  • Today I wanted to share a quick off the cuff video that I made during a recent practice session, about double tonguing and how I like to work on it, using an exercise that I based off of some trumpet exercises we've all heard down the hall from a college practice room...
    good luck, and enjoy!

I post weekly videos here on RUclips that feature my original projects! Sometimes it’s a band video, a solo trombone piece, educational tips about jazz and playing trombone, they come out each Wednesday! If you don’t know me, I’m a jazz trombone player, educator, and producer based in New York City. I’ve had some great teachers like Wycliffe Gordon and Steve Turre, and studied at both the Eastman School of Music and the Juilliard School. I’m always up to something new so make sure to stay connected if you want to see what’s happening in the jazz world here in NYC!

I don't really Doodle tongue, I am more of a Double Tongue person. You have to strive to match all of the syllables (da and gah) so that it flows simple and clean!

Great stuff. Is this the articulation you use while improvising? Any tip about the du-dle tonguing?

How would you go about triple tonguning? I've been struggling to get it fast and I have a little hitch between "tu" and "ku"

Hey Nelson! good question... I suppose one for a whole 'nother video! For me, when I try and say "di-ga-duh" so that there are three distinct syllables, and three distinct places in my mouth where the tongue helps create that consonant sound that helps with the articulation... hope that gets you going!
