I'm building a small table from Styrofoam. The table will levitate for a magic trick. It has to look like real wood so audience doesn't realize how light it is. I plan to use these ideas for painting it to look real. Thanks for the tips! BTW, I used 2" thick white Styrofoam craft board to build. Same that Michaels sells but got it cheap on eBay.
You can if you want to, but don't have to. Depends upon where it will reside. If we leave something outside for months, we have put top coat on before. Most of the time we leave it as is.
+JZ Fernandez This would be regular latex paint! (we always buy the stuff that is on sale in the mess up paint sale area. You can find awesome colors for $5 a gallon!)
I do a pirate themed yard display so this is my thing. I went away from the foam since I've lost props made out of foam (I keep them stored outside). You are more than welcome to check out my channel to see my latest shipwreck. Everyone does their wood grain differently so its a matter of preference. Looks good, I tend to use greys to make it look more aged but that's just me. For just a hint of a highlight, maybe hit just a few spots with a white. Remember, in low light and colored lights the paint will look different so maybe check it out in your haunt lighting. Love to see how it looks when done. Thanks for sharing.
Great advice! We have been turning the lights off and putting the LED lights on it to see how it's looking and so far we're pretty happy with it. We're actually goign to be using two white LED wash light on it--we want it to look fairly well lit, and then once you get inside, things get spooky... Thanks for the advice!
I'm chomping at the bit ! Can't wait to see how it all looks when its done.
You guys are incredibly talented.
Cheers !
Thanks Todd! Cheers!
Look's great! can't wait to see the finished haunt.
We're looking forward to this one a lot this year--I hope all the trick or treaters enjoy it too...
That wood grain looks amazing! Great job! Can't wait to see how it all comes together.
Thank you! Stay tuned--we'll keep updating!
I'm not much into foam, but I appreciate the efforts you guys put into doing what it is you do. Cheers!
Cheers! More to come!
Looking forward to seeing the completed ship!
Me too!! LOL
This is awesome. Good job!
Thank you for watching!
pink foam rocks! I used it extensively in my taxidermy work.
I use the drybrush technique on my concrete statues when I paint them.
Awesome!
Can you do one that’s like Shiplab with light color?
Very very nice😀

I need some of this done. You do such a great job. I would legit ship you the foam piece I have and pay you to do this to it.
Do you use a sealant as a final step?

awesome techniques. what kind of paint did you use?
Yes what type of paint is it oil or water base?????

+hector orellana Regular ol' water based latex household paint!
Do you guys ever sell your props after you have finished your haunted house?
Haha--not as of yet--but we've thought about it (especially now that we have whole rooms (and a storage unit) full of walls, props, etc.
Are you going to be open before the 31st? If so, are you releasing a poster with the address, etc?
No--we'll just be open on the 31st. Though I will be doing a video walk through here on RUclips for those that can't make it! Cheers!
