This ship definitely grew on me. It is cool seeing the lore reflected in its stats too. People always talk about drake ships being taped together but as far as I know they actually tend to be more heavily armoured than other ships because armour is cheaper than shields lol
Me and my buddy own all of the Cutter varients. We love our duct taped space winnebagos, and it's the starter I chose when I first got into the game. It may lack firepower, or speed, or maneuverability, but as a starter ship it's a really good option to me.

Cutter Scout is my favorite variant due to having some size 2 components, a deeper cargo area than the rambler and what should be advanced scanning - as the scanning/radar systems get more developed. But the Rambler is cool too. The Cutter line in general make great RV camper vans for the verse
Scan/Detect/Stealth is actively being worked on! They had to because they were doing a pass on the regular Terrapin as they were prepping to sell the Medi-Pin
The Cutter was my first ship. I came to the game during the IAE it was dropped. I’ve since upgraded it to the Cutter Scout. I’ll always keep it in my fleet for nostalgia!
I like the Cutter series and I lean toward the base Cutter as my favorite. It has all the amenities of the Rambler but trades the "walking around" room for cargo space - a much better option imho.The fact I can carry a ROC in the base cutter is fun. It doesn't actually fit, but you can transport it safely with the bay door open since the ROC locks onto the cargo grid. Is it totally safe or smart to do so? You're in a Drake ship, so why even ask that question? LOL! I don't appreciate CIG making most of the starter ships incapable of system-to-system travel because of fuel constraints. That just limits new players' ability to explore, and with only 1-2 systems, that's just bad. Even if a newplayer can start in Pyro with 4.0, a ship with less than 1 unit of Q-fuel will be hard put to get around since Pyro is so big.
I upgraded my Aurora LN starterpack to the base Cutter almost 2 years ago. And I haven't regretted it once. I really love my Cutter. Doesn't carry the most cargo of the starters and isn't very good at combat but still, I would not change it for any other startership at the moment. This ship just has a certain style that I really enjoy.
Somebody once pointed out that the front of the Cutter looks just like the front of the Caterpillar’s lower Command pod section (just upside-down) and now I can’t unsee it.
I own this and it's usually my preference for daily driving. It's inexpensive to operate and I rarely need to worry about fuel. I'll typically stuff a Mirai pulse in the back with a box and goof around the verse. Not being limited by range in such a small ship is really nice. I've got other larger ships like the Cutty and the MSR but unless I'm doing a specific task like salvage or hauling, I almost always prefer my rambler.
Great intro with the paint showcase. The quality is top notch! I would only suggest adding chapters so we can skip to the review portion if we don’t want to see all the paints.

It has everything; a seat for a friend, suit locker, weapon / tool storage, shoilet. And the Rambler has good distance, too. IMO, the Cutters are a good example of price & features.
iI currently have a little industrial fleet...... but i still have a cutter rambler with Pyrite paint on it (best paint ever).... i love how much QT capacity it has being a ship as small as it is.
I think the score is fair, but as you mentioned in the review this ship and variant isn't meant so much for combat or flight characteristics, and more so for accommodations, range and survivability. That's why I have one anyway, as I'm interested in exploration/expedition class ships. The storage space, suit locker and weapon racks say this is a good candidate for exploring harsher environments or doing 'bunker buster' type missions. The jump seat is nice if a friend or other trusted player needs to come along or be picked up. Being able to still fit 2 1SCU storage containers and a Pulse in the back, plus have enough firepower to combat ground vehicles/units, makes it good for ground-based operations or looting. That's how I currently use it anyway haha. That all said, there's something about the package regarding aesthetics and how it flies that makes it enjoyable even with worse stats than some other options. It's very much the Eagle 5 from Spaceballs and I'm all for that. Cheers!
So frustrating how spacious and detailed the interior of this tiny fellow is compared to the Freelancer series. Hope they do a *major* rework some day, take out the mini cargo bay or repurpose it with armour lockers and gun racks, make the front half wider, take out two bunks, two seats, add a dining area, nicer bathroom maybe, nice kitchen area. I want to feel like I can really live in there. Sigh, dreaming I know.
I thought about picking up this ship actually during iae, but I decided to wait it out till next year to flesh out a little exploration fleet to go along side all my industrial ships. I think it'll be fun once some general exploration game loops are added in, to just go out and get lost somewhere, looking for resources, poi's etc one day.
Despite all its stat shortfalls, I LOVE this ship! I would love to see a top five list from the different game loops from you based on your previous reviews.
My favorite starter by a long shot. Going to disagree with you on your points methodology. You forgot +19 (+1 for each paint 😉) bringing it to a total of 26/10 👌👌
VTOL mode is not just cosmetic, it actually changes the maneuverability of the ship. Is was Master Modes before Master Modes were invented, less speed but hiigher combat chances
You missed the best paint of all- the Dying Star paint. I've got my Rambler with Ardor-2 Salvaged Repeaters and Dying Star Paint fitted and ready for Pyro ! Forget big ships as they won't last 5 minutes...small and/or fast and/or stealthy ships will mean you live longer in Pyro.
This is my friends favourite ship and I can see why its a great little starter ship for some further distance travel, however I do think its ridiculous ships like the zeus and c1 have same or even less fuel than it where they should be at least double of what they currently have.
The Drake Cutter series is my favorite starter ship. They might not be the best at any one thing, but they have more character than any other ships in their price range. That goes for all of the Drake ships for that matter.
What do I think of the Rambler? Uh, it’s a flying cargo container that can fit a ATLS, one day Titan suit. That’s an automatic 16 out of 10 score for me
Absolutely love the Rambler and have had several. Like other Drake ships, I love the exterior, but I just can’t stand how dark and bleak their interiors are. Some love it, just not for me. Such a cool little ship, though.
Longest QT range of all starters. If you're eyeing Pyro and don't have a larger ship.. you should shortlist this. Second longest range is Intrepid, followed by Syulen.
The better cheaper Intrepid. While Intrepid is faster and carries more cargo, not being able to safely load even a Pulse without risking collisions is a huge fail on CIG's part. That alone made me keep a Rambler as my small run around ship instead of the Intrepid. Nobody cares about 8 scu of cargo. But people do care about doing bunkers without your ship getting destroyed by bunker turrets.
I would add that the Origin 315p should be able to make the jump to Pyro at some point. The 300 series is fairly out of date and needs some love. With the 315p being the pathfinding variant, it should have extended range because of that.
I wish the interior was better - doesn't do anything with the extra living space that couldn't fit in the base Cutter. How many weapon racks does a solo pilot need anyway? lol
I'm torn on what to think of these ships. It's not that I hate them or anything, I just can't put my finger on why I don't love them. I technically have 3 starter ships, Avenger Titan, Intrepid, and P8X Pisces. Intrepid I have, definitely not for the looks or combat, but as an all around decent starter/daily flyer. The P8X I basically use as a shuttle, since I can call for it on ground pads, and it used to be bananas on its actual jump range. The Avenger I have just cause I like the Avenger, I guess it's technically a terrific starter, especially for combat (which i avoid), but i just generally like it. I'm not sure why I would pick the Rambler over any of those, at least for the reasons I have them. I definitely don't fault anyone for having/liking them, I can totally see why.
The cutters are in that position that if you rather a drake ship then this is your choice but if the manufacturer doesn’t matter then there are plenty of options that do the same or better.
RV living in space lol. Rambler just has the benefit of extra q fuel right now. All the starter ships more or less are on a level field with each having pros and cons. All in the taste for starters
Cutter has best in class cargo/hangar bay and Rambler sacrifices that for a living space that still isn't that useful. The extra fuel is appreciated though.
@ I mean, when it comes to places like pyro, that extra fuel, food processor (they literally mention the food processor on the pledge store) and armor locker will make a huge difference. And unlike the intrepid, the rambler can still carry a mech suit, ptv and easily a pulse. But really? The vibe of just traveling around the verse in your space ship apartment is 100% worth any negatives
I never understood why people loved this ship. I always made run of it for looking like an RV. I couldnt even tell you i see a big difference in the variants. HOWEVER, I purchased the rambler and instantly loved it lol. I only use it for a shuttle and not all the things im sure it can do, might do exploration in it versus the SL max, just not sure yet. Im always hesitant to sit on stats like the instant claim and larger q fuel, but for now its a great bang for buck and enjoyable.
I don't like any of the Cutters. The three shortfalls you point means it struggles to do ship to ship bounties, its not an industry ship, not enough cargo space to make money doing that, etc. It is the Honda Civic of the verse because I think it will be one of the most reliable ships. It will get you from point A to point B eventually and provide a place to store some gear and logout from. It is clear the Cutters are THE starter for 1.0. I think its why it became the default loaner for all events and has so many liveries.
I think it is a shame the DRAKE cutter (all variants) can not carry the DRAKE dragonfly... It can carry a lot of other hover bikes, but not the one of the same brand.
A 7/10?! I've only been following you a few months and this is tied for the second lowest score you've given this entire time... But it's one of the best starters in the game, particularly as a bunker runner. It can hold two people, which few starters can claim, a variety of small vehicles up to the Mule, and is the cheapest ship to have a suit locker. With the two gun racks, suit locker, vehicle flexibility, and option for a second person, the Rambler is by far the cheapest and best ship for doing almost anything other than ship combat and hauling (which don't get a starter at all for the latter).
7/10 based on numbers compared to other ships but honestly in a personal experience it can be a 10/10 for some and a 1/10 for others. I feel like it’s a good ship but definitely not the best of starters, but great!
I know it's personal. They're all personal. :-D I actually have a Rambler and have been trying to reconcile my feelings between it and the Intrepid. They feel like the closest competitors, but the Rambler is $15 cheaper at the cost of being slower and less agile, with lower DPS and cargo, but more weapons storage, more vehicle flexibility, and a much smaller footprint. I'm pretty sure once they both have working cross-sections the Rambler will also have a smaller one and this be a harder target to pick up, since it's smaller in all dimensions compared to the Intrepid. But I also like going fast, and I prefer the larger and also separate cargo for being able to have supplies (spare components, fuses, food and drink) on one lift and actual cargo on the other.
Holy Hydrogen fue cap. Where do they put that many SCU of fuel. The whole thing would have to be a highly pressurized fuel tank, and then some extra externally. Did they vent the atmo in the ship and fill it with Hydrogen? Does it even come with life support? Jokes aside, that is WAY more fuel than some other much larger exploration ships. It's half a tanker.
I love this thing but the interior design is nonsensical to me Why does a single occupant ship that doesn't have a cargo focus need 2 weapons lockers Why does Drake's smallest, cheapest ship have a bigger, fancier bathroom than the Caterpillar, that awkwardly eats up extra floorspace because it has to have a right-angle entry
@QuotidianStupidity A weapon rack close to the cargo bay could be used for multi-tools and mobile tools. Presumably this is why the Zeus Mk II CL has a random extra weapon rack in the back of the ship
I took an immediate dislike to the Cutter line, until this one came out. For some odd reason this one is the one Cutter to rule them all. Even though it's an LTI token for me I just can't bring myself to CCU out of it.

Between the two the intrepid can output more DPS and has more space for cargo so it just depends if you prefer function or form.

The cutters have to be the best line of ships overall. Perfect little motor homes. Base variant is my fav, but the others are great in their own ways.

Pyrite paint really is the best paint! I would buy it on every ship in my fleet if I could, even my Polaris, it would look sick on that.

Great T2 starter. Love it for bunkers and box missions.
It's słów and sturdy, to survive bad driving skills of new player, or to give option to fly after couple bottles os Smoltz.

CIG did a great job designing this ship. Everything a space traveler needs, and nothing they do not.
FYI, you can squeeze a 8 SCU box in the back and still get around it to get in and out

A no-weapon, higher armor/shield with 4 jump seats would make a great small drop ship, like a step up from the Argo Personnel.

Just upgraded mine to the Intrepid. Much faster and doesn't look like a pug. Pugs are cute, but.... I do love the Graphiti paints on these!

@ I mean, when it comes to places like pyro, that extra fuel, food processor (they literally mention the food processor on the pledge store) and armor locker will make a huge difference. And unlike the intrepid, the rambler can still carry a mech suit, ptv and easily a pulse.
But really? The vibe of just traveling around the verse in your space ship apartment is 100% worth any negatives

Is the scout still 1 SCU of quantum in 4.0? Rambler was dropped to current sound range…so was the scout also beefed for q-range?
I never understood why people loved this ship. I always made run of it for looking like an RV. I couldnt even tell you i see a big difference in the variants. HOWEVER, I purchased the rambler and instantly loved it lol. I only use it for a shuttle and not all the things im sure it can do, might do exploration in it versus the SL max, just not sure yet. Im always hesitant to sit on stats like the instant claim and larger q fuel, but for now its a great bang for buck and enjoyable.
I don't like any of the Cutters. The three shortfalls you point means it struggles to do ship to ship bounties, its not an industry ship, not enough cargo space to make money doing that, etc. It is the Honda Civic of the verse because I think it will be one of the most reliable ships. It will get you from point A to point B eventually and provide a place to store some gear and logout from. It is clear the Cutters are THE starter for 1.0. I think its why it became the default loaner for all events and has so many liveries.
I think it is a shame the DRAKE cutter (all variants) can not carry the DRAKE dragonfly...
It can carry a lot of other hover bikes, but not the one of the same brand.
A 7/10?! I've only been following you a few months and this is tied for the second lowest score you've given this entire time... But it's one of the best starters in the game, particularly as a bunker runner. It can hold two people, which few starters can claim, a variety of small vehicles up to the Mule, and is the cheapest ship to have a suit locker. With the two gun racks, suit locker, vehicle flexibility, and option for a second person, the Rambler is by far the cheapest and best ship for doing almost anything other than ship combat and hauling (which don't get a starter at all for the latter).
7/10 based on numbers compared to other ships but honestly in a personal experience it can be a 10/10 for some and a 1/10 for others. I feel like it’s a good ship but definitely not the best of starters, but great!

I actually have a Rambler and have been trying to reconcile my feelings between it and the Intrepid. They feel like the closest competitors, but the Rambler is $15 cheaper at the cost of being slower and less agile, with lower DPS and cargo, but more weapons storage, more vehicle flexibility, and a much smaller footprint. I'm pretty sure once they both have working cross-sections the Rambler will also have a smaller one and this be a harder target to pick up, since it's smaller in all dimensions compared to the Intrepid.
But I also like going fast, and I prefer the larger and also separate cargo for being able to have supplies (spare components, fuses, food and drink) on one lift and actual cargo on the other.
will the syulen be able to make the trip to Pyro? and will it still be interesting in 4.0?😅
Sadly no, the syulen does not have enough QT fuel for the jump between systems.

Review the Syulen plis
Holy Hydrogen fue cap. Where do they put that many SCU of fuel. The whole thing would have to be a highly pressurized fuel tank, and then some extra externally. Did they vent the atmo in the ship and fill it with Hydrogen? Does it even come with life support? Jokes aside, that is WAY more fuel than some other much larger exploration ships. It's half a tanker.

Why does Drake's smallest, cheapest ship have a bigger, fancier bathroom than the Caterpillar, that awkwardly eats up extra floorspace because it has to have a right-angle entry

@QuotidianStupidity A weapon rack close to the cargo bay could be used for multi-tools and mobile tools.
Presumably this is why the Zeus Mk II CL has a random extra weapon rack in the back of the ship

I took an immediate dislike to the Cutter line, until this one came out. For some odd reason this one is the one Cutter to rule them all. Even though it's an LTI token for me I just can't bring myself to CCU out of it.
Its got a lot of great detail.
