Little explanation for those whose native language is not dutch. Rang is rank in English, the captain ask what his rank is, but the soldier thinks he asks for a candy which we have here in the Netherlands which is called 'Rang', which comes in a roll. So he offers a peppermint. 'Geef acht' is 'pay attention', but also 'give eight'. So the soldier thinks he has to give 8 riffles.
Some things can't be translated. For example: "Geef acht". "Give attention" is what is meant of course, but "acht" means "eight". That's why he is answering: I only have one. And "Heb jij een rang" (Do you have a rank). In Dutch a rang is a small candy. Therefore the answer: no, but I do have a peppermint.
Andre is our one truly national treasure. He has done so much over the years from big comedy shows, novelty hitsongs, he voiced the very first Animal Crackers tv show (editing videos of zoo animals and animals in the wild like they were people and were talking, very funny). He had a hugely popular radioshow which was almost anarchic in nature where he and his conconspirator did all the voices for all the characters ... and they could do it live. Then he eventually even went into straight acting on the stage and tv drama. The last few years he has presented a wonderful baking competition on TV and a show in which he together with the female judge of that baking show went on boating trips around the Netherlands to show how beautiful this country is. And the last year he delivered a very moving speech at our National War Memorial service which is held every year on the evening of May 4, in which we commemorate all those fallen in WWII and in conflicts ever since. Probably the most absurd sketch I have ever seen him do is this one (hopefully you get the English subtitles): ruclips.net/video/1ZkjSAHV9TY/видео.html
The boating trips remind me of a very nice series of boating trips by an English couple of actors who are married. It is called Great Canal yourneys. I can recommend it.
Bit difficult to translate. 'Zondernaam' really IS a last name and means 'without name' (zonder naam). When he said 'my mother is a singer' people got the joke but only because they knew there really was a female singer whose name was 'Singer without a name'. There's also been a band 'without a name. Band Zonder Naam, better known as BZN.
Also the joke in the sentence ”heb je een rang?” Is lost because you’d have to know it was a candy called ”Rang” and rang is also the Dutch word for ”rank”. That’s why he offered a peppermint🤣
About 'Without Name'… André replied: 'My mum's a singer!' In that era there was a Dutch lady-singer, Mary Servaes, who had the stage-name: 'Lady-singer Without Name'. She was famous for her interpretation of Dutch 'songs of life'... She was good friends with André, so she wouldn't mind he makes jokes about her name... In English 'perspective', the answer about André's name would be the same hilarious one, if he had answered 'Lynn'. And then: 'My mum's a singer!' 🌺
5:00 so for reference, because the joke doesn't make sense otherwise: there's a well known Dutch female singer whose stage name is 'The singer without a name' 5:50 Rang (rank) is a brand of candy.
The last joke, is that the dude is not a soldier at all. Hes at the paleis of the "guarding" it. Since the palace can be visited by the public. The man is just the person who keeps an eye on the toilets. Witch the army captain doesn't notice. Andre van Duinds work is old, but its gold.

It a certain point in life he understood that with his age he should show another side of him. Now he is probably the most loved artist here in the Netherlands. He is so friendly and warm. Thanks for sharing this one and yes your reaction is the same as ours many years ago. André is in a league of his own. You should try and see some other sketches of him too, that is, if you can find him with subtitles.
It reminds me of something that happened a long time ago when I visited the base nearby. I knew a captain there and they wanted to borrow my horse for some event. So I went there to talk about what should happen when one of the (back then still military service. Is that the right word? They HAD to) soldiers walked by and the captain I was talking to told the soldier to pick something up for him somewhere, forgot what it was. The soldier stopped, just looked at him and said 'something wrong with your hands? Get it yourself!" I almost got into a laughing fit and told him I have the feeling we were not going to win a war with guys like that, lol. The captain said the soldiers couldn't give a bleep what orders he gave them. They didn't want to be there and taking orders was out of the question. They didn't care if they got punished or not. We don't have military service like that anymore. Gee, wonder why, lol.
The Joke "Without Name" or Zonder Naam, refers to a Singer (female) who was known as Zangeres Zonder Naam (Singer Without Name.) Rang (Rank) used to be a brand name of candy that came in rolls, just like peppermint.
Singer without name!! was a famous female singer in the 70's in Holland. She was very populair by older people and her real name was Mary Servaes. Now you know what he was talkin' about...
If you watch closely you can see where Andre got his inspiration. Stan Laurel: if he saw this he would be proud. I ll say this: if Andre was born in the US he would have been world famous. Not only a very funny guy, but also the kind of person that unites people. 75 years old now and still going strong, though he does do other things now like hosting shows and acting in some serious roles. But know this: if you search on Andre van Duin, be ready for a treasure of material for this guy has been a comedian for over 50 years!
It was even funnier for the audience then then it is to us Dutchies now. All the man in the audience have been in the military, because of the conscription we had then, and all of them had a Captain like that. Ibalso saw a lot of older people in the audience, Andre was born 2 years after WW2 but had a lot of older fans, who lived thru WW2 and used comedy like this to give their experiences a place.
Another thing is that Andre liked to improvise, it happend more than once that Frans couldn't hold his laugh because Andre changed the text while they were playing :).
As we have a saying in Holland nowadays; Toen was geluk nog heel gewoon > back then happiness was very normal. Nowadays in some cities I do not feel like walking in The Netherlands anymore.

The Joke "Without Name" or Zonder Naam, refers to a Singer (female) who was known as Zangeres Zonder Naam (Singer Without Name.)
Rang (Rank) used to be a brand name of candy that came in rolls, just like peppermint.
more like this pls
Singer without name!! was a famous female singer in the 70's in Holland. She was very populair by older people and her real name was Mary Servaes. Now you know what he was talkin' about...
4:03 because this is from the last century, not 2022. Back then, the people in Holland looked like this.
To HXC: Zangeres zonder naam (female singer without a name) is a former Dutch female singer of songs of life. You may have missed this joke.
Can you guys imagine the Dutch Army only went downwards since that time! 😅😅😅
He also made a comedy movie called "De Boezemvriend", playing a dentist in Napoleon's time. 😂😂😂
I think one of his best of the 2 he made.😊
We love adre van duin ❤
singer without a name was a famous dutch female singer. who sang tearjerkers songs
Hilarious! Welcome to the Dutch conscription army of the 70ies and 80ies! 😀
A lot of these sketches were written as a premise, a punch line and some general diection.
The rest of it was typically improvised.
We need more andre van duin
Another thing is that Andre liked to improvise, it happend more than once that Frans couldn't hold his laugh because Andre changed the text while they were playing :).
This is the army of the Netherlands in a nutshell 😂😂😂😂😂
andre van duin - wedding hall (trouwzaal) is my favorite sketch of him. I hope you will comment on this soon!
Is coming, still working on the translations
Is on the calender for today 😃
Some day just hope one time to try it, thinking about my act!
The "singer whitout a name " was a Dutch slinger of life songs, "de zangeres zonder naam " in Dutch !
So many things are impossible to translate.
Old Andre van Duin sketches are hilarious. 🤣
When he talks about his name; mister No name. It is a dutch joke because there was a dutch lady and her artist name was Singer Without a name.
As we have a saying in Holland nowadays; Toen was geluk nog heel gewoon > back then happiness was very normal.
Nowadays in some cities I do not feel like walking in The Netherlands anymore.
Was hoping you would do more Andre van Duin videos! So yay!

And that is exactly why you don't want a standing conscription army unless you have just been invaded, then its all hands on deck.
