  • A quick video of a simple mod to the standard exhaust on a Dragstar (AKA Vstar) classic xvs650A. It can be done on the standard model as well!
    No rejetting required and the sound is vastly improved and louder.
    Check out this diagram:
    www.gothtec.com...
    As you can see the first two plates are the end cone section, these are fine to drill through. If you go through the second or third baffle plate you must then re-jet your carbs.
    If you undertake this job I advise that you use a skilled mechanic and can not be held responsible for any negative consequences.
    All elements of the video was created by myself for this channel, I own all rights to content!

    Start with pilot bit, a much smaller drill bit. Makes this tons faster and easier. You can use 3 bits total, small, medium, and your final one. Spray them with WD40 and work your way through the bits. Easy peasy. Like your vids, thanks!

    Again, its not so much of an issue with a 4-stoke engines, as back pressure its so important, but if you release too much back pressure you may have to rejet.I would say "yes you can, but check before hand!"
    A good idea is to drill out the holes and see, if you then get a "flat spot" (when riding" then use bolts to fill the wholes until your happy! When I did this mod if knew that I could refill the holes with bolts and a tap and die set and so have no issues with doing it!!

    Cheers for the video mate! 🤙🏻😎
    From down under, where the law has nothing better to do than harass riders for loud exhausts!
    I just got defected by cops for dealer fitted when new, Vance & Hines Short Shots pipes, on a 2018 model bike that just had a RWC inspection!
    I had to replace them with stock pipes and have it noise tested at my cost.
    So at least this gives just a little more notice to drivers than the whisper quiet stock OEM pipes on the XVS650, and hopefully not loud enough to attract the attention of officer loud pipes the noise nazi…😮
    Thanks for the video, your very easy to follow steps, led to my very satisfied success!

    This is the mod for a standard exhaust for the Dragstar/Vstar 650 only!
    Any modifications to non-standard exhausts, or exhausts on other bikes, must be done to the individual specifications of the Airfilter - carb - exhaust set up!

    If you have a Air induction system then that can cause backfire... A rejet it a complicated carb set up, that increases/decreases the fuel flow. Best bet is take it to your mechanic for assistance.

    Nice informative video. I have to say, I have owned three Harley Davidson Sportsters in my life and they were very LOUD! I found that on long trips the loud exhaust note became tiring after a couple hours of riding. I am a man in my 70's so I bought smaller a V-Star 650. The stock exhaust sounded loud enough for me. I would be a bit reluctant to bore holes in the exhaust as it may affect the back pressure on the exhaust stroke possibly making the engine run lean which in the long run may shorten the service life of the engine. I would say if boring the holes makes the bike louder without damage or changing the jets then by all means go for it.

    Look up the specs of the exhaust, you should find out if you need to rejet - I found a diagram of rejetting for the XVS650 exhaust that had 3 plates and so gave the stages of rejet... I have done similar on a honda 250 with no ill effect! As its a 4 stroke it doesn't really matter so much about backpressure, its losing back pressure that means a rejet.

    This is a common problem with the 650 Dragstars, it seems the clutch is its weakest point, my old Dragstar suffered from serious clutch slip from new... Firstly a change of oil may help with that, as its biting too quickly, going for a synthetic oil may help that.... BUT!! I suspect that your clutch plates have given up and you need news ones, easy to get and I have a video on here on how to do it :)

  • @Gothtecdotcom
    @Gothtecdotcom  11 лет назад

    Addendum: This mod may effect your fuel consumption, but in your case by a very small amount. Another idea is whip the exhaust silencers off completely and go for a run, if there is little difference in performance then I'd do this same mod! but don't run without silencers, as this could have hidden effect on the engine and not very good for the police and neighbours :D

  • @Gothtecdotcom
    @Gothtecdotcom  11 лет назад

    Looking back at comments, I have just experience a serious running issue and found it to be the idle was set too high, dialling it back sorted the problem :D

  • @Gothtecdotcom

    If the bike has been looked after then it should be easy, saying that the current dragstar was in terrible state for its mileage and all the bolts come away fairly easily... If I remember rightly it was the exhaust bolt that snapped and they are made of cheese, so if you can get them out and replaced with marine bolts the sooner the better :D

    I would have drilled pilot holes first, say about 2mm first then worked my way up to 5 mm then 8 mm holes, and use sharp drill bits. I'm keen to give it a go on my wife's v star 650 but I think I'll ask first before I do anything.

    • @Gothtecdotcom
      @Gothtecdotcom  10 лет назад

      It is exhaust metal, if you tried a 2mm pilot all you'll do is go through very quickly and then snap the drill bit. As for sharp drill bits, I look after mine and find that just taking care when drilling is actually the best way to get a good result, because even sharp drill bits dull very quickly when drilling metal.

    • @Gothtecdotcom
      @Gothtecdotcom  10 лет назад +1

      Theres an old biker adage I was told by a custom bike builder, in his 60s... - If you see cheap drill bits, then buy as many as you can, look after them but they will break, but you will always have a spare. If you buy expensive drill bits, you'll go through them just as quick but it'll cost you a lot more and most of the time you'll have to pop out and buy more halfway through a good days work!

  • @spanky522
    @spanky522 6 лет назад +2

    Sounds like crap which holes drilled in the baffles. You are better off to use a 2" hole saw and drill the baffles and pull them out completely. That way, it will be muffled, but a little louder and deeper.

    • @Gothtecdotcom
      @Gothtecdotcom  6 лет назад

      Well if your going to say the same thing on both videos then -
      Firstly - legality, with current legislation changing, not being able to "return to factory condition" renders your opinion mute.
      Secondly - That would screw up the engine efficiency and would result in the carbs needing to be rejetted... I do believe I said that in the previous video on this subject...
      Thirdly - Resale value reduced
      Fourthly - Mic on the camera is crap.... doesn't do the change justice...
      You should see what I did to the intruder...

  • @Gothtecdotcom

    Take the entire muffle off and run it, see what the change is, it sounds as if you may need to get a replacement muffler to get the sound you want... Also its not a V-twin and that may be the influence to the sound. What are the specs of the exhaust (baffle plates vs rejet)? On a guess I think you may have to rejet due to the limited back pressure from the exhaust...

  • @brain8149
    @brain8149 7 лет назад +1

    When I bought my XVS650A it also had a modified exhaust but in a different way. There are just 2 tiny holes (maybe 5-6mm?) at the bottom of each "cigar". About 1/4 of the length from each end. It sounds good and I have the feeling it is quieter than your modification. I even haven't noticed the mod for some time and was wondering why it was sounding so good, until I put my hand below the pipe and then could feel the gas flow :-) The drawback might be that sometimes I can smell the exhaust gas when I e.g. stop on the red signal. But I'm not sure if it's from that.

    Thanls for replying. I figured it out yesterday. I drilled a 1" hole in the in the baffler wall that is inside the baffler about 10". That gave it a nice aggressive sound. All of that work yesterday morning was for nothing. Simple solution is what I did. I suppose I could have cut out the entire baffler wall but it's fine how it is now. Performance is the same...Tested it today. I'm getting more back firing though...not too much but it's there...Any ideas on how to fix that?and what is 'rejet'?

    Looking for some tips....ANYBODY please. I have a LS650 with a Silver Tail pipe. I took the entire inside out today (baffle and fiberglass) that only made it sound like shit. So, I put it all back together and then did what this guy here did. I haven't noticed a change though..So on the front and back end of the baffle I drilled bigger holes where the smaller ones are..on the inside. Still no change...I think. I'm thinking maybe I need to cut the whole end off with a hole bit. What do you think?

      Saying that the annoying sound of a standard exhaust with the AIS still fitted just means when you start up its sounds awful...So when you go on to sell it you start up the bike and just look at the face of the guy buying it and know he's going to hand over the cash!

      no need to rejet with just an exhaust change, i left the stock #90 jets in, been running perfect for the last 30,000 miles. i opened the pilot mix screws a half turn but that was more to stop deceleration popping not for performance, the road burners have baffles in them their not free flowing straight pipes on top of that i wrapped the baffles like V&H pipes so the back pressure isn't much less than stock, vstar 650 carbs are very forgiving when comes to adjusting, you don't need to get them perfect, if the oem pipes didn't have that crossover pipe you could get them to sound really good
