Brilliant! Yeah there are way more types than just the standard pick scrape; when you start playing with effects like pitch shifters, flangers and delays you can get some really gnarly sounds!
Glad it was helpful! It's a easy enough technique, but there's a tonne of cool stuff you can do with it- Tom morello has some kickass solos that are pretty much just pick scraping, maybe with a bit of kill switch thrown in too!
Glad to hear it Stefa! Thought if I could put all these tricks in to a nice short video that would be better than wading through some 20 long minute lesson 🤘
Awesome technique video! My main problem was that I was pressing way too much into the strings and it sounded absolutely horrendous. :D This is a video that I have to watch a few timesa and spend some time practicing those different techniques.
I'd love to play these dirty sounding effects on my guitar but I'm always scared of being too loud, I'm scared people are gonna judge me and think I'm a shitty player. Maybe I'll try to be a little louder this time.
Awesome. Most of the time I use a Jim Dunlop Tortex 0.88, but some times use the 1.14 and 0.74 (or close to that!) Using the side/back is the best way to keep the tip from getting destroyed, although you can re-sharpen a pick with a bit of old carpet- just running it quickly along and it'll sand a bit off
I can't believe the first few seconds are what could be heard in the ending of Breaking Benjamin's Phobia Outro! For the longest time I always wondered how they did that sound !
Any pick will do! But these are a few things to consider- A thicker one will bend less, might be easier to use. Sharksfin picks have ridges which are great for pickscrapes. Metal picks will give a different sound (you can use the edge of a coin as well!) A bigger pick gives you more area to slide across the strings. Hope that helps? Are you getting the type of sound you want from your pick scrapes?
my favorite way to do the scrape is to scrape down to the 12th fret, then bring my left hand further down past my picking hand and hammer-on 24 and slide down the rest with my finger while barring the strings. i don't know who came up with it, but i just think it looks really stylish and less nerdy.
Thanks dude! In all honesty I really can't remember what I used for this video! I think I just cranked up the overdrive/distortion to get that really grindy sound 🤘
Good question! Sort of... If you use a clean tone, it's going to sound more like a slide than having that 'scarping' sound, it'll also be quite quiet. But, it will still make a noise, and that might be the sound you're looking for?
Yeah, if you push more 'in to' the string with the edge of the pick you'll get that scrape sound. If you push it down against the fretboard, it'll tend to make more or that slide-y scrape sound. Let me know if that helps? 🤘
There's probably some truth to that- I think I tended to use the back of Jazz IIIs (that rounded bit), not the most convenient thing, but made a better sound!
The rock slide thing? Just hit the strings a bit with your left hand and slide it down the neck; if you've got enough gain you'll get that "neeeow" type sound :)
Am i overlooking something? I play guitar for a while now, but it still seems somthing is not right, because it sounds like i just rub my finger on the strings. Could it be, that i have the wrong pickups or something? btw i have an ordinary e guitar with three pickups... maybe my guitar is bad afterall
@@JbfMusicGuitar Well i tried, but on my guitar it just doesn't seem to work. maybe i should try with other strings? Any recommendations? 'cause i need new strings anyway...
@@JbfMusicGuitar thats kind of what I was after but not exactly, might be a lot to ask but to see exactly what I mean watch Cole Rollands cover of Bring Me To Life and skip to 3:33 in his video
how do i do the pick scrape + rock slide from 4:37?? do i just lightly press the fret (around the 15th or so) with my fretting hand and just slide down? or is there another special technique involved?
It's as simple as that! Just slap your hand on the fretboard and slide your down from the 15th fret (or wherever) towards the nut; you'll need enough drive/distortion to get a bigger sound, or you can strike the strings. Let me know if that makes sense? Hopefully it does!
@@JbfMusicGuitar i dont remember which specific song--they did it quite often. sometimes they would scrape four times. im just not sure if its a scrape or a slide.

Awesome. This is harder to learn than people think, and hard to find someone who will teach it. Thanks.
Totally here's a whole art to keeping it dirty and loose, without everything becoming too sloppy!
Way more techniques than I was looking for! Super awesome! I'll be incorporating all of that into my practice sessions! Thank you!

Great video, got way more than I asked for and am very grateful for that!! Love your vibe keep it up🤘🏼
Great to hear that Ethan! It's simple enough trick, but at the same time there is more you can do with it that might meet the eye!
This was just excellent.
Really glad to hear it, hope you have a lot of fun with these!

You can always practice quite, then turn up more when your confident!
I'd rather actually play louder to hear my mistakes to correct them!
Awesome man. I’ve been trying to figure it out since I’ve been learning buckethead songs. Awesome
Great, glad this demystified it! It's just a class trick to have up your sleeve

@@spoderman6969 Cheers dude!
hi...what kind of pick is best for these scrapes?
Any pick will do!
But these are a few things to consider-
A thicker one will bend less, might be easier to use.
Sharksfin picks have ridges which are great for pickscrapes.
Metal picks will give a different sound (you can use the edge of a coin as well!)
A bigger pick gives you more area to slide across the strings.
Hope that helps? Are you getting the type of sound you want from your pick scrapes?
your guitar has a super distorion pickups on neck and bridge, but a single coil in between? that's so interesting and cool....

Bare Kunckles in the neck and bridge and stock in the middle (I'd spent all my budget on the humbuckers, lol!)
I might have seen Vai to something a bit like that before? Sounds flashy for sure!
4:10 it's been used in muse song hysteria
Nice one Leonardo! Great point of reference, Muse have some killer tracks 🎸🎶
hey sickest slides ive heard! what pedals do you use for that tone?! please and thankyou!
Thanks dude! In all honesty I really can't remember what I used for this video! I think I just cranked up the overdrive/distortion to get that really grindy sound 🤘
does it only works with distortion or it works too with clean guitar?
Good question! Sort of...
If you use a clean tone, it's going to sound more like a slide than having that 'scarping' sound, it'll also be quite quiet. But, it will still make a noise, and that might be the sound you're looking for?
Tom Scholz from Boston pick scrape is a good example.
Good shout!
I would have loved to see the alexi liaho slide and pickscrape combo
Have you got any clips of him doing it?
Can I do it on bassguitar? :o
Only one way to find out...
Yeah, it'll work fro sure! But you only really get that grotty sound when there's some overdrive or distortion on
Hey dude. Do i need to press down on the strings with the pick while i scrape?
Yeah, if you push more 'in to' the string with the edge of the pick you'll get that scrape sound.
If you push it down against the fretboard, it'll tend to make more or that slide-y scrape sound.
Let me know if that helps? 🤘

Question: Is anyone having a problem pick scraping with nylon picks? I find my Jazz IIIs to be pretty shit at doing it, but the Tortex works just fine
There's probably some truth to that- I think I tended to use the back of Jazz IIIs (that rounded bit), not the most convenient thing, but made a better sound!

I've seen some people pick slide on the higher strings, how the hell do u do that?
3:10 - Go over that there, in a nutshell; enough gain and some left hand muting/string dampening are pretty key.
Let me know if that helps out?

i literally cant get any sound from a pickslide my amp just goes silent
Do you have enough gain? Also make sure you've not got a heavy noise gate, or lots of compression on
^lemme know if those sort it out?
I have lots of gain and the noise gate is pretty heavy but i dont know how to change that im using a blackstar id core 20 btw
You'd need to have a look in the manual, or maybe pop on youtube?
my pickslides are silent i dont get this
Lol no one gonna mention the fact that it’s called nut scrape
