After 40+ years of carpentry I really don't enjoy power tools and prefer to leave my routers in their cases. It takes longer to cut binding channels, rosette channels, rosette pieces, by hand, but as you say, the process is enjoyable, and I'm not trying to pound out guitars at any particular speed. IF you intend to use an LMI gramil also buy the index collar which allows you to lock in a setting for both the rounded and flat index surfaces of the gramil. Actually, I got two gramils and have one set up for width of channel and one set up for depth...saves time and adds accuracy. I also cut neck tenons and body mortises with hand tools, again for the enjoyment, as well as thicknessing sides and plates, and mill blocks, bindings, and linings with hand tools. The upside to this is that I can work in a room inside, need to invest in no heavy shop tools, need no dust collection system, and have a surplus of shavings to line the chicken coop;)

@@johngriswold2213 Me too but too much automation disconnects me from the instrument in my opinion . I can't see it properly in my mind . If that makes any sense . Peace ✌

thank you Eric . you can use the gramil to score the top and sides to reduce the chance of tear out. Question please the x - brace for the top if i understand correctly . if the x-brace is moved an eight off the center line to the bass side you will get a better bass sound . reverse it for the treble side for a brighter guitar .

Eric, thanks for the tip on the 25mm thumb plane. I'm just getting around to getting one and didn't really know what size to get. Excellent video! (sorry for all the posts)

Speaking about doming tops. Ervin Somogy suggests that doming tops is not necessary when building. (I'm pretty sure he's talking about your first few guitars.) That $150 bucks for a dish and sandpaper could be spent on other stuff. I can get a page number from his book(s) if someone needs that.

If you build dead flat better make sure you do it at very low humidity. Having your top go concave from dryness would reallllly suck. It wouldn’t go back to flat either. You could use the same radius for the top and the back. I would highly suggest a top radius. But then again a couple top end builders go dead flat.

Yes, Naphtha is petroleum based. It's more refined than mineral spirits I think. It evaporates faster than mineral spirits. We can't get it in California anymore. I stocked up the last time I left the state.

I admire your tenacity but give me a gramil and trim router any day. There are so many other opportunities to use my chisels when creating a guitar.

Why does searching the web for "gamil" find nothing, other than this video? Did you make up that word? And why do you pronounce it like "graw-mill"?
