Start every day with a vintage-style coffee maker made for modern convenience! The SMEG DCF02 Retro Style Coffee Maker is just the companion to make sure you get your daily dose of delicious brew. It looks like it's come straight out of decades past, but comes fully loaded with all the features needed to begin each morning - and makes one mean cup of joe while doing so!
When you first take a look at this retro-style coffee maker, the one thing that stands out is its generously wide frame. Sure, it may not be the most space efficient setup - but the domed lid on top offers something special: an iconic style with no compromise in quality! As for usability - while there's unfortunately nowhere to store mugs or filters on top of your machine - there’s still plenty of room underneath thanks to their cone-shaped drip basket and water tank design.
This coffee maker comes with a 10-cup capacity glass carafe, and the fully removable lid (as opposed to a flip-up lid) clicks into place securely. If you don’t want to make a full 10 cups, you can simply fill the coffee pot with as much water as you wish and it will run whatever’s in the holding tank through the machine. Oddly there’s also a half-pot button on the machine, which will only brew four cups when pressed. I’m not sure I understand the need for this option since if you only want half a pot you only need to fill the water tank with as much water.
The carafe comes with a pause and serve feature which lets you remove the pot to fill your mug even while the brewing is happening and this will prevent your brew from getting on the burner.

I purchased my SMEG coffee maker (PINK!) after watching this review and I LOVE IT. There are issues. It doesn't stay hot for very long, but it works for me and the microwave is right there, so... Also, pouring in the top can be an issue, but not really. I just fill the carafe with more water than I need and it pours in just fine. Here's the thing, though. It gives me a little shot of joy every time I make my coffee, which makes it worth the money to me.

I use the half pot brew feature because I drink less than 4 cups every day. So one tank fill will get me 2 days worth of brews.

have a Smeg drip coffee maker and I love it, oh I don't use Glass Carafe for pouring the water into the machine , I use water bottle to pour to machine which has already purified water, (1 a 3/4 or almost two bottles of water equal to 6 cups, that's how I am measuring it , lol,

On future versions of this machine, they need to add a small mesh filter to the water hole in the water compartment. As when cleaning, a few years ago some some piece of plastic cloth found its way into the water level indicator and it been impossible to dislodge. Thank you.

The quality of the machine actually has a significant role in making a good cup of coffee: the machine has to regulate a specific temperature to ensure even extraction that does not produce a bitter or weak brew, and this brewing water also has to spend a specific amount of time on the ground beans. America's Test Kitchen has an excellent video on coffee machines!

This is true. Video says the quality of water and beans has more play into making a good cup of coffee. Obviously those are contributing factors. However like you say, temperature and the time the water is on beans is very important. I have heard that the temperature does not get hot enough on this maker. There was no mention of this on the video. Because of that alone, its a hard pass. Especially at this price point. Years ago Braun made a cheap maker called the aromaster. They still make it in Europe. That used to make a crazy good cup for the price point. And every single maker I've had since then pales in comparison. To the point that I just use K cups now. But I"m tired of using those and the environmental waste is bad. I like the look of this SMEG but its not the machine for those that care about making the best tasting cup of coffee. So far I've found two that seem to fit the bill. The Moccamaster (made in the Netherlands) and the Breville. Both SCAA certified and will run over 300 USD. Basically, if the taste of coffee is important you MUST buy something that is SCAA certified.

What added value does the 4 cup function have when I press it? I mean, if I want to make 2, 3, 4 or 5 cups, I pour water for the corresponding number of cups and the coffee spoons accordingly for the number of cups. So what makes this button so special?

for anyone interested in this machine the "red flags" this woman talks about are user error issues. i was laughing watching her full the machine with water as she deliberately sloshed the jug around to 'accidently' spill water down side. if you're not stupid then you will in fact be able to complete the simple task of pouring water in a machine. if you're not lazy then you'll also be fine taking 30 seconds out of your day to simply rinse and wipe the coffee pot.

Coffee is never fresh if you keep it in the machine overnight, it loses all its fragrance due to the lack of a tight seal, I usually buy only coffee beans and I use the Breville smart grinder only when I'm about to make my coffee, be it cappuccino, drip, or espresso!

That's still a bad choice if you want the best tasting coffee. Unless its the Cuisinart - CPO-850P1. That's the only model that gets to correct temperature of 195-205 degrees temp and is SCAA certified. Maker makes a huge difference. I've got a Cuisinart and paid 100 dollars. Big waste of money. Now I have to pay 200-300 and get a SCAA certified maker. Yeah it does make a big difference.

You made a genuine point about filling this damned machine with water, also you have to turn the machine to be able to see the filler at the same time.
When it comes to the timer; no one needs a full pot of coffee to go cold in an hour. What a waste of money. I am actually very sorry I purchased this machine. I won't be buying another SMEG.

I would put function below 7 as it fails to get between 195 and 205 degrees Fahrenheit. This is the correct temp for approved SCAA coffee makers. Temperature and time spend on beans is a HUGE factor for making the best cup. This SMEG is all about form and nothing else. A complete total waste of money unless you just want it as a prop in the background for a cooking show. Channel says good water and beans are the main sources for good coffee. When I was younger I used to believe in this myth. Partially true but the maker has more play in making a good cup and can make a world of difference.

It looks like it just makes IMHO "stewed" drip filter coffee (like you find in a US diner).
No espresso / cappuccino / macchiato / latte for you!
Is a "cup" a micro Italian espresso cup or a regular mug type size (for us a normal cup = about 2 Italian cups)?
