E-Doo - Electric Seadoo Boat Wakesurfs but Won't Plane! Conversion Project First Water Test Results

  • This is the first test video of the E-Doo Electric Seadoo Boat Conversion Project where I convert a 2002 Seadoo Utopia 185 with a broken motor into an electric battery powered boat. In this video we take the boat out testing with 6.5 people onboard and a big dog (so probably the weight of 7 people total). I manage to wakesurf on this trip. The wake is not the best for surfing and it needs about another mile per hour or so to get surf without the rope but it did tow me! Bad news though, the boat refuses to plane. Looking at the motor specs it would seem this will be helped by adding the extra battery bank I have been talking about and bending the impeller - tune into the end of the video to see more explanation and the footage of what happened! Also we towed it using our new Tesla Model Y (electric vehicle towing EV boat about 50 miles) and that worked out great! Even pulled it just fine as the tire fell off and I had to drag the wheel-less trailer to get off the road with the Tesla (see video for details).
    Some Specifications:
    Boat - 2002 Seadoo Utopia185 Jet Boat 8 Seater with Wakeboard / Wakesurf Tower
    Trailer - 20 Foot Long Single Axle with Adjustable Bunks (not original Sea-Doo), welding on fold away tongue
    Electric Motor - Netgain HyPer 9 Integrated System™ (IS) High Voltage (HV)
    Batteries - Eight LG Chem 8s 28.8v 4.75kWh Lithium Ion Battery Modules from Chevy - Total 38kWh (just got 2 more [but not added yet] for a total of 47kWh)
    Battery Management System - Dilithium Design With Extra Satellite (48s total)
    Charger - TSM2500 and EVCC Charge Controller 144V with J1772 plug so we can use L2 electric charging stations
    DC-DC Converter - TSM 144V (50a max @ 12v)
    Cooling pump - Generic $50 pump from Thunderstruck Motors

    Looking good Eddie on the surfboard. Nice job designing, building and testing it. Once you dial it in, it will be fantastic. Well done.
    I lost a wheel on my boat trailer once. Lucky though it was tandem axle.

    Holy shit the SAME thing happened to my dad right after he bought two brand new Sea Doos in 1998(?) while we were headed to our lake house. It was about a 1.75 hours drive and an hour in the right wheel just decided it didn't want to be part of the trailer anymore. Thankfully my dad had gotten a truck mostly for towing the dual jet ski trailer and it didn't do much to the truck but I could only imagine if we had been towing the jet skis with something smaller

    Sweet vid! The torque dropoff at higher RPMs is something I'm wondering about too. My sea-doo is just a PWC rather than a boat, but it will be interesting to see if the torque is enough I'm using an AC-35 at 98v might go up to 144v if I have to though. Trying to get mine done in the next week or two to test out!

      Unfortunately it is pretty rare for anyone to put boat engines on a dynamometer though so it's very hard to know exactly what the stock impellers is "geared" for. So it is definitely a guessing game. Excited to see how yours goes.

    5:11 you guys could have easily shortened the battery belts though, just saying lol. I had same issue lifting my cnc mill and I just made a couple of knots on a belt and it worked :)

    Did you do a run with just 1 person in the boat? Those fibreglass hulls weigh a fair bit?

      Sorry I wish I was faster at making these videos. I have all the footage but the weak link is my editing speed and during summer I get distracted on the weekends.

    Great project, very good video THX.
    Maybe you can try to throw the Jetdrive out and use a propeller. I think that is more efficient and with the power you have it could be possible to plane.
    I own a Challanger and you’re Video helps a lot , because i have the same plan.

      Yeah I went back and forth between prop and jet drive. The main deciding factors were that I wanted to wakesurf and the jet drive popped up for less money than a true v drive and was lighter. But a prop is probably more efficient (though I have never seen a true comparisons using the same hull).

      Most of the electric boats have a direct shaft drive and no Z Drive or Jet because they cost Power. Mercury sold their 60HP outboard as 40 HP Jetdrive outboard. Can you tell me the weight of you’re batteries??

      The batteries are about 50 pounds per 4.75 KWH pack. Which equates to 400 pounds for the 8 pack (38 KWH) system I have now or 500 pounds for the 10 pack system I plan to have total (47 KWH total) that is planned. There is also some extra weight for the cooling and metal that I encased them in so I assume somewhere near 600 pounds in the end for the whole system. I pulled a 40 gallon gas tank wich is 320 pounds and the original motor and new electric motor probably equals maybe a 50 pounds loss. So in total I estimate I added 270 pounds.

    I really like your project. I have taken on a very similar project myself. I have bought a 16 ft.1998 Sugar Sand Jet Boat, which I believe is about 700 lbs. lighter that yours. I have removed the 175 HP Sport jet motor. And I am now deciding what size motor, volts, etc.. to purchase for it. If you have any advice for me I would really appreciate it. Also would you have a picture you could share, of how you mounted and coupled your motor to the Jet Pump? I have some idea how you did it from your videos, but I picture might be more helpful. Can't wait to see your next video on this project!

      I really need to finish the videos as I have a ton more footage of the build but have just been a tad busy this summer. Definitely have some pictures I will try to share soon. As far as advice goes, don't under-spec the motor too much as you can see from my plane-ing issues here! And also be aware that the batteries will probably add the same weight as a few passengers - it would be wise to have it near the center of the boat and not so far to the back as I did. Ideally if I could do this over I would have pulled out the 40 gallon gas tank that is in the center of the boat, cut the top off and put the batteries in there, re-sealed it, and put it back where it was. However the reason I didn't do that was I would have needed to cut some major fiberglass to get the tank out due to the Utopia's design. Everything else I have been happy with so far.

      @@ThatOneGuy7575 Thanks for the information, I will definitely plan to pull out the gas tank and utilize that space for the batteries. I am thinking I will probably go with the same motor you have. Can you let me know how much your battery pack weighs? I'm thinking I might go with a similar voltage, as you, but try to have a smaller/lighter pack. I know I will be sacrificing some KWH & range. But I plan on using the boat more as a bass fishing boat, where I only need to go fast for short periods between fishing spots.

    I'm also working (slowly) on a 18' bowrider conversion, sterndrive. Probably not ready for splash until spring 2022.
    Just for comparison I went with 272AH Lifepo4, 60 in a 2p30s configuration, 96 volt nominal, total 52 kwh. $5600 delivered to US. Total weight 660#.
    Also planning on LV Hyper9.
    We need to see more tech stuff!

      Sounds like a great project! I know the feeling the builds can take a lot of time to figure out. I hope to get more videos out soon but I am very slow about making them especially in the summer.
