  • When looking to upgrade to the MSD81 Mosfet for the N54 DME, you first need to remove the MSD80 Mosfet's. My cylinder 4 mosfet was damaged so I decided to upgrade them all.
    There are plenty of videos online to show you how to install but lack the knowledge of how to remove. In this video, I hope to show you just that. Links to the products used below:

    A perfect turtorial, excatly what I was looking for! Thank you for uploading. Our garage had a request for repairing it and we agreed without any pre knowledge in soldering ecu. But we are sure, that we can handling this aswell with time. Thank your for the video, thats the last step we were looking for.

    can you do this using a soldering iron instead of a soldering heat gun? Since the 2 of the legs area already snipped off then wouldnt a soldering iron just melt the other bar and underneath? Reason Im saying this is that I am concerned about the hot air blowing over to the other components.

    • @BMWBoyeeM3
      @BMWBoyeeM3  3 года назад

      If you have a steady hand I'm sure you could. Be careful of the heat though.

    Clipping the legs I wouldn't have thought of. Nice. I would have done it as a single lift (which would have been harder I think) - I haven't done it yet.
    So in terms of installing the new mosfets, did you by any chance records any video installing the new ones. I'm specifically interested for recommendations of what flux/solder to apply. Did you use solder or solder paste for example, and if so what was your experience.
    Super helpful video though - my thanks.

      Super - thanks Nathan for taking the time out of your day to respond.
      I got some paste and hot air gun this morning. I was going to try it with solder and an iron, but paste would seem to be the easier of the two along with a gun from what I've watched on RUclips. I'm an computer programmer, and while technology doesn't daunt me, I do know that there's a "knack" to soldering from doing this a few times over the years. Just waiting on the mosfets to arrive.
      In Europe we seem to have slightly different part numbers for the mosfets, so I've gone with the recommended part number on Bimmerpost (SIHB30N60E)
      ie.rs-online.com/web/p/mosfets/7689310/
      Just FYI to anyone reading - they do seem to have a higher voltage tolerance than the US ones. Not sure it matters too much as it probably shouldn't be testing that limit - but I'll mention it anyway.
      With a bit of luck I won't hose my ECU ...... although I guess I can't be more broken than broken :-) Car is dead dead currently.

      I replaced all 6x mosfets on my board (2x were faulty - can't remember which ones, but it was 1 from each bank). I used a hot air gun with temperature set to 360C for the gun. Like your video, they came off pretty sweetly and with a bit of messing about with a tweezers got the new ones on there! I soldered the base first, to ensure it was good, and then did the two legs a min or two later. Result!
      Car wouldn't even turn over previously. Now the car starts, and not reporting 30ba or 30bb codes anymore, but there's a misfire on cylinder 4. A little disappointed that it's not completely sorted, but overall happy that progress being made. In fact whatever problem is still there on Cyclider 4 may have been the original problem which blew the 2x mosfets.
      I'll resolder the #4 mosfet with a fresh one incase I didn't seat it correctly and see what happens. The whole process is a little bit cumbersome as I'm doing the soldering but the car is in the shop, so there's a bit of to'ing/fro'ing to get the ECU......do the soldering, and then drop it back and wait for a slot for my mechanic to do his bit. I'd have done it myself, but it broke down on the side of the road and needed to be towed to the shop. First world problems, eh?
      As for cylinder 4 - I've replaced the coils & plugs, but I guess it could also still be the injector? If anyone has any suggestions, I'm always open to idea.
      Thanks again Nathan. It's nice to see the positive power of forums sharing the knowledge etc in this day and age of trolling and negativity.

      @BMWBoyeeM3  3 года назад

      @@alandoy1 Alan, this probably isnt what you want to hear but if you have injectors indexed less than 11, that is probably what is causing your misfire and also blew your mosfets. Seems to be a common problem. Also, if you replace the injector with a new one, if the old ones on that bank aren't up to index 11, you need to replace the whole bank.
      Hope you get it sorted out!

    400 degrees Fahrenheit or Celsius?
    I’ve bought the same hot air station. . That said, thanks for uploading the video! Going to try to fix this myself. Had an electronics repair shop do these preventatively . But ended up with error code 2e35 injector 6 input signal. Car runs only in limp mode. Have continuity from harness to injector. Swapped injector didn’t change. I’m hoping it’s a bad mosfet even though it’s new. Or a bad connction on the board that’s fixable.
