lucia nguyen remove the one from 15. There are two ways to number the periodic table columns- start from left with 1 and skip the middle transitional metals and continue with 3,4,5,6,7,8 ( all way to noble gases, so P gets 5)

How do you know there are 5 valence in Phosphorus ? I see a 15 on top. I am looking at the periodic table. I am confused. Please help !
