Why are people acting like these things are mutually exclusive. You can say gacha games are predatory and still say parents need to do their jobs. If they make these games 16+ or rated M, parents still need to use controls to stop their kids devices from downloading anything over a certain rating. Take one minute to check a box that says require password for purchases. If your kid is under 18 in the US they would need a parent to cosign any bank account or credit card. Look at statements, your responsibility doesn't stop with just helping them open an account.
There are so many dangers for my daughter out there, most of which I have no way to protect her from aside from talking to her, and hoping that she listens and takes what I say to heart. But for cases like this when you do have tools that can help, you as a parent need to use them. Saying this is not defending corporations, it's telling parents they have to be responsible as well. It's one thing to take precautions an something happens, but something completely different to just not be paying attention or trying at all.

because if you aren't dunking on genshin specifically, which is a very profitable thing to do at this moment, you ain't doing it right, apparently.
BTW i think that plenty of governments, what they really do, is pretend to look at gambling in disgust, while they silently endorse it behind the scenes. Remember these companies (supposedly, but that's a story of its own) pay a shitload of taxes given the profit they make, which is why almost all countries with huge economies really silently approve gambling or pretend to regulate it.
If governments wanted to regulate gambling and give a cut on it, they definitely could crack it down. They don't because it's not really convenient to do so.

Its funny because the parents see it as just a normal game because its cute and all like its shown on play store etc and its for 12+ so they let those kids play etc

Gachas are very good at hiding the gacha for at least an hour of gameplay so unless a parent stayed for a whole gaming session they wouldn't even see the gacha if their kid started up any gacha game.

I think it's wild that anyone can defend a company that charges what is essentially £300 for a character. If for example, parents accidently or unknowingly had credit cards in apps and they cost maybe £2-£5 that's bad, kids still can rack up hundreds if not thousands, but it's still not ALWAYS going to be an amount that is unfeasible to pay. The fact that Hoyo release two - four £300 characters EVERY PATCH, and people are really out here defending Hoyo like it's just a "parenting problem". The fact that Hoyoverse even allow the option for anyone to financially cripple themselves or other people is a disgusting practice, and if they really want to keep charging these ridiculous sums, then they should have the wherewithal to put the appropriate safety measures in place for those who are younger, or even those who are vulnerable. More and more over the past year Hoyo have stopped making a game for the players, and have instead made a game for their wallets.

Gonna be honest, I feel like people are missing the third piece of this whole debacle, and that's the fact we should be more heavily scrutinizing the companies that apply age ratings in general.
Even with Gacha out of the picture, we've seen that the ratings some of these companies apply are absurd at best. Such as the most recent scandal involving Balatro where PEGI wanted to rate it 18+. Even when you bring non-hoyo gachas into the mix is shows almost blatant incompetence as games like Nikke and Azur Lane are only rated at 12+.
That's also not bringing into account how we also have equivalencies in terms of these ratings overall. The main example being of a 16+ rating by the CADPA is only a 12+ by PEGI or T for the ESRB.

  • @darrenthong7507

this is my take on your point, If kids at 16 at up stil dont know they doing. Then they are dumb. Simple as that.
I do agree children below 16 need parent to monitor on purchase. In the first which parent allow cc use directly ? Cmon. Here in asia almost every child got own account and payment is not link to it so even if they wan to pay also cant . In event they manage to pay, less than 10 min a banker will call verified. Plus banker here also come out a system the second time you make purchase, the transaction will not go thru. You need call bank to re allow it. Why is this feater is not in west ?
Lastly on having child to know. That is bs. I take care of sibling and even look after their bank acc and finance . So basically is same parenting. The issue with western is from young they are not train and educate when issue come they start blaming. That is issue. Mentality culture. Here in asia we are train from you ange to manage ownselve . Obvious those from rich family will know train this way as they are spoonfeed or snowflake parent.

Technically what FTC is asking is to have clarity on how much a character cost , most CC are saying that the explanation of how pity works is enough , yes and no , because it depends on how many times you miss the pity while trying to get the max constellations for your character it may cost more or less depending on the luck, some CC say that other gacha have the same recipe , yes and no again : you can get characters for a fixed price in some games like azur lane, wuwa and Nikke, you can get dups in their shops , 200 mileage tickets in Nikke I dont remember how much is in wuwa , you can get an ultra rare drop for 200 pulls in Azur Lane so the price is fixed and you know how much you need to spend to get your characters , same applies for gacha that have 100 drop rate like Snowbreak , PGR, and Aether Gazer.
So in the end having a 100% banner should fix the problem , if the player want to go gambling on the 50/50 banner that is their decision but the clarity of the price of the character should be taken from the 100% banner
About the parent fault I agree as well is a two side issue, parent should educate themselves and understand what gacha game means and google play, app store should raise the rating of the game, if gacha is gambling at its core then it should have higher rating

I understand your reason. However from European perspective I think dumb decisions and mistakes are neccesary. Then the child should suffer the consequences and learn from it.
    1. If you child plays a gacha game its perfect way to learn them resource management and the price of money
    2. If you child spend irresponsibly - you are a failure as parent
    3. Why the child can use a credit card without parent knowldge?
at the end the company should provide some warnings but its you job as a parent to raise the child properly.
If you eat too many sugars/drink too much etc you can die. Does it mean that the company should be responsible for your lack of restrain? Are we in Idiocracy?

I think the problem these content creators have is that the FTC seemingly went for specifically Hoyoverse as opposed to EA with Fifa and Madden.
The simple thing is slap an age gate on the account and we are done. So one thing about the age rating, its a majorly flawed system where Pegi changed Balatro to 18+ because simulated gambling yet other poker games with simulated gambling sit at a lower age rating.

Meanwhile big name gacha games like fate/grand order and dragon ball gacha games are not being targeted at all. It's just a strange thing that needs to be pointed out, is all. Sure, just remember the government is a corporation as well. My concern is how quickly people side with one of gaming's most notorious enemies, politicians that do not understand games deciding what is safe for your child, just because you agree with them in this case.
That's my concern with the wording. There's a lot of subtle wording and outright misinformation that is getting glossed over. From a group that would love to have more control over what is deemed safe or harmful in the games industry.
I'm not sure everyone is considering the precedent it sets once an aspect of a game is deemed deceptive and predatory and having a negative influence on the development a person *to the extent* that the government needs to protect that group. I've never known the government to be a "this seems a safe space to stop" kind of organization when it comes to control.
Particularly, when it's questionable in the first place if this action does not have an ulterior motive in the first place since it is not universally applied and is not even cleaning up their own house first (US gaming companies that are arguably worse).
Bottom line, enforce transparency and empower parents to remain in ultimate control, yes. But, let the parents, and non-parents, decide what is "safe" for themselves and their own kids.
I could just be paranoid, but I've seen this happen enough times not to trust the government in making these boundaries.

Is it not about defending, it is about the state taking the responsability that was of the parents in the first place. State should not get in the way that people to people/service relationship works, you allow it to introduce a little, then it goes down hill, like how you even talk to each other in every day routine. People that defends the state dictating how people/service interact to each other are stupid, like you. Imagine Canada that parent's aren't alllowed to go against gender idiology, if their 7-years-old boy wants to identify as a girl, they are obligated to accept and not question it, that's one example of a bad thing that can happen when you allow the state to dictate relationships.
