The Road to Bethlehem Astor Piazzola (1921-1992)

This piece, created in 1989, was originally entitled La Chanson de la Naissance. Piazzolla is best known for the development of Tango Nuevo through his many works that crossed the boundaries between Tango, Jazz, and Classical music. A virtuoso bandoneonist (a type of concertina popular in Argentina, Uruguay, and Lithuania), Piazzolla regularly performed his own compositions with a variety of ensembles. Nadia Boulanger, with whom he studied in Paris in the 1950s, encouraged him to pursue his career in Tango “recognizing that was where his true musical talent lay.”
