One of the classic TV shows of the 1950s and much beloved by an entire generation of boys who grew up in that decade, SILENT SERVICE ran for 78 episodes between 1957--1958. "Tirante Plays a Hunch" aired in June of 1957 and starred Glen Vernon, Russell Johnson and Charles Gray. The plot revolves around an incident from 1945, in which the commander of the submarine USS Tirante believed that if he did not surface, he would lose his target in the shallow waters of a Japanese-held harbor. (Not to give anything away but Tirante received two battle stars and a Presidential Unit Citation for her World War II service.)
Created by California National Productions, this syndicated anthology television series was based on actual events in the submarine service of the U.S. Navy. The show was hosted by Rear Admiral Thomas M. Dykers, who began each episode with the refrain: "Tonight, we bring you another thrilling episode of Silent Service stories, of warfare under the sea."
Almost all of the episodes focused on the history of specific submarines, including many war stories. Many actors who appeared on The Silent Service, surfaced in other classic television shows including Russell Johnson, DeForest Kelley and Leonard Nimoy, Jerry Paris and Liam Sullivan, Eric Morris, Joe Conley, Mike Connors, Lawrence Dobkin, Ron Hagerthy, Adam Kennedy, Robert Knapp, Paul Richards, Bing Russell, Craig Stevens, Dennis Weaver and Stuart Whitman.
This was a great show that aired when a lot of military-related series were on TV: "Flight", "West Point", "Annapolis Story" and "Navy Log" to name a few. Unfortunately it never went into re-runs so it's very rarely seen -- something we hope to address via RUclips.

It was a true pleasure to see Captain Beach.
His book Run Silent, Run Deep is a favorite of mine.
What a great TV show!
Ever notice that the crew has perfectly shined shoes, even after being at sea for severak weeks? absolutely amazing!!!
They shined 'em every day per ComSubPac!
Remember watching these sub stories in the mid 1950s. Came on around 7 pm. Just made home after work about supper time. Still a good half show.
They couldn't miss! They had " The Professor" on board.
Love these old clips from the TV show. That was a YOUNG Russell (Professor) Johnson in this clip. The Silent Service took the battle to the Japanese and accounted for a large number of ships sank. DBF. USS Clamagore SS 343
Russell Johnson just died last month.
I recall watching those episodes of "Silent Service" (along with "West Point Story," and "Men of Annapolis") when I was in High School.... and "Victory at Sea," as well... they were probably one of the reasons I enlisted in the Navy after I graduated. Just watching them gave me a chill an a thrill... hey, I was an impressionable kid, and even now, after my time in the service was over, I'd jump out of my chair if I heard a "General Quarters" klaxon.
My Dad was in the silent service. He retired in 1955, after 22 years. He was asked to be COB of the first nuc boat. He turn it down do lack of education. He started with PBY then went to sub’s.
I was 3 when this aired .But We did not get TV until I was 5 in 1960
So sorry hit the key too fast
a very BIG THANK YOU to you and all who put up these great shows and movies of years past.
It is so grand to watch them and it brings back memories of watching them on our old RCA that was around 12 inch diameter black and white TV with tin foil antenna for better receiption.
hahahah lol as I remember that old TV and it worked fine all the way into the late 1960;s
Thrilling now as it was then. THANKS A MILLION FATHOMS for posting! Subscriber for life!!
Fantastic series. Please post more on RUclips!
SILENT SERVICE..CRAZY NOISE INTRO
Love these episodes. Have you any more? Thankyou for posting.
That's not Edward L Beach..that's the Professor!
That's Russell Johnson, the Professor from Gilligan's Island.
Duh, he did have a coconut radio in his quarters, along with Mary Ann and Ginger!🤣🤣🤣
Awsome show !!....I read a book entitled: " thunder below " by a captain Flunke, i believe, and it got me into things submarine related..now i find this gem of a show..thanks for posting!
It’s the professor!
My dads favorite boat was the Carbinnaro, not sure of the spelling. All three of my dads son went into the Army and we all retired from that service.
The sub show I recall as a kid back in the 1950;s was sponsored by the SUNOCO gas/oil company.
I also thought Llyod Bridges narrated them.
I recall Sea Hunt which starred Llyod Bridges which to a kid afraid of going into the sea (and yet later joined the USN) was a terrific show and his show was way before Jacques Cousteau (which I enjoyed his documentaries).
Wihout our seas and the great and small animals who live in those seas this world of our is doomed.
When the Japanese, Norway, Finland continue to hunt and kill the worlds great whales all in the name of "reseacrh (why do you need to kill 30000 whales a year). Pres Trump demand and enforce regs against any country or person hunting and killing/pocahing the great and animals of the world.
I would have been about 3 or 4 years old when this series was on
Captain Beach commanded the USS Triton on her around the world submerged voyage in 1960.
...and wrote a book about it. A book I wish I hadn't loaned . . . out years ago.
@@pjzdreamz ...was it an autographed copy(?)
If not, it shouldn't be too hard to find another copy: the internet is a wonderful thing(!)
Noticed peabuddy did not correct the Captain when he repeatedly called him Peabody.
now I know why the professor got marooned on an uncharted island with two great looking gals, he was on a submarine with all guys...
Ain't that one officer the Professor from Gilligan's Island????
David Eastwood Yes Indeed,.He just passed not long ago
