We think we're about halfway through the growing season. Jason has been running multiple experiments, one of which is worm casting tea. as a foliar feed. We have some initial results, but still lots of questions!

Hi guys worm casing tea seems to be a winner except for potatoes, I think you should put some molasses out for the stink bugs to see if it attracts them. With your tomatoes going yellow, I'd say it's possibly pH issue. If the ph is wrong the tomatoes can't uptake any nutrients by the roots, even if the soil has plenty of nutrients, foiliar feeding bypasses that process and that could be the difference. Can you check the ph? I probably so wrong.😅 Great experiments 💪😎🪱💩

I think you're so right !! We know the soil is 7.6-7.8 based on the Logan Labs report. There's a calcium excess, but everything else is deficient.
It has been great to have such poor soil as it's given us an opportunity to really experiment this summer.
I've put molasses out just now lol !! Awesome idea!!

@@clivesconundrumgarden My soil was deficient in literally everything but phosphorous and acidic to boot so I have been adding everything I can to boost it and get better returns out of my vineyard fruit wise.
Im doing worm tea to add soil life back to my sandy soil and add organic matter and etc stimulate the soil and add nutrients back, i add azomite to my casting teas for the micronutrients and it definitely helps with keeping the micros which have been a issue from getting out of whack.

Interesting results. Some of tge tomatoes probably have a small nutrients deficiency. If the top of the plants are green but the bottom are turning yellow, that isn't all that unusual for later in the summer. It certainly seems like the foliar feeding is helping most plants. You could do a test. If you pick 1 plant that doesn't get it and isn't looking that great and start applying the foliar feeding, does it's health improve? Thanks for the channel shout out. 👍 Have a great week. Any news on Jason's green card?

Hi Jason and Colleen, I think your idea about molasses attracting beetles has merit. Troy from the Urban Worm Company said most people put far too much molasses in their worm tea. He says you want to put just enough that it's all consumed. I think he puts a teaspoon per 5 gallons, but best to go check just to make sure. Also, as Peggy says, time of day application could be a factor. Wetting the leaves alone may have consequences (good or bad). I don't have any advice on what's happening with the tomatoes. Maybe the super hot weather accelerated their lifecycle??

Hi very details video. The yellow tomato leaves don’t look diseased to me. So it looks more like lack of water in Your heat. You have mentioned befour that you are heavy clay so mabe some compaction and baking is giving the roots a tough time. Defiantly check for pests, tiny sap sucking bugs would be most likely culprit. Eg green fly white fly mealy bugs ect. 🪳🦟🦗🐜
You mentioned two tomato plants one has straight trusses and the other has many fingers on its trusses. Would be interesting to take a side shoot cutting from the single string truss plant. Grow the cutting on using your worm tea and see if it has single trusses like the parent plant, or does it grow fingered trusses because of the worm tea. 🪱🪱🪱

This almost like a homework assignment, had to watch a couple times, will probably still forget some things.
Looks like sunscald to me on the tomatoes leaves. There is a slight curling of the leaves and a bleached out appearance along the outside edges of the leaves. Fungal disease usually has a dark central spot with yellowing boarders, and if you look closely you can see concentric rings in the dark circle. I guess it could also be a virus or bacterial issue, check to see if the new growth is affected.
Blossom end rot most of the time is either too much or not enough water, but in your case, if both tomatoes are getting the same watering and the only difference is the foliar worm tea, maybe there is a calcium deficiency.
I have 3 moskvich tomato plants in 3 different locations, the one in my new front trellis bed has blossom end rot. This is the only tomato plant out of 21 with blossom end rot. In my case I was overwatering, I cut back a bit and the blossom end rot disappeared. The effected fruit will not recover.
Worm castings, at least the castings I had tested at the UW had very high calcium levels (5019ppm). That could be why the foliar fed plants not only did not have blossom end rot, but are doing so well. Even though the calcium is not being taken up by the roots, it is getting it through the leaves. I should get the lab reports back this week on the natural vs paper bedding for the worm castings.
Sometimes you just have to play around a bit..
It is very possible the stink bugs are attracted to the sugars in the molasses, having said that, I still think it is a benefit to the plants. Cover the plants to keep the bugs out?
I am sure I am forgetting something. These are just my observations from my limited experiences.
In my opinion aerated worm tea, is a win win. Stay Well my friends!!!!

Worm castings FTW 🙂 until we got to the potatoes. 😞 All good information there guys. Blossom end rot is affected by a lack of water / Calcium deficiency, yes but with adequate fertility plants are more resilamt to the disease that is under watered, and that is what I think you are encountering there. Something you guys need to research is EColi from the worm foliar feeds and from what I know is it is possible, probably prudent to research a little on the risks and mitigation.
