"Misjudged your limits. Pushed you too far. Took you for granted. I thought that you needed me more." Oh, how wrong you were! And now she's gone, and he's left "hiding the tears in my eyes." I like the music to this one a lot. I like that rhythmic lag with the downward turn of the melody. And I love the vocal delivery at that point, too, how the words are stretched out and rhythmically out of kilter all the more. And it sounds so upbeat compared to the lyrics!
I will never ever grow tired of this song. It’s a real classic. I also love the ‘86 new vocal version *the video is amazing too by the way. From now on it just gets better and better!
I believe it was a stand alone single in 1979. It was later remixed and given new vocals in 1986 to promote their singles collection, "Standing On A Beach. So it seems to be saying that he has lost her because as a boy he's not supposed to show emotion, so has not really expressed his true feelings for her but has remained nonchalant and emotionally distant, and has now realised his mistake. Robert said this about it in the NME: And as an English boy at the time, you’re encouraged not to show your emotion to any degree. And I couldn’t help but show my emotions when I was younger. I never found it awkward showing my emotions. I couldn’t really continue without showing my emotions; you’d have to be a pretty boring singer to do that. So I kind of made a big thing about it. I thought, ‘Well, it’s part of my nature to rail against being told not to do something’
To my knowledge, this is their most famous song from the ones you listened until now. I am no Cure expert, but I would say this is actually one of their most famous tunes to this day. I am surprised you had never heard it! 😲 Yes, the lyrics are quite clear on this one, and I think you got the right perspective of "boys don't cry": it's not so much a question of social /cultural perception (from the outside), but more about an internal individual struggle - though the cultural obviously precedes and influences the individual attitude, I would say. In fact, it reminds me of the theme in "Crying in the Rain", though here there is actual crying (disguised in the rain) and not laughter to disguise the pain.
Hey, baby. 😘 Well said about the lyrics focusing on the internal struggle but with the backdrop of cultural attitudes. And I love the comparison with "Crying in the Rain," two different approaches to masking pain. Also you're right, it does seem like this is a fan-favorite, evidenced by both the other comments here and the level of engagement with the video (biggest in this deep-dive so far, I believe). I love your comments as always, and I love you, Sofia. 🥰❤
Hello, Sofia! How have you been? I'm a fan but no expert on the Cure, but I did know this one as well. This has a unique turn to the melody that makes it stand out!
@@WYVEREX5 Hey, Kim! Long time, no see. 😁 I hope you’re doing well. I am quite fine, thank you, other than being a little sleep deprived and tired. 🤪 I love the Cure, even if I am no expert. This one is classic Cure, of course. 👍 But there are many others I prefer, and I can't wait for Matt to get to them. 😊 Thanks for reaching out! We'll meet again soon, I am sure. 😜
@@SofiaMarques18 I'm just sort of floating in and out... And most of what I know and love by The Cure pretty much falls in the period of time when they were at peak popularity. So, I'm looking forward to more of these early tracks and then the later ones. Catch you later! 😛
Hi Matt..a bit off topic with a video recommendation for you, from the 80s, hilarious with a great beat, it was huge in the clubs at the time and the band is called Boys Don’t Cry..for a split second when I saw this thumbnail I thought about that and I thought no way is he reacting to that, then realized it was the song not the band lol…but you might enjoy it for yourself on your own time..the song is ‘I Want To Be A Cowboy’ 🤠 ✌✨
Why wasn't "Boys Don't Cry" chosen for the album when it was recorded during the Three Imaginary Boys sessions and second-rate stuff like "Foxy Lady" and "So What" ended up on the album? Only Chris Parry must have the answer. Perhaps he thought that "Boys Don't Cry" had all the makings of a potential hit single, and that it would be better to release it in this format rather than leave it anonymous among the other tracks on the album.... who knows! "Plastic Passion", the B-side of "Boys Don't Cry", is also interesting and would have deserved its place among the tracks on Three Imaginary Boys (it will also be on the American compilation Boys Don't Cry).
Yes, definitely. It just takes longer to get around to everything these days as I have more going on in my life, and of course there are many deep-dives to frequent. But yes, we will continue with George and Wham. Cheers!

Very excited with this journey, the best is yet to come! 😉

Matt, this is the wrong place, but I was unsure where to ask my question. Are you going to continue down the George Michael/Wham! road?
Yes, definitely. It just takes longer to get around to everything these days as I have more going on in my life, and of course there are many deep-dives to frequent. But yes, we will continue with George and Wham. Cheers!
@mattsnider2667 Yay!!!! Are there any albums, etc that you don't have? I'm hoping you have Older. It is a true masterpiece.
