Looking closely at you left wrist during the video, I noticed that the thumb position you recomend at the end has the great benefit of leading to a straight wrist position. No bent or twisted wrist, hence no stress on the carpian tunnel. This is an issue for me, and probably for other bass players. Thank you for the documented analysis and convenient recomendation.
Dear Mark, thank you for giving us beautiful instructions in connection with successful bass-playing. All the best for the next at least 11 years. Regards from good old Germany Ralf
I may have started my bass journey at another place, but I'm continuing it here on TB. Lots of great informations and tips. I always recommend this channel when someone asks for advice regarding an issue, you can find it all here.
Another fantastic lesson. And I love how it builds on that last video. This is definitely something I need to work on. Congrats on 11 years! You're the best!
Talking bass videos are always no horsesh1t and straight to the point. So many other bass guitar/guitar channels are full of gimmicks and put on and ott enthusiasm, and people wearing gimpy looking hats. Here's to another 11 years 👍
Small hands is a total BS excuse. I'm a woman with small hands and I've played a six-string with a neck as wide as a 2x4 for the past 20 years. As Mark said, it's about thumb placement and how you pivot your elbow. I also set my strap where the bass fits on my body in the same place whether I'm standing or sitting.
YES ... Setting the bass height So you can play it sitting or standing with the same strap adjustment really makes a big difference in the mechanics. Good for you for bringing that up
I found when i learned to slap that slapping octaves with my thumb muting the e-string was impossible as i couldnt fret the octave. I switched to muting the E with my 2nd finger
I've never commented before a video even got posted - that's how bad I need to know this. My pinkie makes a left turn at the knuckle and I end up using the side of it. I dread octaves. Okay, I never even CONSIDERED anchoring my thumb under the G & D strings - that actually kinda straightens that pinkie out and overall almost everything seems easier. #whodathunkit
I can move my ring finger by itself, but I can't move my pinkie just by itself. When I bend my pinkie, my ring finger bends with it. Dont know why. It's just the way that I'm wired, I guess. ✌️

I’m new to Talking Bass but I can already see why Mark considered to be such a legend amongst other teachers. I’m definitely here to stay.
There is so much to discover on his channel. Enjoy the journey.
Thank you for all that you do Mark
I'm a senior with small hands and a gimpy pinky (childhood injury) and this was VERY helpful.❤

Great video class thank you
Love it. Agree also with comments that this is also affected by strap height.
Thanks Mark , another great useful lesson. Personally find you to be the best teacher / instructor around..... all useful lessons to playing better.
Thank you Mark. Yet another clear and straightforward explanation. And, the bonus - the Fender Precision gets another outing! 😄

Have you ever considered using a second close-up camera? I think it would be super helpful!

Use the weight of the arm to press down the strings. This technique highly recommended by many teachers.

I agree Mark.
Digging the new blue background BTW, much less retina-searing.

One secret is watching or looking at how the pros are playing it😊. So many secrets will be revealed if you watch them play.
