My new Forester XT is amazing in bad weather and snow. It's never slipped a tire, and it's unbelievably secure in the rain, best car I've ever owned, PLUS it's fast as hell with the stage 1 tune!
I have a 2015 XT too. The first time I drove it in the snow it has had accumulated to a few inches. I didn’t slide once or get stuck. If I still had my scion I wouldn’t have been able to get out of my parking spot at work.
I just bought a new 2017 Legacy from Peninsula Subaru. I drove around everywhere after this little 4" dump we had. On my way home from work that night there were a good 6 accidents along Hwy-16 on the way to Port Orchard. I had no problems at all. No loss of traction anywhere. I drove 40mph with complete confidence, and no problems on any of the hills near my house. I also went up a big hill by my house, then drove down on purpose and hit the brakes to see how well it would stop half way down the hill. From 25mph to stop, there was no slip at all. I literally stopped half way down the hill, and it never changed direction from where I was pointed. My '05 Corolla could never do that. I'm sold!!! This is without a doubt, the best AWD system on the market, right alongside Audi Quattro. btw, I think the Jeep was just waiting for you to come down, before he went up. That Wrangler could definitely get up that hill.
On a standard production Jeep, you do not have to stop to shift into 4wd. Simply travelling under 25mph is all that's needed for safe shifting of the transfer case. The Wrangler comes with either a limited slip rear diff, or an auto locking diff, and you do not need to do anything. The front diff is an open diff, and the whole vehicle also uses traction control to shift torque between wheels for traction. Also for driving in snow, there basically no need to ever use 4-Lo gearing to drive around. 4-Lo is strictly used for off road steep climbing and/or towing a heavy load short distances.
I am a Subaru lover and besides the car having one of the best AWD systems out there it all depends on what tires you have. When you go from me all season or summer Tire to a snow tire there is a night and day difference.
C’mon Seattle, a dusting of snow is nothing. Come over here to Leavenworth where we get 5-6 feet of snow every winter and navigate that into Wenatchee everyday. We have to put our Outback into Xmode just to get up our private road and into our garage during the winter months. When the whimps in Seattle get 2-3 inches of snow, the city goes insane and schools are closed.
I remember similar growing up in northeast Washington. We essentially had an ice storm, and should have closed the school. Long story short, bus driver ended up sideways in the road and kept it rubber side down thankfully. As soon as she got it whooped, she called the bus garage to come put chains on, and lit herself a smoke. I thought she was going to beat the school superintendent for not closing or even delaying school. When he showed up.

We live 5 miles up in the mountains from town (1/2 an hour to the city) on a private road that we have to plow and maintain ourselves. We have to put the Subie in X mode just to get up our road and into our garage. If we have to go to Seattle and the passes require chains, then we have to comply.
@Doc1855 I did read what you said. I apologize for not making my point clear. Subaru is such bad ass AWD, you don't need chains. If you feel like you do, stay home. I understand Snoqualmie pass, and whatever the other one is may require chains. Thats a different ball of wax all together.
I pick up a used 04 Outback Sport Friday, I can't wait. It's pretty amazing what they can do in snow, and I've been stuck with RWD for a few years lol.
I have a '13 WRX Stage 2 upgrade. I have all-seasons, not winters on my WRX and last winter in Alberta was a fairly standard Cdn winter. Not one issue. I love my WRX
I saw a note on the Impreza from Subaru saying that when in snow, going uphill or down, you should turn off your auto traction control (logo of car skidding). The service mgr at Peninsula Subaru and a mechanic both agreed with this. If you don't shut it off, the computer (of course) will think you're losing control and start braking.
snow tires are still the proper tires for the winter season, i know my WRX would just drive alot better with them in winter conditions vs my M&S rated tires
Thanks for this video, it's very helpful for someone shopping for a compact / sub-compact and trying to weigh options. Certainly a plus for the Impreza.
What I like about Subaru vehicles is that they have lots of glass all around you, so great visibility. The beltline on Subaru cars is lower than on most other cars so you can actually 'SEE' the ground in front of your vehicle where you are driving, and you don't have this high hood in front of your face preventing you from seeing the path directly ahead of your vehicle. That Jeep at 2:30 has worn out nearly-bald tires, so of course there is no way he's going to get up any snow covered hill.

My 1st Subaru was a Justy and that little guy was unstoppable in Montreal, Quebec. Now its a Forester mainly for my tall hight of 6''4" & I'll NEVER buy another make plus it's the easiest oil changing with the oil filter up top.
Well done Brian! No need for snow tires in a Subaru. I think it is stupid and a waste of time and money to have to maintain two sets of tires. I run all season tires year around in Colorado and go to the mountains on the weekends to ski. Thanks for proving all the nay sayers wrong and snow tires.
Hey there I just bought a 2019 Subaru impreza in April. I moved to Conifer Co. So I'm facing my first winter in the mountains here soon. The all season tires did amazing in unplowed snow uphill in the one blizzard we had last May. Do you think I will be ok in the mountains with the stock Continental all season tires? Snow tires wear very quickly here in Co due to the roads being dry most of the time as I'm sure you know.
If you WANT to powerslide, can you turn off the stability/skid control from the driver's seat? All of the '90s-early 2000s Subarus I've driven had no traction control and were WAY FUN to slide around at will. It's half the fun of owning one!
Last winter in Western WA, a light dusting, and everyone that didn’t have Winter tires and AWD were either still at home or in the ditch 😂 meanwhile the Subi crowd (I have a 16’ WRX) is literally drifting everywhere with zero issues 😂😂😂
Good video, especially considering how simply made it was with only one camera and minimal editing. Generally, Subarus national ads aren't as good. What kind of tires? I am looking at the crosstrek
how many kilometers does impreza 1.6 1995 last, if serviced properly and regulary? Do they go over up to 400,000 km?
Usually they're wrecked long before then, but if properly taken care of just like any other vehicle 400k isn't impossible.
