat)

Hello Ms Jessica , My Name is Herman Grantadams I live in Winnfield Louisiana. at this time I am building a Shanty boat .It will be several months before I finish my project . I started from scratch on my Shanty boat build . My wife and I is planing on taking our first adventure on the Red River in Louisiana . I spent alot of time on the Red River because i lived near the river when i was a young man with my family in a small community called Echo Louisiana . Loved fishing and spending a lot of time near and boating on the Red River . Thank you for your time and I really enjoyed you lecture .

Mr. Grantadams, I hope you were able to complete your shanty boat and use it. I live in Alexandria myself and hope to build such a craft and travel the Red River as well. Take care.
